Dommage.

I really enjoyed this novel! It was more of an adventure than a romance which was great. The author makes the setting come alive and you feel like you are right there on board the ship experiencing everything the characters do.

While this book was good, Cassandra irritated me beyond redemption and I really didn't like how it was written.

Stuart treated Cassandra like dirt and all the while she blamed herself when in fact, she had often done no wrong. She would rant in one paragraph about how she loved him and how cold he was to her and how they had lost everything, then in the next he would speak of his undying love for her.
It was completely annoying.
The first time they made love was followed by Cousin John making some rediculously pointless remark about Stuart being a gentleman and Cassandra surely not giving him more than a kiss. Considering I had just read at least a page and a half of them making love, I found it completely pointless and entirely unecessary.
The writer didn't use much variation in discribing things which made it boring and tedious to read. Cassandra and Stuart were made out to be gods among man and reading about how beautiful or handsome everyone found them infuriated me. It doesn't need to be said that many times.
And another thing, at times, parts felt too hurried and in others, time passed so slowly I found myself skim reading just to get passed it. I felt that the whole thing went on for far too long and was resolved too quickly.
Cassandra (we were told) was this amazingly spirited woman with an iron will and blah blah blah. I find myself asking if that were so, why the hell did she act like such a chastised child all the time? She was needy and desperate and didn't seem at all independant to me.
If this hadn't been set in a historical period that I love, I'd have given it one star.

this book was better than most historical romances; no bedroom scenes described inch by inch. that i appreciated.
