Ellie, Evan and Jimmy have always been best friends. They work together, play together, support each other and...accidentally eavesdrop on each other, doing some very dirty things. When Ellie hears what Evan and Jimmy have been doing behind her back—watching smutty movies that feature women who look just like her—she doesn't know whether to be bemused or offended. Or maybe just hugely turned on.And that's not even getting into the secret crush Jimmy seems to have on Evan...or the plans he has for the three of them, now that everything's out in the open...
Charlotte Stein is the RT and DABWAHA nominated author of over fifty short stories, novellas and novels. Ellie, Evan and Jimmy are best friends but what Ellie didn’t know was that the two guys have been watching movies featuring women who look like her. And Jimmy also has a crush on Evan too…
The opening of this story features Ellie eavesdropping on her friends. Evan and Jimmy are watching a movie, thinking about Ellie and masturbating while they do so. This particular scene went on a bit long for my liking because I would have preferred the three of them to interact sooner. However, when Ellie does confront them with what she’s overhead them saying and doing, things do heat up.
I felt this long stretch of the three not being together and this being such a short story that it didn’t allow me to really connect with the characters like I’d hoped. I did like other aspects of this story however, like authentic dialogue, good pacing, and the description of the setting.
There’s also an added bonus to this story where the author reveals that Jimmy and Evan might get together too. I think this is a fun read if you’re looking for a different kind of ménage story.
I'm not sure about that ending... This book has some of the elements that I love in Make Me, Doubled, and, to a certain extent, Telling Tales and Control, but its conclusion is a little too unresolved (for my taste). Maybe it's because I'm primarily a romance reader, but -- if there's even a hint of a relationship, romance, or whatnot -- I really want to believe that it's going somewhere for (all of) the characters involved in that relationship, romance, or whatnot.
It was okay... kind of lacking in plot... but a quickie is always better than nothing at all. Thank goodness I did not buy this book, it was a loaner from the library.
Every review I write for a Charlotte Stein book says the same thing…. No one writes shy damaged heroes like Charlotte Stein! Here is another one I love! This is the ultimate “bursted touching himself” story. I mean… really busted. Really embarrassing. And the perfect female reaction.
This loving threesome also contains the blossom of new love. I loved it all. Loved the sex but better… I love how she writes these damaged men and the women who want them. I am quickly jumping to the next short story and I sure I will love it too!
I have such a writer!crush on Charlotte Stein at the moment but this one I found faintly troubling.
I don't think it was particularly well developed, like it could have been so much more than it was. Perhaps this was the story that gave rise to the blistering wonderfulness that is Make Me. Certainly it reads like a sort of prototype for that. I didn't feel like we got much of an insight into any of the characters and frankly Jimmy's eventual result disturbed me too much to like the story.
Admittedly such a menage situation could be sinister and here it just seemed clumsily handled rather than the skill I'm used to seeing from Charlotte Stein as a writer who puts the motivation and the contradiction and the confusion right on the page and works through them all with such great heart and humour. There was some of that here, yes, but nowhere as deep or as thorough as it could have and should have been.
Makes me glad I decided to keep Make Me on my ereader even though I read it like four stories ago. That and Power Play will never be off my ereader, I think.
Somewhere between 3-1/2 and 4, but closer to 4. Ms. Stein does such a great job with awkward boys. And in this one, I wouldn't say the girl was full of confidence either. I think Ellie and Evan would have eventually gotten together on their own, but Jimmy was a really good "director" and instigator. I must say I was maybe a *little* let down that Evan and Jimmy didn't go a bit further. I felt a little bad for Jimmy at the end. But going any further probably really would have ruined the friendship Evan and Jimmy had because I don't think Evan was really ready for any of that.
Anyway, a really cute, sexy, friends-to-lovers story. With one awkward boy. :-) He was so cute!
Not my favorite Charlotte Stein book but I still liked it. Honestly, I would've been happy if Jimmy hadn't been part of the story at all. I liked the interactions with Ellie and Evan the most. Jimmy just annoyed me throughout the story. Also, I would've liked more back story but since this is a novella, I was okay with the fast pacing of the plot. The ending is wrapped up very quickly and easily, but it's not unbelievable. I would probably read this book again.
Just ... hallmark Charlotte Stein. Super cute, *awkward as hell,* adorable (yes I realize that's the same thing as cute), and HOT. It's basically more erotica than romance but just so sweet and nice - just don't expect a ton of relationship development etc.
C+ [wavered between 3 and 4 stars - and this book made me happy, so ... 4]
This was a very quick short story that contained very sexy elements, and hopes for a HEA with all of the characters. While I loved the thought of all three falling in love, the ending left me a little wanting. It was a sweet and hot read!!
Stain always captures an overall emotions within her books - this one really clamps down on 'feeling awkward' :D But it's all good in the end, all good.
