Shelby McKinney thought she had it all—a great marriage, three wonderful children and a beautiful house in Summerville, South Carolina. On the surface, everything in Shelby’s life appeared near-perfect. Until her beloved grandfather, Luther Mellon suddenly died, purposely leaving Shelby—whom everyone knew was Luther’s favorite family member—out of his will, in order to get her full, undivided attention.
Everything suddenly unraveled in Shelby’s life, rendering her completely inconsolable, until she mysteriously hears from her late-grandfather from the grave, informing Shelby that he hadn’t forgotten about her after all. But if she wants her inheritance, she needs to find it, buried six-feet beneath the sand, somewhere in Florida.
The only available clues—limited as they are—were stored in a safe deposit box, also two states south of hers, in Florida. Shelby is given ninety-days in which to locate the bank housing the safe deposit box, decipher all clues, and unearth her buried inheritance. If she doesn’t find it within the ninety-day time frame, she’ll be forced to forfeit it altogether.
Facing insurmountable odds, Shelby embarks on this exciting adventure, that very quickly turns dangerous, when she learns she isn’t the only one searching for the buried treasure chest. Three extremely greedy, dangerous men, are carefully monitoring Shelby’s every move, fully determined to use any and all necessary measures, to steal it from Shelby, if and when she ever unearths it.
Shelby's buried treasure hunt very quickly turns into a tumultuous voyage of self-discovery, that nearly costs Shelby her life. Along the way, she is confronted by the ever-present spirit world, like never before! But in the end, with one-hundred and forty strangers constantly praying for her, Shelby McKinney ultimately realizes the adventure her beloved grandfather sent her on, was so much more than a personal quest to find her buried inheritance.
In the end, Shelby McKinney finds so much more than that underneath the pelican trees...

On the surface, Shelby had all she could ever want. So why was she so devastated when her wealthy grandfather left her out of his will? Could it be the late Luther Mellon wanted to give his favorite grandchild more than a piece of his millions? Perhaps he wanted her to discover herself, her sense of adventure and what is truly valuable in life…
THE PELICAN TREES by Patrick Higgins actually started out a little iffy for me with all of the greed and disappointment in an expected inheritance. Soon I discovered the mystery portion, a treasure hunt that would become filled with danger and intrigue, faith and self-discovery. Still, I had a difficult time warming up to the characters, particularly Shelby. I will say, the treasure was kind of clever and tossing in some bad guys on the same hunt, well, let the fun begin!
Patrick Higgins has a fabulous story here, complete with human frailties such as greed, a sense of entitlement and not living life to its fullest, through faith, word and deed. This is a quick read and many will find it inspirational and uplifting in many ways. Personally, I would have loved to meet Luther Mellon!

I have never said this about a book, but THE PELICAN TREES needs to be made into a movie. (The role of Mabel would HAVE to be given to Tess Harper!)
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: There were a few, although very few, grammatical errors. As well, the author often repeated the same phrases, making the book seem wordy at times. This did take away from the natural flow, but the content of the novel more than made up for it.
WHAT I DID LIKE: The storyline was quite original.
The author took concepts that are difficult to fathom and, while Scipturally accurate, widely ignored or outright contested. He merged this controversial true subject of demonic spirits with a fictional tale, and the finished work is compelling - no easy feat.
The subject of forgiveness has been explored by many authors, yet this author weaves the theme through a tale that is original, fresh, and captivating enough to make it seem like a new concept.
I will be looking for more from this author. In the meantime, someone get this forwarded to a director!
Even as a Christian forgiving is difficult, but is extremely important. Growth in your walk with Christ will not happen until you learn to forgive. In my walk i say forgiveness is for the injured person more than the person doing the injury. And This author has laid it out well. So who is this book for? The unsaved surely, but for the Christian most definitely! So much depth here for the Christian. Please read this book and grow spiritually! You will never regret it. Read and grow.
Patrick Higgins has once again blown me away! It all started with his book "The Unannounced Christmas Visitor" and has led me to discover "The Pelican Trees". I am so amazed at the depth of the characters in this book. The author really peeled away layer after layer and showed exactly what they were made of. It made that much more of an impact when reading the end of the book. The struggles and temptations encountered were no different than what many of us deal with on a daily basis. It made everything so much more real as you read the book. Shelby just blew me away! I can recall my zest for life when I was younger and how I have slowly let things settle as I grew comfortable in my everyday. Losing my own Identity in raising my kids. Seeing where I made decisions on what kept me safe and comfortable, instead of stepping out in faith. I am also able to see where I need to work on forgiving a few folks in my life & how that has helped to cause my spiritual walk to become stagnant. It's allowed Satan a handhold into my mind. So many things I need to work on have been shown to me through reading this book.
I can clearly see the hand of God working through this book. God is definitely using Patrick Higgins to deliver messages that need to be said. I am so thankful that Mr. Higgins has opened himself up to being a vessel to create these types of literary works that not only help lead people to accepting Jesus into their hearts, but also teach so much more about what it means to be a Christian. I feel like I have inhaled a breath of fresh air just after reading this book. I can't wait to see how I feel after I work on forgiving those I need to forgive.
While I know that everything was completed that was meant to be in this book, I can't help but want more. I'd love to catch up with everyone right around the time of Stuart's parole hearing. Get a chance to see what Stuart accomplished in the prison, maybe a special prison ministry? See what Shelby was able to do with Operation Forgiveness. Find out what Trevor, BJ, and Brooke are up to. Discover the changes in the Mellon family and everyone they've come into contact with. Maybe one day Mr. Higgins will humor me with a follow-up to "The Pelican Trees"...
OMG...the message of forgiveness is woven into the most intricate story I have ever read. Go along on the journey as Shelby finds her treasured inheritance, but be ready for a tear-jerker twist at every turn! This book mesmerized me, and I honestly could not put it down. I hope others feel the same way, as they open their minds to possibilities not even imagined.
I loved it!! I'm a long time Christian, and this is and inspiring read! I can never Praise Jesus enough when someone discovers his truth. This reminds me everyone's story is different and God chose us! I pray God continues to use you and many come to Christ because of the gift he has given you.
Knowing the novel was by Patrick Higgins, I knew I was in for a fantastic read. The Pelican Trees is no exception. The storyline had me running the gamut of emotions.
The main character, Shelby, went through a lot of emotions due to the circumstances she faced. At times she felt like giving up in her search for the treasure. Little did she know, that her reward went far beyond the treasure. There was a decision that meant the difference between life and death.
The spiritual message was well presented and took me on a roller-coaster ride of emotions from excitement to the anticipation of things to come. The underlying message of God's grace, forgiveness, and strength to overcome any obstacle with God's help came through loud and clear.
If you don't read but one book this year, make it the Pelican Trees. An amazing read not to be missed.
I love this book. Starting with an intriguing mystery and continuing tension as the story flows, I was drawn in immediately and was held captive. Patrick Higgins offers a wonderfully developed cast of characters, full of life and dimension. This book is Christian fiction written appealingly. The underlying principles are well placed and support the storyline. I particularly appreciate the way the author addresses the concept of spiritual warfare. It brings the subject into clarity while serving as the true protagonist in the book. Patrick Higgins has written a good number of books and I feel this one is at the top of the stack. Grab a copy of this book and be entertained and taught.
Shelby is left out of her beloved grandfather's will ... then she receives a letter from him a few days after the reading of the will that will send her on a h7nt for buried treasure--her inheritance, as well as a life changing event. A great story of redemption and the blessing of forgiveness!
This book services as an eye opener for every human being on this planet ! I Jesus Christ is the only way that leadth to enternal life. Share this book with as many unsaved ones as possible. The time is at hand
An amazing way to explain the dire need for forgiveness. Everyone should read this book. I know someone close who needs to forgive himself and can use this story. Thank you, Patrick for writing this.
This book was so good. There were times I just couldn't put it down. The best part about The Pelican Trees story is that it has allowed me to forgive one specific person within my family, who has caused me great heartache since my mother's death 10 years ago. I have passed this life-changing book on to other members of our staff, for them to read and also recommend. And I will definitely recommend this book to others.. There are a few non-Christians in my life that I will recommend the book to as well. Thanks for the opportunity to read and comment on the book.
Patrick Higgins is one of the most gifted authors in Christian fact & fiction books today. I'm so glad that I borrowed the first book I read of his from Kindle Unlimited. I started with the Chaos In The Blink Of An Eye collection; after reading all eight books available at this time, I looked for other books he had written and found a couple more. I thoroughly have enjoyed these books and highly recommend this author. The Pelican Trees is an exciting book that made me think about salvation and how God always has a plan and is always in control. I'm sure y'all will enjoy it also.
This book is incredible. Shelby goes on a treasure hunt, risks her life, and finds the greatest Treasure of all...a relationship with God. (But puhleeze!! "Misses" refers to two or more unmarried females. Here in the South, we use "Missus," " Mrs. " or just plain old "Miz.". And BJ's " awesomeeeeee, " well, the final "e" in "awesome" is silent. Therefore, he is yelling "Awesom-eeeee." 😊 )
Patrick Higgins tells an incredible story that must be read
Shelby McKinney as leading a comfortable life what she didn't know was that she wasnt truly living . Telling Shelbys story along with occasionally Giving us a glimpse into the spiritual world that is constantly around us , Patrick Higgins will take you for a ride that will run you as his reader through a gambit of emotions and keep you invested chapter after chapter . The Pelican Trees is a must read
What a wonderful story!! I really enjoyed immersing myself in this very creative work. This is the book that will leave you thinking for days after you've finished reading it. I loved the character development! Will we get to hear from Shelby in the future? It would be a BLESSING.
I like the way this kept well within biblical principles. The story line was riveting and really kept my interest. I really liked that not only salvation was key the forgiveness was an equally important issue we often push out of our vision because it just seems to hard.
I really wanted to like this book. With poor editing, boring and repetitive scenes and dialogues, predictable plot, poorly developed and average characters, I plodded through it only because I hate to start a book and not finish it.
Have you needed or wanted to give forgiveness to another. Have you thought about God and figured so!what you would believe. This novel will hold you in its grasp from beginning to the end.
What a precious book. I couldn’t put it down and ended up reading it all in one day. It’s an excellent Guide to how every Christian should strive to live both in boldly proclaiming the Word as well as remembering to forgive every wrong done.
This was the best written book I have read outside of the Bible for its content to keep me reading all hours!! I have finished the first seven series of the books by Patrick Higgins and they were also tops in my opinion and am recommending all his books to friends and family.
It took you on a journey. The first part was a bit tough to get through but I am so glad I made it to the end what a blessing this journey has been for me.
I read a lot of Christian fiction because it in line with my values. This book, however, I found way too preachy and redundant. I evened up skimming through to find the plot. There are only so much descriptions of demons that actually move the story line. I enjoyed the basic story line of Shelby trying to find her inheritance, building a relationship with God and learning to forgive. But overall I think this novel would only work for a born again Christian. I will steer clear of Patrick Higgins in the future.
