Enjoyable armchair-travels along famous (as well as a few somewhat obscure) European train lines
Get inspired – or relive – some of the great train journeys the continent has to offer. The 50 routes laid out across hundreds of pages makes this a volume to both enjoy - and return to.
There’s a lifetime of journeys to be had.
From journeys that can be done in a day, including The Jacobite, a mere 2 hours (connecting Fort William to Mallaig) to the Glacier Express which takes you from St Moritz to Zermatt in just under 8 hours.
And then there are elaborate routes spanning days, weeks, and potentially months, depending on how long you stop along the way. Think El Transcantábrico Gran Lujo in Northern Spain which can be done in 8 days or the classic Grand Tour (London > Paris > Firenze > Roma > Venezia > Wien > Budapest > Praha > Berlin > Amsterdam). And as you would expect, the Orient Express is also in there … and many many more. Not to mention useful maps, tips, tricks - and links to follow-on reading and other resources.
I think the authors tried to be too ambitious and didn't provide the necessary details to make the train journeys as interesting as they seemed to be. And Oscar Wilde is an Irish writer not an English one and Edith Piaf is not a classical singer more of a popular singer of French songs.
