Lily desperately needs a fresh start. She find that at Hill Chase. She wouldn't do anything to endanger the job she loves so much. But when temptation comes in shape of Ethan Marshall, the grandson of her boss, it near impossible to resist.
Ethan is enchanted by the beautiful stable girl. He knows he shouldn't get involved with somebody who works for his grandfather, but there something different about her. Something that makes her even more attractive.
Lily is a daughter of a con man, and has done everything she could to get away from that kind of life. She doesn't trust easily, but Ethan is patient, kind and special.
Ethan's entire family is in politics, so he values honesty over everything. So when he finds out about Lily's past his reaction is ugly. And that's the thing that bothered me. He didn't even want to listen to her explanations and he kept jumping to conclusions. His world was black and white, no shades of grey allowed.
I like Ethan's brothers and I'm looking forward to reading their books.
Enjoyed the book, a bit different. Based on the Marshall family, into politics and a bit dysfunctional(Ethan's father). Lily works for the grand-parents(with horses). Ethan comes home, pursues her, they start a no strings things and then he takes her into the spot-light.
I enjoyed Lily and how she overcame her upbringing and came beyond it but I did find it foolish that she went into public but everything was like a Cinderella moment for her.
Ethan reacted badly when he found out but Lily also didn't listen quietly that I liked. She leaves, he chases, a decent read.
The heroine Lily is a stable hand on the estate of a high powered political family. Lily is a rehabilitated youth offender who is making a fresh start away from the influence of her criminal father. The hero Ethan is the grandson of the owner of the estate and has come back for a short time. He and Lily meet one morning and are instantly attracted to one anther, Ethan likes that Lily is a private person and doesn't seem avaricious in anyway and he pursues her for an affair. Lily knows she shouldn't get involved with Ethan as not only is she employed by his family but also her past wouldn't look good to this influential family. Their relationship starts off casual with no strings but quickly becomes deeper and Ethan begins to take her into the spotlight with him. But with disapproving family and Lily's secrets it's not long before this comes crashing down.
I really enjoyed this book, it had me hooked from the first page. The idea of the plot based around a powerful political family is both interesting and original. What is especially great about this book is that the story is not bogged down by political information, instead there are little bite sized pieces of information, juicy enough to intrigue you but not so much that it takes the focus away from the central relationship. The author also gives some really tantalising glimpses into the dysfunction of the family and I'm really looking forward to reading the other books in this mini-series. The relationship between Lily and Ethan develops beautifully, starting off casual it slowly becomes more and more intense, I found this really believable. Lily and Ethan are wonderful characters that were able to grow as the story progressed. The Cinderella aspect of the love-story may be a little clichéd but it works perfectly.
The dramatic title for this book cracks me up! But don't let that put you off - this is a fun, quick read, with appealing characters. I like that the heroine calls the hero on his hypocrisy when necessary and that she's working hard to make a new life for herself. All of the above makes her very likeable.
Ok, I'll out myself first and say Kim's a mate of mine and we write for the same Riva line... But that said, I don't read a lot of Riva books because it tends to dent my morale and boy was this book no exception. Kim's writing is always so beautifully accomplished, she has a really fresh fun flirty single title style which always makes me feel I'm getting a lot of bang for my buck. But the premise for this story in particular intrigued me. I mean, the political background of the Marshall family would normally have been a real turn off for me, but Kim weaved it so beautifully into her hero Ethan's conflict that it gave the story a richness and complexity I wasn't expecting. And then we have the risks she took with her heroine Lily. I've written a few bad boy heroes with criminal pasts and they're hard to write, and even harder to make relatable. But a bad girl heroine!! Kimberly Lang has serious cojones and the risks she took were absolutely worth it. I found Lily a wonderfully complex and moving character and I was totally behind her when it seemed that no matter how much she fought to overcome her past it might destroy her future anyway.
I also loved the interaction between Lily and Ethan, the cute, quirky and also very sexy dialogue exchanges... And I even liked the horses! And I am so not a horsey person.
In a nutshell, this is a rich, textured and compellingly written love story that takes risks with its characters and then pulls them off. But don't take my word for it, check it out yourself. Can't wait for the second part of the Marshall trilogy, The Power and the Glory, which is Ethan's brother Brady's story. It's gonna be my Christmas treat!
I really liked this book. It was an easy, fast read. Lily's character was real and I loved how Ethan was rich, but so not full of himself. The story had a happy ending that wasn't cheesy. Perfectly done. I also liked the cover picture. Sometimes, on romances, the people in the picture look annoying. Not so here. They picked the perfect two for the cover image. They really seem to go with the characters.
Okay, now for a little game I like to play. After reading a book, I enjoy coming up with actors and actresses that I feel could portray the main characters if the book was turned into a movie.
For Ethan Marshall: Jonathan LaPaglia or Jason Bateman For Lily Black: Courtney Cox-Arquette, Jennifer Aniston or Sandra Bullock
I think Lily's character should really be portrayed by younger actresses but I can't seem to think of the "perfect" fit.
Just for the heck of it: Senator Douglas Marshall: Michael Douglas
Have not read anything by Kimberly Lang until now and this on the recommendation by Heidi Rice. Fab recommendation - loved every minute of the book, the characters, the dialogue and the passion that surrounds the Marshalls and in this case middle son Ethan and his fling with stable girl Lily - a young woman with a past she is desperately trying to run from. Very emotional - do yourself a favour and read it soon. Now on to Brady's story.
