The best access to Vienna is through its history. This chronologically organized survey of Vienna from its origins to the present does not presuppose any detailed knowledge of Central European history. Accenting cultural, political and social influences, this book covers the following period of the Roman settlement; the medieval residences of the Babenbergers and the early Habsburgs; the Turkish sieges, Reformation and Counter Reformation; the culture of the Baroque court; reforms of the Enlightenment; the lifestyle of Viennese Biedermeier; political and cultural transformations in the age of Franz Joseph; interwar Vienna; the Nazi occupation; post-World War II four power occupation; and the development of the city from 1955 until today.
Good overall history of Vienna. It took me a while to find a good, brief history of Vienna. Historians seem to love writing about "fin de siecle" Vienna, or Vienna ca. 1900—which is fine, but I wanted something much more broad. This book gave me a nice overview of the city's full history. There are some helpful appendices as well, including a timeline and a list of places to visit in relation to each chapter. I may just end up buying this one in electronic form and taking it with me on my study abroad trip.
