Francine Paula Pascal was an American author best known for her Sweet Valley series of young adult novels. Sweet Valley High, the backbone of the collection, was made into a television series, which led to several spin-offs, including The Unicorn Club and Sweet Valley University. Although most of these books were published in the 1980s and 1990s, they remained so popular that several titles were re-released decades later.
What a disappointment. Nothing exciting happened. SO WHY ARE THERE 20+ NOVELS IN THIS SERIES. I JUST WANT SAM AND GAIA TO GET TOGETHER. IS THAT SO HARD TO ASK FOR.
Basic plot: Gaia, Ed, and Mary engage in truth or dare that lasts for more than a day, Mary has to deal with paying off her drug dealer, and other stuff happens.
Rebel is yet another book in the Fearless series where nothing much happens aside from more padding and setting up for the next book. Nevertheless, I feel like I should go ahead and review it anyway.
1) "..And my uncle has apparently been watching over me my entire life."
I might have a bad memory but how exactly does Gaia know this? I don't recall Gaia suddenly figuring this detail out in any of the books so far.
2) The concept of a Truth or Dare game going wrong has already been done much better before. There's even a recent horror film released with this exact same premise. It might have been new when it was first published but nowadays it comes off as cliche (Like everything else in this series).
3) What kind of name for a drug dealer is Skizz anyway? It doesn't sound fitting at all. Why couldn't he be called Gasper, Dragon, Crank, or some actual drug slang? I tried actually searching for Skizz to see what it means. I got very little drug-related results compared to a much different and... interesting definition far from what the author probably had in mind.
4) I like how Ed freaks out at some point when he chooses truth, but he could just cleverly lie to get the question over with if it bothered him that much. I doubt Gaia or Mary would remember what he would respond with years afterward.
5) I don't think Gaia streaking for a dare next to some grown men is going to cause every single one of them to react happily but maybe I'm just thinking realistically.
6) Sam reveals he's not superstitious which is portrayed as speshul, yet Gaia and Heather (Maybe even Ed) also said that they weren't superstitious either. It might as well go on to say the same for everyone in this story.
7) Loki insists about security and privacy yet calls Ella from time to time. Keep in mind calls can easily be traced and recorded.
In fact, why can't Loki just hire a private messenger or something like an actual mastermind? He sends a letter around night, Ella gets the letter and reads it, She gives it back to the messenger, The messenger scurries off back to Loki, and the message is burned in front of him to ensure no one gets hold of it. Or better yet, use secret lingo that only they can understand. People going through the messages won't think anything of it. I bet he'll never do anything that astute but oh well.
8) This might have been intentional but the lyrics to Wannabe Mary sings is incorrect. She sings "Friendship lasts forever" but the actual line is "Make it last forever, Friendship never ends."
9) The drug dealer portrayal is laughably bad and not really how drug dealers act in real life.
10) All of these cool high tech devices Loki uses to gain intel on Gaia and Mary is actually neat. It's a shame he wastes them all on some 17 year old relative instead of doing something bigger.
To Book #8 aka Heat...

The Fearless series is a great young adult series with appeal (i think) for both boys and girls (of course never having been a teenage boy~i can't really say for sure). Although it deals with the feelings of a young woman "born without the fear gene" and all the subsequent doubts and insecurities of dealing with that and the normal growing pains of adolescence it also has a fair amount of adventure and intrigue. It makes great high interest reading for the "reluctant reader" because it is not difficult but it keeps up a rather frenetic pace, one novel leading into the next with cliffhanger after cliffhanger. Unfortunately the author originally couldn't keep up with my demand and i moved on to other books. I kept collecting but never picked up the storyline again (i have every intention to~you know what they say about good intentions...)
Just because I want to do something different I'm going to write the reviews in a Friends episode format. Enjoy!
The One With Gaia's Rebel Side
Everyone likes a dare. Especially Gaia. When Gaia, Ed, and new-best-friend Mary start a Truth or Dare Game, Gaia's picking of "Dare" leads her to explore the reckless side of her. Meanwhile, Mary's past is coming back to haunt her. Her old dealer wants his money back . . . or else.
This one felt more like a filler. I did enjoy it, but it was very flat. I did enjoy the part where Gaia confesses her past to Mary. That scene was very emotional and touching.
Not much happens in this book, mostly filler but it's a lot better than the last book. Mary's drug dealer and drug addiction is laughable in its depiction & any Loki POVs read like bad fanfiction. Sam remains annoying as hell for his inability to just break up with Heather. I don't know why Ella has the job she has because she's really bad at it. Gaia is still unlikeable. But hey, at least we got that one scene between her and Ed, the one couple I shipped hardcore as a little kid reading this series.
This was a little better than the last one but Gaia still annoyed me not believing Ed on something again. This time about Mary's former drug dealer stalking them.
Most of the book Mary and Gaia sometime Ed are playing Truth or Dare which some of the dares because that's all Gaia would do were crazy. Streaking in front a window for sure.
Ella still annoying as ever. Loki was there more. We find out what happened to Gaia's mom in this and who killed her. I skipped over the Sam and Heather parts cause I don't care about them. This does have Christmas in it.
3.5 stars for this. Spoiler alert I so ship Gaia and Ed together!!!!
This book reminded me of Kim Possible and I got so attached to Gaia. Mary was a great example of someone coming back from an addiction and trying improve her lifestyle while also feeling the negative effects of the addiction that she had. Very realistic.

I've read this series over ten years ago. But I remember it being very good. For the first 18 books. After that the more it lasted the worst it got. I stopped at book 32. These days I wouldn't give it more than 20.
Back to the good stuff. I found that Gaia was a good strong, pretty but still flawed character. She was special without being annoying. It's just that once the author stopped looking over the shoulder of the ghost writer. Things went down the drain pretty fast.
Last note. The series may be in boxes but I won't be giving them away any time soon. She's a good example of an interesting main character in an interesting premise.
I have to say...I really loved these books when I was a teenager. I love the concept, I think its exceptionally unique. With that said...every book starts to have the exact same format. It's what killed Nicholas Sparks for me. Don't be predictable! And I can't imagine reading all 30+ of these. I loved the first 3...after that, enough is enough.
Great concept, too many books.
Not to mention, language is an issue. Tone it down.
enjoyed reading these when I was younger. It was a good, short read with a great concept. However, it was very predictable.
Gaia was an awesome character, easily relatable even if she was more special than most. She still had her flaws, and in the book she was finding herself as a young woman.
Gaia and Mary's friendship causes annoyance to Ed and Ella and Loki (of course for different reasons. The truth behind Katia's death is revealed and vengeance has been sworn.
I think the parallels between Marys addiction and Gaia's desperation to not feel her tragic past were really interesting.
Very fun indeed! Altho' I wish at times she'd cool it on this series with the sex scenes. It should be. and is, a good action book series--but not that much "action" 'cos most kids will get the wrong idea. Point made I find the series addicting.
Really love this series- this book included! Well written, it appeals to almost any teenager and the action scenes are well mapped out and easy to visualise, something which I feel like is a big let down in other action books. Definitely worth a read!
This has been my favorite of the series so far. I'm glad something finally happened with Ed and Gaia and that we learned about Gaia's past through her friendship with Mary growing closer.
