Carrie struggles with scandal, doubt, and grace as the daughter of an undynamic minister grows up in 1950s Florida and comes of age under the broad umbrella of Methodism.
Great read. Starts as a child’s fuzzy yet perceptive view of her world. Ends with a clear and powerful voice. You can smell central Florida in this book.
I didn't think I was going to like this, and I didn't in some ways. Loose story of a girl growing up as a Methodist preacher's kid, her contact with differing religions and various people. I didn't find a cohesive vision throughout the sections. No real plot movement, left me wondering more about some of the folks, but I guess that's not inconceivable considering the transitory nature of a p.k.'s life. Maybe she just didn't have all the information. Interesting, though cursory, glimpses.
I read Coyle's novel "In Troubled Waters" and loved it. I sought out this particular book, anxious to read other works by the author. I realized after I started it that I had read it once before, but did not remember it. The stories are 1st person narratives, but drawn from the author's own life experiences as the daughter of a Methodist minister.
