Joel McEverin bändihistoriikki on kerrassaan riemastuttavaa luettavaa. Vuosikymmenet vaihtuvat, mutta silti rock n’ rollin legendaarinen yhtye Motörhead jatkaa menestyksestä toiseen.
Rockin historiasta kiinnostuneille tuhti paketti tarjoaa oivan tavan tutustua moniäänisesti suurimpaan elossa olevaan rokkarilegendaan. Lemmy-kulttia valotetaan ja taustoitetaan monipuolisesti unohtamatta ”pyhää kolmiyhteyttä” sex, drugs and rock n’ roll. Siitä huolimatta tämä ahkerasti keikkaileva Kindermunia kokoava ja natsikamaa keräävä omintakeinen basistifilosofi juopottelee lähes päivittäin. Silti maksa on kuin vastasyntyneellä!
Niinpä niin… Palataan Englantiin ja Stokeen. Yksinhuoltajaäidin boheemi poika sai äikänmaikaltaan ymmärrystä, vaikkei koulunkäynti maistunutkaan. Nuoruusvuosiin kuului niin huumeiden myymistä kuin roudarinakin toimimista. Woodin veljekset sekä Jimmy Hendrix kuuluivat tuttavuuksiin.
Musiikillinen ura lähti käyntiin Hawkwindin riveissä, kunnes tiet erkanivat. 1975 perustettiin Motörhead, joka syntyi kapinoimaan kaikkea vastaan. Heti perustamisensa jälkeen bändiä on ollut vaikea lokeroida, milloin hevibändiksi, milloin punkiin kuuluvaksi. Yrittipä Lemmy saada Sid Vicioustakin oppimaan basson soitossa, muttei siitä mitään tullut. Lemmy toteaa kirjassaan usein, että he ovat puhdas rokkibändi, vaikka usein punkkarimoshaajat diggasivat siitä.
Vuodet vierivät, ja kiertueita tehdään, Damned, BÖC, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Def Leppard, Sepeltura, WASP ja monet muut bändit kiersivät bändin kanssa ympäri maailmaa.
Joe Petagno nousee vahvasti esille, sillä onhan hänen luomansa bänditunnus: Warpig aka Snaggletooth. Monipuolinen, arvostettu hevitaiteilija tulee monta kertaa yhtyeen avuksi ja suunnittelee entistä ahdistavampia levykansia, ja menestys on taattu.
Rääväsuinen suunsa puhtaaksi puhuvalla Lemmyllä on mielipiteet valmiina aina Obamasta mädännäiseen levyteollisuuden vippaskonsteihin saakka. Usein levyfirmaa vaihtanut yhtye on joutunut toistuvasti julkaisukieltoihin riitojen vuoksi. Kriittisimmät vaiheet koettiin Sonyn sopimuskaudella, sillä yhtiö, Lemmyn sanoin, yritti estää kaikin tavoin bändin menestyksen. Biisien soittaminen kiellettiin Yhdysvalloissa, markkinointi lopetettiin, estettiin sopimuspykäliin vedoten lähteminen muualle.
Musiikillisesti kenties parasta antia ovat livetaltionnit, esim. No Sleep till Hammersmith, Ace of Spades, ja Mickey Deen liityttyä mukaan levyt Bastards ja uudempi Inferno.
Managerien ja tuottajien roolia korostetaan, ja lähdetään Joe Secundasta (T. Rexin manageri) aina Cameron Webbiin, jonka ansiosta garagetyylinen soundi sai aikaisempaan verrattuna syvyyttä riffeihin ja bassokuvioihin, joista monet ovat ottaneet vaikutteita, aina Metallicaa myöden. Soittipa tämä bändi myös Lemmyn synttäreillä samanlaiset tatskat käsissään kuin Motörheadin keulakuvalla. Myös Carage inc.-plätyllä on hyviä covereita.
Loppupuolella elämäkertaa koko levyteollisuus saa kuulla kunniansa ja eritoten tuotantokoneiston epämoraaliset toimintatavat. Saavatpa siinä ohessa myös karaokekisoja tuottanut Simon Cowell ja hänen jäljittelijänsä kuulla kunniansa. Lemmyhän on antiteesi tämmöiselle imitointikulttuurille, jolla ei juuri ole tekemistä taiteen kanssa.
Teoksen kruunaa miltei ”vaatimattomasti” pohdinnat elämän tarkoituksesta: ”En enää etsi elämän syvempää tarkoitusta. Tiedän, mikä se on. Olen saanut kokea sen.”

The only thing you see, you know it's gonna be, the Ace of Spades, The Ace of Spades. This was an interesting book for me to read. I was fully introduced to Motorhead in the early 2000s. To think that I followed them for the last 15 years of their existence was something to think about. To see what kind of person Lemmy was really got my attention. The more I learned about Motorhead the more I hoped to one day see them live. That won't happen but my appreciation for them has only grown since I first had a real deep dive into what Motorhead was all about. The book does a good job of laying things about the band out for the reader. I think this and the Lemmy documentary compliment each other. Read the book, watch the documentary and you see what one was saying through the eyes of the other.

The book is a compilation of interviews the author did with Lemmy and interviews from various magazines and websites that were done with Lemmy, past and present band members and other musicians. It covers Lemmy's entire life and career, the band's line up changes, brief bios of each band member, what songs are on each album and their dvd releases. It's a bit sad that as I was reading it original member Fast Eddie Clarke died.
The main focus of the book is Lemmy, though the author does give some background on the other band members and the artist who created their mascot, Snaggletooth. I learned a lot about how record companies work through this book. Lemmy mentions that he really had no control of when "Best of" compilations were released or what was on them. The same with live albums. I was also surprised that he didn't have more money. At one point in the book he mentioned that if he stopped touring he'd have enough to live on for maybe "three good years" and that was around their 30 year anniversary.
Since they're from England, the book is very British with slang, English spelling and such. There's also lots of swearing and mentions of sex, drinking and drug use. If any of that bothers you, a book about Motorhead is not the book for you.
Most of the chapters cover a two year period because the band had a two year tour/album cycle. Some of the earlier chapters only cover one year. This is an interactive ebook with links to songs and playlists and plenty of great photos. I really enjoyed that part. This edition is an updated reissue of the original 2012 version and has an added last chapter to cover the deaths of Lemmy, former guitar player Michael "Wurzel" Burston and original drummer Phil "Philthy Animal" Taylor.
This was a good book and I learned a lot more about Motorhead and Lemmy. I'm not their biggest fan or anything, but I like their music. The book has left me with a greater appreciation of their impact on rock music and a list of songs that I need to hear. I'd recommend it to anyone whose a fan of the band.

Pretty good. Always fun to ready Lemmy's wise and funny thoughts. A bit short book, could have more detail on making of some of the albums. Also, when there's talk about album cover art, it would have been nice if the artwork pictures were there to look at. So, it's a bit lacking on stuff like that but the text is good anyway.

This is more of a coffee table book than a serious biography. Many quotes were repeated, some many times. Often this felt like a poorly assembled Wikipedia article or oral history. As far as band biographies go, a very weak offering.\

Melko vähän arvostamani Joel McIverin "Motörhead" (Like, 2012) on nimensä mukaisesti bändihistoriikki yhdestä kaikkien aikojen legendaarisimmasta rock-yhtyeestä ja ennen kaikkea sen nokkamiehestä Lemmy Kilmisteristä, vaikka kirjoittaja ilmoittaakin esipuheessa pyrkivänsä eroon vain yhden miehen näkökulmasta. Siinä hän ei onnistu erityisen hyvin, mutta toisaalta on otettava huomioon, että Lemmy ON monessa mielessä Motörhead.
McIver on koostanut kirjan etupäässä vanhoista haastatteluista, joita hän suruttomasti lainaa sellaisenaan. Lisäksi kirja olisi kaivannut hieman editointia, sillä nyt siinä on mukana jonkin verran toistoa ja sanalla sanoen tarpeettomia listauksia niistä maista, joissa bändi kulloisenakin vuonna on sattunut kiertämään. Lähes kritiikitön lähestymistapa aiheeseen tympäisee: yhtyeen ja sen jäsenten tekosia ei pahemmin kyseenalaisteta, eikä kriittisiä soraääniä oikeastaan kuulla kuin harvakseltaan.

Fades in interest as you get later into the band's career. Once they're set with their present-day lineup and settle in to cranking albums out, there is a lot of padding with Lemmy's personal and political opinions. Sometimes the less you hear from Lemmy, the better. Just because he's a bright guy doesn't mean he has anything that interesting to say.

Is there some kind of special rule that books about bands are allowed to be much worse than other books in general? I often think of this reading these, the whole illiterature and immature drug and what not worshiping going on strong on this one too. It could have been SO much better, done by someone with a wit and knowledge. Lemmy gave an ok for this? Duh.

Acho que o livro acrescenta muito pouco e deixa de abordar com um pouco mais de profundidade o trabalho artístico da banda. Fácil de ler, mas muito superfical.
