MY RATING GUIDE: 3.5 Stars (closer to 4 than 3). I discovered Maureen Miller’s titles a while ago and am enjoying reading my way through them. LOST NIGHT wasn’t among my favorite Miller titles, so far, but it captured my attention and I cared about the characters. (Note -THE LOST NIGHT was published in 2015. Later, it apparently was revised and re-released as BORROWED TIME. The former version was in my tbrs so it’s the version I read).
1= dnf/What was that?; 2= Nope, not for me; 3= This was okay/fairly good & might or might not read it again; 3.5= I ENJOYED THIS & might read it again; 4= I liked it a lot & would read it again; 5= I Loved this; it was great! & most likely will read again (I SELDOM give 5 Stars).
Near a naval base on the Northeast coast, January ~
Worn out from near death situations present in his previous career, former Naval Intelligence operative Nate Morrison, 36, changed careers 3yrs ago looking for something with less danger and more stability. Except for a few personality differences within the hierarchy, Nate’s position as Chief of Security for National Marine Dynamics, a government funded research facility with highly classified projects connected to Homeland Security has mostly met his expectations. Nate was content with the career change until several days ago when 2 NMD engineers, for no apparent reason, stole blueprints from one of the secured labs. The nature of ideas continuously generated at NMD requires absolute workplace security. Such a major theft requires Nate to quickly locate the engineers and return with them and the missing blueprints.
Marine engineer Emily Brennan’s younger brother Colin is an incredibly brilliant young man but his questionable interpersonal skills hamper his relationships with his peers. As a NMD employee, Emily was recently able to secure a research engineer position for Colin as well. Things were going well enough until Colin began dabbling with a new concept which he suddenly realized would cause the death of innocent people. Colin convinced Emily that they needed to remove his incompleted drawings from NMD labs before anyone noticed them. While doing this, Emily gets caught by the security camera. Now both Colin and Emily are on the run from the very company that once employed them and Security Chief Nate Morrison has been sent to locate them and bring them back for questioning.
Comments ~
LOST NIGHT is a standalone, Proximity-Danger/On-the-Run, Slow-Burn, Enemies to More trope Suspense.Intrigue.Romance novel. I was quickly pulled into the story but later occasionally found my mind wandering. I still enjoyed the intrigue and wondered how the various characters connected, exactly what information had been stolen, how the info might cause harm and to whom and how the main characters would survive the manhunt.
Proximity Danger/On the Run novels are among my favorite tropes. I also prefer books with minimal angst (stemming from miscommunication or misunderstandings). LOST NIGHT fell into this preferred niche. The Slow Burn intimacy which developed in LOST NIGHT (unlike most Romance fiction today) was also refreshingly Clean (See below).
Overall, I enjoyed LOST NIGHT and recommend it to readers who enjoy:
> Action/Adventure and Suspense Romance novels.
> Proximity Danger/‘On-the-Run’ trope Thrillers.
> Enemies to More trope.
> Minimal angst between characters.
> Strong male and female characters.
> Intelligent female characters.
> Seasoned/Mature characters.
> Slow Burn (mostly Clean) Romances with HEAs.
