The de Burghs #3

Robber Bride

Rate this book
Maiden—Warrior—Lover!

This was the litany Simon de Burgh chanted whenever he gazed upon Bethia Burnel. Gifted with fighting prowess to rival any of his knights, the maddening woman had laid siege to his vision of how the world should be—and captured his heart in the battle!

Simon de Burgh was infuriating—full of raw power and male conviction, even when Bethia had him bound hand and foot, deep in her forest lair. But she would prove to His Arrogance that she could best him yet again—despite her heart's thundering refrain that she had finally met her match!

After devouring Taming the Wolf and the De Burgh Bride, I was eagerly awaiting Simon's story. While this is a "not to be missed series", Robber Bride left much to be desired.

Robber Bride is much more "battle focused" than "romance focused". I guess this is what I should've expected with Simon's story as he is the "warrior" of the bunch. What I didn't expect was to feel such apathy for these characters. I guess this is a matter of preference, but I like my heroines tough, but also "soft". They need to be able to hold their own, but also make me believe that they have heart. In the De Burgh Bride, the Fitzhugh was also a tough lady.....but throughout the story we see her vulnerability and the gradual opening of her heart. I never felt this with Bethia. I found myself hoping that the next chapter would get better, but alas I was disappointed at every turn.

Towards the end I found myself speed reading to get through to the end....not a good sign for me. Whereas with Taming the Wolf and the De Burgh Bride I found myself stalling so that the book wouldn't end and "savoring" each paragraph....RELIEF is the emotion I felt when turning the last page of this book.

In a series there are usually books that are "better than others"...for me this one fell short. I still recommend this series wholeheartedly and hope that the next brother's stories more resemble the first two!

Simon, simon, simon...

#3 Briganti e cavalieri
#3.5 Ospite a sorpresa (racconto)
#4 La strega e il cavaliere
#5 La novizia e il cavaliere
#6 Il cavaliere nero
#7 L'ultimo cavaliere

I enjoyed it! Few complaints. I guess you could say there's a bit of a Robin Hood (with a twist) theme here, but that's mostly because RH is the enduring myth of this kind of retaliation to awful stewardship. Still--it's there and not worser for it.

The heroine is 'not like other girls' but in a way that suits the hero and is fitting for her, not in a way that bashes other women. Yes, the hero has a 'low opinion' of women at the start, but it's more malformed than misogyny, and he willingly learns differently as he gets to know the heroine. Which is a nice twist; he learns about her and has his mind changed, is softened, is enlightened, rather than her doing or being biddable. Her being fit and skilled is an attraction for him, not something to be tamed. Nice.

They have excellent chemistry and when it finally culminates it's satisfying and also lasts / is explored in ways that a lot of harlequins aren't usually given.

She has a mission. And he needs one so he's glad to have found hers (and her). They're well matched therein, and learn of all the other ways they're suited as the plot rolls along.

Their HEA is believable and the hero holding his ground to want *less* (attention, responsibility, prestige) makes it even more so, including that he's found who he is and wants to be.

I like that he's not the most handsome or most clever or most anything other than himself, and that's clearly part because he's one of six brothers each with their strengths and these brothers are each going to get a book we want to be enticed to read, but it's still a welcome departure to have him be good at This and not All Things.

Which, again--this was found at the local library month-long book sale, I got it because why not, but whoops it's one in a series. But different from other books acquired the same way, if I saw the others in the series I would grab them & give them a read.

Simon dobude zpátky hrad jejího otce a bude.

This book should have been called Outlaw Bride. Nice cover though.

This was a very frustrating book to read because it had the plot of a 5 star book. The heroine was awesome: strong, smart, beautiful, loyal, brave and fiercely independent. The hero was handsome, brave, proud, brooding and protective.

Bethia's home has been taken over by a nefarious interloper. She fakes her death and becomes an outlaw in the forest with her band of loyal men to steal from this intruder and get back what is hers. She attacks Simon and his men, thinking they are mercenaries come to help the intruder. And so begins a turbulent relationship.

Unfortunately, at least 60% of the book was our H and h's inner conflict over each other plus Simon's constant musings about his brothers. There was very little about what is going on inside Bethia's home while she is in the forest aside from hearing the odd sentence about how horrible her would-be fiance was treating everyone. There was little action when the battle inside her home ensued. There was little action period, besides sex of course.

A re~read. I have issues about in~fighting among allies specially if the threat is real and when such squabbling is between a male alpha and a female one, it is even worse. And that is what this book is mostly about. The Humor is spot~on though, so this balances my irritation about aforementioned bickering. All in all. it is still full of fun and adventure.

Book 3 in the de Burgh series

It’s Simon’s turn to be smitten by a woman! But, not just any woman could catchy the always-on-the-move-battling de Burgh brother. A warrior woman, Bethia Burnel, who is held up in the forest, leading a band of men who remain faithful to her in order to win back what is rightfully hers, would do for Simon.

It sounds like a great premise for a book, right? I sure thought so! However, I did not enjoy this story as much as numbers 1, 2, and 3.5. I thought that both Simon and Bethia were arrogant, pig-headed, and often acted like children. They also did not communicate to each other very well in the book, and overall did not have many scenes together, which I found frustrating in a short book of less than 300 pages. The plot, in my opinion, could have had a faster pace to it as well. I also get frustrated when the h/h don’t admit their feelings until the last couple pages of the book. However, I did enjoy the ending as we got to see all the de Burgh brothers together. Robin offers to hold Baddersly for Dunstan (the Wolf of Wesex, hero in Taming the Wolf). Baddersly is a property Dunstan inherited from his wife. I am looking forward to continuing this wonderful series.

Recomendo!!!

i have this in e-book format.

This is your typical alpha male historical romance. Except it had a twist. Whereas in other alpha male romance books the guy gets the girl and is slowly 'tamed' by her gentleness. And she accepts that he is all wise and knowing and agrees to be lead by him. or in some more progressive cases to subtlety lead him without him knowing it. This time the alpha male is bested again and again by his own chauvinistic ways. and int he end, i won't be spoiling this for you by saving that he gets the girl like all good romances. But with a nice twist of her not changing at all. i look fwrd to trying other books by Deborah Simmons to see if she is true to form with those.

The female lead in this romance (Bethia) is patterned after Robin Hood. A different take from the normal historical romance. I just wish I had known this was part of a series when I picked this one. It was ok, but I am not going to read the rest of the series.
