Back in the day, the 'male adventure' genre was a thing, and Doomsday Ship, published in 1982, fits squarely in it. The story takes place toward the end of WWII when Nazi Germany is on the ropes (1944?). Our heroes are a rag-tag group of American G.I., aviators, who have worn out their welcome in the UK; think Baa Baa Black Sheep. Anyway, their 'thing' is to fly B-17s as drones for the 'Andromeda' project (and yes, this program did exist; Price really did his homework here). Just as they are about to leave on a ship for the States, UK intel picks up some bad, make that really bad, info.

The Nazis refuse to go away and are planning a secret mission to turn the tide of the war. A sister battleship of the Bismarck is being refitted in Norway as the first navy ship to fire V1 rockets. The Nazi's plan is audacious-- since the US and other Allied fleets are in the Pacific, they plan to send a massive flotilla headed by the Battleship (Fredrick the Great) to pound the east coast of the USA. Worse, inside the V1 rockets are nerve gases and various biological weapons. Nothing the US or UK has in the area has a chance of stopping it! Yet, their may be a chance-- the drone B-17s!

Price clearly knows his WWII planes and ships and yes, the US did have a B17 drone program. Basically, the 'mother' B17's crew would fly the drone B17, loaded with thousands of pounds of explosives, via a privative remote control. The plan-- take out the Fredrick! Of course, all kinds of trials and tribulations ensue. The US Black Sheep have to operate under the radar of their own former commanding officer, somehow procure the B17s, arm them, and the get the drones to the Germans...

Price Doomsday Ship paces the story well, and if you are into WWII military arcana, you will probably dig this. Of course, we have a cheesy romance tossed in and expect mid 20th century sexism writ large. As a period piece, however, it works well. Why four stars? For what it is, it does the job nicely!

This book was pretty good, about a misfit American unit stationed in England
during the second world war. They were kicked out of England but before they could leave they were told to stay and help the British to find the Doomsday Ship that the Nazis had dispatched.
I would recommend this book.
