Lost Shifters #12

Ranger's Folly

Rate this book
Exiled from his childhood pack and hated by his family, Wolf shifter, Ranger vowed that he’d always protect others from sharing his same heartbreak. He fulfilled his promise, first by taking in stray shifters and then later on becoming a soldier for a feline coalition. So when he finds a strange Eagle shifter stalking one of his friends, it’s only natural that Ranger becomes protective. Especially when said Eagle is in the company of two Ravens—the most evil of all shifters.

Eagle shifter, Xavier lost everything dear to him when tragedy struck his family years ago. Taken in and raised in extreme seclusion by a family of Ravens, he’s always felt as if a piece of himself was missing. When he finds that his twin is alive and living with feline shifters, Xavier can’t resist his curiosity.

Fighting their mutual distrust, Xavier and Ranger also find themselves becoming drawn to each other. In a world that’s not always so black and white, can they get beyond prejudices and the taboo, or will their love be lost to hate?

Wolf shifter, Ranger & Eagle shifter, Xavier

Ranger was kicked out of his wolf pack for being gay, since then he became an Alpha of a small stray pack, he got captured by slavers and finally he and his friends were saved by Mitchell and his shifters.

Xavier is an eagle and the twin brother of Riley. He was saved by a brother and a sister who grew up with him Chance and Dulla. And surprise! these two siblings are ravens. Of course they are nice ravens who avoid the rest of the smelly, disgusting ravens and they try to survive with Xavier.

When Xavier is saved by Ranger, Chance and Dulla will also be adopted by the feline shifters and will join the compound. It will not be easy for the felines, the hawks, the wolves and the rest of the shifters to accept two of the enemies.

Ranger and Xavier will be together, but also not easily. Unless his two adopted siblings are accepted, Xavier will not trust without difficulty.

I liked it a lot more than the previous two books in the series but this was still missing something for me to like it enough to give five stars. I don't really know what it was but something just felt off about the story or something was missing but i can't think of what it was

I finally broke down and bought Ranger’s Folly. Again I’m not too happy with the price tag for something that is 234 KB (a novella length) but I seem powerless to stop my curiosity about the Lost Shifters…

We all know the surface Ranger. He is the little alpha of his stray shifters pack and has worked hard to keep them safe from the world. Under his protection though they got captured by slavers and forced into captivity for a year, now they reside with the Feline Shifters and under Mitchell’s protection. We don’t really get to know too much about Ranger except that he is young, a bit of an alpha, and was kicked out of his pack for being gay (which also happens to be Chris’s pack who is going to marry Cassie). On the flip Xavier is Riley’s twin who didn’t die in the family massacre years ago. Instead he was saved by a good raven… which puts an entirely new spin on all of Stephani’s future books… The Ravens don’t have to be bad and nasty! It’s a great twist, and the fact that Chance and Dulla (Xavier’s step siblings) love Xavier so much is weird, yet sweet. I have a feeling that Chance will get a story soon.

The whole plot is about Ranger finding Xavier and ‘saving’ him. This book was good, but was a bit different . The good part was that it was all about Xavier and Ranger, in fact we see more of Chance and Dulla then we do of Riley, Collin, Mitchell, or anyone. The only person who makes more than a brief appearance is Shane and that’s because he’s the one helping Ranger find where Xavier’s hide out is. There is also some sweet ‘surrender’ and romance between Xavier and Ranger. What I found different was that I didn’t feel like Ranger was Ranger. That’s a weird thing to say but I feel like the young Ranger from the earlier books was completely different from the one Mitchell put in command of the extraction unit, and the one ‘going after his mate’. I missed where this personality shifted, especially since in the last few books he was exactly the same. In a way it did feel like he was an extension of the other dominant males from the first few books. There were also no steamy scenes until the last chapter, and Ranger was quite… quite pushy, this led to Xavier at times not having much of his own personality. I got that he was nervous, that he grew up in seclusion, and that he lived for his siblings, but other than that, I didn’t really get a good feel for who Xavier actually was, what he wanted or believed in. The reuniting scene between Riley and Xavier could have also lasted longer than a few paragraphs, but again this is all semantics.

I read The Lost Shifters because they are easy, quick, steamy, and have great characters. I think I was expecting Hecht to keep going in the direction she pushed Shane and Trevor’s story, but she hasn’t. There aren’t bad guys. Riley and Xavier’s stories both had the ‘demon within’ that had to fought, but no capture, no violence, no blood, no enemies. I know I was in the minority but I adored Shane/Trevor’s story. I loved that Shane had to fight to get him back and that there was a clear purpose. I feel like these last two books were more of a filler, or push towards a new arc of characters. If you love the guy meets mate/has a small conflict/ lives happily ever after formula, again you will love this new installment. I will keep hoping for a little more action and conflict.

Hecht is planning on releasing a free novella (I guess an even shorter one) about Cassie and Chris’s wedding, which I’m sure is going to be fun and hilarious to read. Enjoy!

Stephani Hecht really left a bit of a cliffhanger at the end of the previous book, the eleventh in the series, but it set the stage for 'Ranger's Folly' quite nicely. Now this is the twelfth book in the 'Lost Shifters' series and I just can't seem to stop buying and devouring them. Yes, they can be pretty predictable. Yes, they could be a little more fleshed out. But, I'm still addicted as if they were the biggest and best chocolate sundae in the world. Obviously the author is doing something right. *grins*

I hadn't gotten a really good picture of Ranger until this story. I knew he was the alpha of the young, homeless shifters he found on the streets, and he made them family and protected them as best he could, until they were rescued by the feline coalition and now live there. Ranger is a wolf who was kicked out of his pack for being gay, so he was certainly familiar with being on his own. Xavier is Riley's twin, and he apparently escaped the devastation of his mom murdering his siblings, dad and herself that night long ago. He only recently discovered that Riley was alive and he's been watching him. Now Riley was raised by a nice human woman, Xavier, on the other hand, was raised by a family of Ravens. Granted, they're a reclusive family who have nothing to do with other Ravens, but this still causes some issues in the beginning. Uh-oh.

Ranger tracks Xavier spying on Riley and confronts him. Which brings up lust on both their parts and a Taser gun on just one of theirs. Ranger wasn't very happy. So Ranger sets out to hunt down Xavier and he finds more than he was expecting. Returning Xavier and his adopted siblings, Chance and Dulla who are Ravens, to the coalition brings about some interesting changes. Chance and Dulla are nothing like the Ravens seen so far and it's an interesting difference for the coalition. Ranger just wants to spend more time getting to know his mate, and yes, he stakes his claim pretty much from the get-go.

I'm really liking the direction the author is taking the series with introducing the concept of good Ravens, showing the coalition members that there are good and bad in all species. This was a nice addition to the series and I look forward to Chance and Thomas's story next.

The previous two books blow so bad, I came to this book with rather slow expectation. Especially, since I don't really have an interest with either Ranger or Xavier. Ranger might be introduced in previous books but I'm not really too intrigued with him. While Xavier, I guess since I don't like Riley, I'm not ready to like his twin.

FORTUNATELY, this book delivers WAY better. Ranger, a wolf that takes strays is sweet and kind, and I like his protective streak that doesn't really border to being too much. Xavier, has the flair of innocence in him; being an adopted Eagle in Raven's family sure makes him different. So the two of them being together is quite likeable. I also like that it takes until the last chapter for the two of them to consumate their relationship. It's actually nice to read Xavier's interaction with his adopted siblings.

ALTHOUGH, if I am being honest, I'm more interested with Xavier's adopted brother, Chance ... who must turn into a hustler to save his siblings. He gets my heart and I'd love to read his HEA.

Wolf shifter Ranger was beaten and exiled from his pack for being gay. After taking in lost shifters Noah, Riley, and Trevor they formed a small "pack" of friends that stuck together. Surviving a year of slavery together and finally making their way to Mitchell's coalition, Noah, Riley, and Trevor have founds mates and happiness but they are still close as brothers.

While watching out for Riley, Ranger sees a strange shifter sneaking around and spying on Riley and decides to investigate. The Shifter turns out to be Xavier, Riley's missing twin that Riley thought died in the massacre of his family 20 years ago.

Twenty years ago, Xavier was wounded in the massacre that killed everyone in his family except Riley, but he was taken in by a kind family. When he finds Riley, however, he can't help but feel that he has found a piece of himself that has always been missing but he doesn't approach Riley because he feels for his adopted family that he loves very much.

This was a really good book because it introduces some great new characters. Sure, the two MCs fall instantly in love and are mated within like 2 days of meeting, but okay, these are novellas so we have to expect meet-to-mate in less than 60 seconds. There's no time for true courtship in books of this length. But I still enjoyed it because of the twist that is introduced with Xavier's adopted family.

This book is an improvement on the last installment. Here we meet Xavier, Riley's long-lost twin eagle shifter. His mate is Ranger, a wolf shifter. I liked both Xavier and Ranger, although Xavier was pushing the envelope into chick-with-a-dick territory. His saving grace? His relationship with his adopted brother and sister (Chance and Dulla). They were intriguing characters and the first ravens we meet close up. I am looking forward to reading about them in future installments.

Bottom-line: this book was an improvement over the last one.

I think this is one of my favourite in the series - love the angst and the new characters and beneath that rough exterior, Ranger's has a sweet soul anyhow.

This review is for all of the Lost Shifters, Wayne County Wolves, and Assassin's Loyalty books since they are all interconnected and I read them back-to-back pretty much nonstop over a 10 day period. If I have anything to say about a particular book I'll add it under this bulk review. First, I'd like to mention these are more like novellas than books but they have the same underlying theme and pretty much continue where the last left off but with a different couple.

Everything starts out with the Lost Shifters. To summarize there was a war between the feline shifters and the raven shifters. 20 years or so before the first book there was an all out slaughter in which hundreds of feline homes were attacked and burned down all of the occupants believed to be killed. Turns out that the babies and toddlers that were assumed lost were not. They were hidden within the human foster care system for the most part. I won't say how because that'd be a big spoiler. In addition to foster care some kids were sold into slavery and that's where the whole assassin thing comes in. A couple of the main characters marry into the wolf pack so that's where those books come in as well.

Pros: Since the books are so short there are no long drawn out boring details or general angst. There's usually only one sex scene although it's normally long as hell. Which makes the fact some people shelved these as erotica confusing. I liked the world building and even though there were times I think a little more info might have been nice it never detracted from the story or left me confused. Most of the relationships were a sort of love at first sight thing. Or maybe lust or obsession? Despite this the shifters all seem adamant that's not a thing that happens. There wasn't one character I didn't like. My favorite character was Shane and he must have been the author's as well since he got a few extra books and a side series Shane's Chronicles. There's no big end battle or anything but the last book Baily's 9th Life does pretty much tie things up nicely. I think if I'd been reading the series when they were released I'd be a bit miffed because that book didn't come out until a few years later if you weren't reading the assassins books. Also, these books all have some really funny moments and/or dialog.

Cons: The last several books didn't appear to have been edited at all. If if wasn't for the fact that I was so invested in the overall story arc I would have quit reading them. Things like sent instead of scent and too instead of to they instead of them and random wrong words completely. There were also a couple of times that things were said/thought almost verbatim in different parts of a book as if the author forgot she'd already put that info in there already. At the start of the series, they state that all feline shifters are bisexual but at some point the author must have forgotten that detail because suddenly there are gay shifters and homophobia and all this hate. Which brings me to my next con, the themes of the different books started to repeat. Suddenly all these shifters had been thrown out of their previous pack or coalition or human home for being gay. And throughout this huge series of books there was only one straight couple. Like not even a straight friend or whatever. Even the females were all lesbians. It was just kinda unrealistic especially with the whole gay hate thing going on. Usually there's at least a few couples or friends or something on the periphery in gay romances especially in a world this huge. Which brings me to my final con, I had a hard time remembering who was who and what there story was after awhile especially if they weren't mentioned much in previous books. I wish there had been some sort of glossary to review.

Despite the cons, I would still recommend these books. All-in-all I really enjoyed them and was dreading the end although the editing in the last few books really had me also looking forward to the end if I'm being honest.

I'm giving this a 4.5 stars.

The story is about Xavier, an eagle shifter and Riley long lost twin brother, and him stalking the coalition a third time. The reason is that even though he may not like Riley for what he done those many years ago for leaving him dead, he is still his brother and wish to connect with him again. In come Ranger who has been notice him and decided to make his move and find out who is this stalker is. When he found out he is Xavier he try to bring him in but Xavier will have none of that and taser him, yup he did that, and got away. The reason why he did not accept his offer is because Xavier has two adopted sibling Chance and Dulla, who happen to be raven shifter and we all know that they are not welcome that easily. He refuse to leave their side because they are his only family left and he will not lose him. However, something is happen with Xavier and it might change all there life forever. Will Ranger in time to help or will it be to late before something can happen between the two of them.

To be honest I did not have really high hope for this story but it was a short and sweet book with no raven attack and it just center all the deep emotion and pain of this book. We get to hear Xavier side of the story of what happen that night and we also get to know that not all raven are evil because there are also does that will not accept the way of the raven. We also get to meet Chance, who is different from the rest of the raven because he is more concern about his family well-being then his own and is not afraid to make sacrifice for his family. As well as hear the rest of the story about how they meet Xavier and the tragic that fall into there family. I would love to hear his story as well and Dulla was a sweetheart as well.

Overall, it was not a bad book to read since we get to meet new character and can't wait to hear there sorry and of course if you are a Shane fan then we get to see make an appearance all bad and everything and trying to give everyone a hard time but it look like Ranger and his relationship is going okay, as much as Shane is concern.

Ranger has noticed someone following Riley. When he finally confronts the stalker, he discovers it's another eagle. The twin they suspected surprised the murder of their family by their mother. However Xavier freaks and tasers Ranger and escapes. Xavier was raised by ravens who lived in isolation, largely because their daughter has mental disabilities and the ravens ordered her killed. So Xavier considers Dulla and her brother Chance are his siblings as they were raised together. Xavier falls ill from using a special spray which hides your scent, however Ranger manages to track them down just in time. Every agrees that the ravens are not dangerous, and they allow them to come to the compound. Ranger knows that Xavier is his mate and helps him recover. It was pretty typical, although dealing with the handicap of their sister was nice and also to see that not all ravens are evil icky things. I did find though that considering Xavier was raised in total isolation he didn't seem quite as naive about the world as I expected. It opened up some possible other couplings.

2014 Re-read:

Luckily Ranger is a lot nicer in this book that he was in his previous appearances. Although he’s awfully sex-obsessed still. Xavier, in stark contrast, strikes me as amazingly naive – even for someone who grew up mostly in seclusion.
The romance part is on speed and of course completely unbelievable – unless you subscribe to love at first sight. It really reminds me of the fated mates theme, even though it isn’t supposed to be present in this series.

However, I can roll with this since I am actually interested in the story around Xavier’s siblings. Poor Chance. I’m really looking forward to seeing him made happy.

2011 Review:

Okay, this turned out much better than I’d expected. Not that it was so very good, but still. It didn’t annoy me, even if it was nearly contentless. XD
Maybe that’s the way to avoid annoyance. Just make it completely pointless. Seems legit.

It was nice to hear some more about the Raven culture from this book, but I was already sure that the shifter Chance would find his mate in the next book. Also the whole book felt kinda rushed and it is weird that the main character's mate is the brother of the guy he had a friends-with-benefits relationship with.
In addition there was this old wolf-stereotype of submission, dominance and biting again, which is basically pure myth. It made me wish to finally see a wolf-shifter in fiction that is actually lupine and not so primate.
I also had to ask myself why ever since the first book none of the characters had found his love among his own kind, it is always one from another (often very different) breed.
I also didn't like that she had givenm Riley nothing to do, basically she really just made him good for looking pretty and fucking.

I was apprehensive about reading this installment inthe Lost Shifters, since the previous book revealed Xavier was raised by ravens and I expected they were typical raven shifters so how could Xavier turn put good. Anyway, I ened up really enjoying this story.
Xavier's adoptive raven family was an unexpected surprise and I'm looking forward to reading Chance's story. (If he get's one.)
As far as the relationship between Xavier and Ranger goes I thought they made a nice couple and liked the fact the progress in the romance department was on the slow side. So even with Ranger going all growly and Alpha on Xavier they didn't have sex until the end of the book.
Overall I thought this was an enjoyable read and a nice addition to the series.

Xavier is a very innocent guy. He and his adopted siblings were raised in seclusion so Xavier is a bit lost in the world. He is a bit of the typical smaller mate that some shifter stories have. Ranger isn’t near as naïve. The characters in this series have really made it fun to read. I have enjoyed the humor and snarkiness of them. I was a bit disappointed that this one was so short and so lacking in development. It felt like a lot of other shifter based books. There wasn’t much development to the story or the characters. The story itself was lacking in much of anything for a plot. I would still enjoy as a comfort read but wouldn’t recommend it much more than that.

Holding a conversation while chasing? Really? I mean full lengthy sentences and all. That's quite a talent...

Interesting conclusion. For some reason shifters decide that two ravens are defending the eagle. From what information? All they know that they hang out/ live together. How does that translate into ravens protecting the eagle? They do not know the set up.

Huge coincidence that Xavier gets sick at just the right moment... The coincidence of the century. To get rescued at just the right moment, not a moment before or too late..

It has to be a little strange that your mate had sex with your twin brother.

Stephani Hecht is a terrible writer. I don't feel like pulling any punches here, because to do otherwise would be a disservice to my fellow readers. These books are awful, but have their own compelling pull. I wanted to carry on to see what happened next, even though the writing was making me insane, the characters were all the same, and the sex was becoming incredibly redundant. It wasn't until I got to the third book based on Shane (seriously, again?), that I finally hit a wall and couldn't read any more. It was (sorta) fun while it lasted.

Wow, I spent the first 9 pages laughing out loud, the one liners were so funny. It was good to finally have Ranger's story and I loved the choice for his mate.

The introduction of Chance and Dulla came as a pleasant surprise. The side of Raven society I never dreamed of seeing. The author definitely knows how to throw a curve ball, and usually when one least expects it.

Fabulous job Ms Hecht!!!

Book 12 focuses on Ranger and introduces Xavier - Riley's brother (twin), as well as Chance and Dulla.
Xavier has been brought up by Raven shifters - normally the enemies of the feline coalition, so Ranger and his friends are suspicious when they scent the Ravens. However Chance and Dulla are very different to the other Ravens; they bathe and aren't frothing maniacs...
The story was pretty interesting and I liked the new characters.

Terrific... felt like Ms. Hecht went back to her Lost Shifter's roots with this one.
I felt as if I was discovering the series all over again.
I appreciated the slow build up to Xavier's and Ranger's relationship and the ideas keep rolling off on the appearances of other shifters.
Awaiting more Lost Shifters.

i enjoyed this book more than some of the others. what i like the most was there wasn't this overwhelming need for bed play, marking or got to have you cause we're mates, no. just the need to help, understand and get to know each other. with a slightly different insight on the "enemy"
