This is a book about Blake Turner (a human possessed by a demon) and vampire Elise (a lonely creature who is sired by Mencheres). You will see only a glimpse of Cat and Bones and you will not like it because the demon will abuse verbally Cat and Bones will almost kill poor innocent Blake to make the demon shut up.
The events take place after At Crave’s End. So Mencheres is still mourning the death of his mate and he really wants to help Blake and Elise.
Blake and Elise’s story is sweet and full of hope. It is a nice example of why nobody should ever surrender until the very end.

When he meets Elise, a vampire, hope surges in him. But Elise doesn’t kill him, she saves him.
This story sets after the events of At Grave’s End. Cat and Bones make a short appearance, Mencheres has a more significant role.
Surprisingly lot happens on only a couple of pages. Well-structured, enjoyable short story.
“Blake lusted after death as though it were a beautiful woman. Death meant he’d never hurt anyone again. Death meant his family would be safe. Death meant his remaining friends never had to open their doors and see a demon standing on the other side of it, concealed in Blake’s skin. Death was Blake’s only way of beating the thing inside him, and Blake wanted to beat it more than he wanted anything else.”

There are very few book series that make me want to seek out every single piece written just so I can keep living in the characters' world with them. Jeaniene Frost's Night Huntress Series is one of them. As many know, the series has ended but there are plenty of short stories/novellas available for fans. Devil to Pay is #3.5 of the series, and it's an entertaining short story featuring characters fans know and some that fans will meet for the first time. The characters are likeable and complement this story as well as the series well. If you are a fan of this series, don't pass this one up!

Actual rating: 2.5 stars.
Entertaining, but the romance fells short. I feel like there is a transition missing between when they meet and when they start to care for each other.
I wouldn't consider this novella as part of the Night Huntress series. To me it belongs in the Night Huntress World series, that would make way more sense.

5 Devil to Pay Stars
Ahh we get a glimpse of Cat and Bones!! Yah, Ok ok so Blake is possessed by a demon, and he likes to show up and take over Blake’s body and do terrible things. Blake can feel when he is coming and he wants to stop it.
The only way he knows how is to kill himself, and he was ready to do it when Elise a vampire stumble upon him before he can.
Elise wants to help so gets in contact with our favorites Cat and Bones who contact Mencheres who is also Elise sire, who help her when she was read to leave this world as well and he brought her back.
This short is really a great gift of hope and surviving. I def recommend reading it.

A fast-paced and nice short story of Blake, possessed by a demon and saved by vampire Elise.
A short appearance by Cat and Bones but it’s Mancheres that plays a bigger part in this enjoyable addition to this series.

A short story about a demon-possessed man and a lonely vampire who tries to help him.
The demon part is new to this series and has me thinking that maybe it was an introduction to a new kind of villain for future books in the main story thread. Cat and Bones do make an appearance in this short story - albeit a short one.
Though I enjoyed the story, it was really too short and the characters had left more things to tell about themselves. I feel as though their story is unfinished and I would really like to see them again in the future books.

Of the Night Huntress short stories I have read so far, this is my favorite. It was a complete short story of its own with characters we knew, as well as some new ones. I knew there would be some sort of HEA, and it did not happen the way I was expecting. Knowing what we do of Frost's supernatural world at this point in the series, I had figured on a different ending. Overall, an enjoyable story.

Elise is a vampire who is tired of everything. She has shut herself away in a room underneath the subway and hasn't had much contact with vampires or humans in years. But when she stumbles across a man ready to jump in front of a subway train, Elise doesn't hesitate to save him. Blake wants to end it all. He has been possessed by a demon and has no control over the destruction the demon has caused. Elise decides she will help Blake get rid of this demon with the help of her sire, Mencheres.
This is a short story set in the Night Huntress world. We get a short visit from Cat & Bones. Mencheres is involved with helping Elise save Blake. I enjoyed this novella and think anyone who reads the Night Huntress series would like it also. My rating: 4 Stars.

Well I have yet to find a book in this world that I don't love. This novella was another great addition to the series and I absolutely loved Blake and Elise.

This is by far my favourite novella by Jeaniene Frost to date.
Considering how short this is, I found Blake and Elise were both well rounded enough for me to really enjoy their growing relationship. Interactions were at times a little cheesy, but when you're accelerating a romance in the space of 100 pages I guess sometimes a little cheese is good to make things stick. However, of course, my favourite character was Night Huntress staple Mencheres. I hear there is a Night Huntress World book focusing on him and DAMN but I am going to read the heck out of that the first opportunity I get.
The story is simple and yet effective. Possession is something I haven't read extensively in any of Frost's previous novels (as of yet, anyway) but she does it well. This, like all of her work, is deliciously dark and doesn't shy aware from guts and gore. Neither does it shy away from more heated scenes with our heroes - Frost does this is aplomb and it definitely works.
A great novella for quick reading between Night Huntress books, or for re-entering the Kat and Bones story after a prolonged absence (like me!).

There are short appearances by Cat & Bones along with Mencheres who supports Elise in trying to help Blake.
This is a fun addition to the series and I certainly don’t want to spoil it. If you are a Night Huntress fan, you should READ IT!

Part of
Bones & Cat made a very short appearance - but this novella is focused on Elise & the demon-possessed Blake - with Mancheres playing a bigger role than Cats & Bones.

Another great little story in this novella although I'm always a bit disappointed that these novellas only feature cameo appearances by Bones & Cat. Still the stories are entertaining for shorts.

Another fun installment in the Night Huntress world. I love Jeaniene Frost’s writing style and her sense of imagination! In this installment our main characters are Elise and Blake, but you still get the cameo appearances of Mencheres, Bones and Cat!
Blake use to be an average guy. He is a divorced man who was a broker leading a normal life, until a demon possessed him. After several times of the demon taking over his body and spilling innocent blood Blake is at the end of his rope…he has decided the only way to stop his blood spree is to kill himself. In the midst of one of his many tries to kill himself Elise stumbles upon him. Elise is a vampire who tries to keep to herself. She was made by Mencheres many years ago and tends to stay inside her home until she must go out to eat. During one of her dinning out adventures she smells blood and that smell leads her to Blake, in the nick of time…before he can attempt his suicide the demon takes over. Elise is strong and subdues the demon and takes Blake back to her home to figure out what is going on. Once she discovers that Blake is possessed by an evil demon she turns to the only person she can, Mecheres her maker, hoping that his strength and worldly experience can save Blake. Little do either of them know, their experience will bring them to care for each other deeply.
I really enjoyed Elise. She reminds me a lot of myself…she would rather stay in and listen to music and read books then go out and party. She has had a lot of hurt in her past, hurt she can’t get over, and she feels the only way to keep from hurting ever again is to keep her distance from anyone. Blake is a fun character. He is a strong man, not really physically but mentally. He is tired of hurting people when the demon takes over and he knows the only way to protect everyone is to die and he faces that fact head on. I think it would be a very scary thought to know that dying is in your near future but Blake never waivers.
I enjoyed the build up of their relationship and I really enjoyed Mecheres’ sneekiness in bringing them together. Unlike many of Jeaniene’s other books there isn’t a lot of sex scenes in this novella and I didn’t feel like I missed out without them. Of course, we all love some good smut, but for this book it was just the right amount. I enjoyed how they opened up to each other about the past and I loved how Blake cared so much for Elise that even towards the end he was trying to brighten her mood.
Overall: Just another fun novella in the night huntress world that reconfirms why I love Jeaniene’s writing and why she continues to stay at the top of my favorite authors list. Anyone who really enjoys the Night Huntress world should check this novella out because it’s a fast read, it gives you a glimpse of three of our favorite characters and it introduces us to two new characters that can be placed on our favorites lists. Anyone who hasn’t read the series can get a taste for Jeaniene’s writing and this would be a good push to get you to pick up Halfway to the Grave.

Blake's life is a living hell, possessed by a demon who has turned Blake into a killer, Blake knows that he must die so that the demon will never hurt anyone again, but with the demon calling the shots it's not going to be easy. When loner vampire Elise witnesses Blake's suicide attempt, the hopelessness of his situation stirs her long lost humanity and as Elise gets to know Blake and is touched by his selflessness, Elise discovers that even though she's immortal by isolating herself to protect her heart from further hurts, she's forgotten how to live.
Set in the Night Huntress world, with a short appearance by Cat and Bones and slightly longer one by Mencheres, Devil to Pay works much better on its own than it did sandwiched in between regency romances in it's original release in [[ASIN:B001NLKY7O Four Dukes and a Devil]]. Storywise, Devil to Pay manages to get the job done even in the shorter space, the leads are both likable and sympathy stirring, and there's nothing like impending death to spur a relationship along. I liked the ending but wouldn't have minded getting to bask in the after glow of the happily ever after just a bit - but then that's the nature of shorts. On the whole, Devil to Pay ends up being a nice little tidbit for Frost fans who missed it in its first incarnation, but Frost brings in just enough of her world so that the story will still work for fans-to-be.

Short but Satisfying!
I delayed reading Four Dukes and a Devil because the only short story I was interested in was Cat and Bones. I'm so glad this novella has been separated from the other stories in that anthology. Cat and Bones are not the focus of this novella, however brief the encounter, it was fantastic to get a touch of them, and it was also a fantastic treat to have Mencheres as well.
It is not necessary to be familiar with the Night Huntress series in order to follow along with this novella. I would consider this novella a stand-alone and I would love to read more about Elise and Blake in the near future. Their story was so compelling and intense, I wished this novella would never end.
The short story flowed smoothly and was well written. It felt complete and made me long to read the next Night Huntress book six, One Grave AT A Time due out 8/30/11 and also the new Night Prince series with Vlad and Leila, Once burned due out 3/27/2012.
I highly recommend this novella, Night Huntress Series and also the Night Huntress World books to fellow dark urban fantasy readers.

What a sweet story! Really enjoyed this one! Again, it's Night Huntress World, not a Cat and Bones novella. Cat and Bones appear briefly since the main heroine - Elis - is sired by Mencheres.
Elis has always been a loner. The minimum she does interact with humans is due to her maker who insists she try to mingle in the modern world.
All this changed when she met Blake, a human possessed by a demon making him a killer when the demon takes hold of his body.
Blake had enough all he wants to do is die - killing the demon as well.
Elis is awed by the sacrifice Blake is willing to make for others and as she spends more time with him she realizes she is falling in love with him.
But what use there is in that when even Mencheres can't save him? The only way to kill the demon is to release him into the salt planes AFTER Blake's death.
So all Blake and Elis have is borrowed time.
I loved both Elis and Blake, Mencheres is always a pleasure to read especially once you know him and understand why he acts the way he does. Recommended! Though I think that if you don't know Mencheres, Cat and Bones it will be a little less enjoyable.

I loved both Elis and Blake, Mencheres is always a pleasure to read especially once you know him and understand why he acts the way he does. Recommended! Though I think that if you don't know Mencheres, Cat and Bones it will be a little less enjoyable.

Love, loved, loved this novella. Jeanine Frost weaves a delicious love story with great character development in such a short format. Cat, Bones, and Menchares are all in the story and add a great touch to the story true to their characters. Elise is a Menchares' "child" and a social outcast making efforts not to isolate herself when she stumbles across Blake. He has been possessed by a terrible strong demon and has been tormented for months finding the carnage he has caused when waking from his black out's. Determined not to cause any more harm he us determined to kill himself and end the violence when Elise saves him. Blake stirs feelings in her she didn't' think existed anymore and vows to try to help him. Great story!

This was a very poignant story that will take you through a variety of emotions, though largely various shades of heartbreak, tinged at times with despair. While it doesn't seem to have any direct bearing on the main story of the Night Huntress series, we do see some of the characters from it. Cat and Bones play a significant, if relatively brief, role, and Mencheres features prominently. Even without these known characters, however, the new characters we meet here make it totally worth reading or listening to.

I enjoyed this story because of the relationship twist. This time its a leading female vampire and a male human. Cat and Bones make a good appearance and even though the heroine isn't a ball buster like cat i believe she is strong. solitude is rough, doing it for 50 years even rougher, getting out of your comfort zone of 50 years for a stranger to help them even tougher. JF is always good in my opinion, its more than worth a read.
