John Arcudi has made a name for himself by scripting comics that manage to combine long-running subplots with impeccable characterization and action sequences, making for some of the most exciting and consistently good comics out today.
This was a weird one. An Alien is terrorizing a feudal space colony run by religious fanatics. The only weapons the constables have are crossbows which obviously aren't going to be very effective against a killing machine that bleeds acid. This just isn't put together very well and is hard to follow. richard Corbin draws very creepy aliens but fugly people.
(Zero spoiler review) 2.75/5 Read as part of the Aliens omnibus volume 3 collection, and due to the stunning lack of competence demonstrated throughout the collection up until Alien's alchemy, the modest enjoyment I received from it not being a giant puddle of rancid ass helped it to a slightly more positive reception than it may have received amidst more esteemed company. I could pick the Richard Corben art straight off the bat, which is pretty darn solid, despite his highly stylised and odd-looking human models. The inking and the colours were on point, and the narrative and characters, although far from exemplary, were enough to keep me turning the pages. Should you come across this in a smaller collected edition or singles, it's worth a read, especially if you're a fan of Richard Corben's art. Just don't expect anything outstanding. 2.75/5
Unlike other artists who worked on Aliens comics, the great late Richard Corben knew what made H.R. Giger's monster so scary in the original Alien movie - Ridley Scott opted not to show it too much. Scott made it an integral part of darkness by giving us just glimpses of it. When you see it, it is not just a monster, it is an extension of darkness, a Lovecraftian boogeyman from outer space. Corben used the same method for Alchemy. His monster lurks in the shadows, it is a dark silhouette crouching atop a building under the full moon. When attacking its victims, its appearance is horriffic, ugly and grotesque, but never overexposed. And the story is superb, unlike the others in the series. Whenever I read Aliens, I get mad scientists, aliens, soldiers and guns. Not here, thankfully.
Nice artwork by Richard Corben, but the story feels very rushed, with not nearly enough time spent on establishing the setting and backstory, which are the most interesting things about this otherwise run of the mill Alien tale.
