“What was the inspiration behind the creation of this book?”

Caleb’s Crossing was loosely based on the life of Caleb Cheeshahteaumauck, a Wôpanâak inhabitant of the island off the coast of Massachusetts now known as Martha’s Vineyard.

Brooks lives there with her husband and children, and her interest in the Native American culture came about from well-prepared materials prepared by the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head/Aquinnah.

Her first inspiration was a map on which was inscribed: The Birthplace of Caleb: First Native American Graduate of Harvard. She was also able to glean several tidbits of information from individual tribe members and...
