This is a really interesting paranormal chick-lit, while there is a touch of romance, it is mainly about the suspense. That is all well and good, but I was hoping for more romance.
Veronica is an interesting character, perhaps a bit to hapless at times. Girl, when you are being chased by possible bad guys and you think you got away, do not wander into a creepy abandoned house and woods!!!! Stay in your safe car!! Other than that she is fun to read and immensely like-able.
The fellas surrounding her are another story. If I were in a band with a jerk like Frank, you can bet I would replace him. Doesn't matter how well he plays, he is an a$$hat. The cops are also far from sincere or like-able. Buzz is kind of dishy, but very mysterious. I adored her BFF Kitty, would love to see more of that relationship!
The romance is kind of nonexistent. More of a flirtation. Only a few kisses, no true heat or steam.
The whole book is from Veronica's POV, which limits things. You only know what she is thinking and feeling. This tends to keep you out of the loop about other's motives. In a mystery this is expected, I just wish we had a touch of her friends or the killer in the narration. It would have added depth.
I liked the whole Rockabilly music scene, wish there could have been more of that. Loved the gigs and interactions at the bar/rehearsals. There was more to explore than the mystery killer. On the topic of that killer, there was way too many red herrings to sort through. I get that they were needed, cause otherwise it is pretty dang obvious who the killer is and why.
I listened to the audiobook narrated by Elizabeth Klett, who does an excellent job with all the voices. She has a great tone that really adds to the quality of the read. Her pace is nice and swift, which I prefer. The men's voices were just deep enough to get an impression, but not so much they sounded overdone. Her energy throughout the read matched the pace and feel of the movement in the story. Terrific listening experience all around!
I would be interested in seeing what is next. The ending leaves things open for the possibility of a series. That might be very interesting!
