The Big Books

The Big Book of Pussy

Rate this book

The body part series wraps up with the origin of us all

First, The Big Book of Breasts, then The Big Penis Book, The Big Book of Legs, and the weighty Big Butt Book. What could follow but an in-depth exploration of the female pudendum, that coveted orifice man spends nine months trying to escape, and a lifetime attempting to reenter? The Big Book of Pussy, not to be confused with a book of big pussy, closes out this popular series with an offering sure to be as controversial as it is popular. As in previous volumes, editor Dian Hanson delves into the historical significance of this humble os, to show how the yoni has been coveted, feared, reviled, and worshipped by civilizations worldwide, from New Guinea to old Ireland. The text is supported by playful photographs of women exposing their vulvas, from 1900 to the present day. Because depiction of this body part has long been wrapped in unwarranted shame, The Big Book of Pussy reframes the subject, featuring models who expose their most private part enthusiastically, happily, with smiles spread wide as… well, you get the picture. And with 400+ photos the point is made emphatically, in images both naturally furry and stylishly groomed.

Included are interviews with the auteur known as Pussyman, the ex-cop who turned masturbation into millions with a toy called the Fleshlight,  Vanessa del Rio, squirter Flower Tucci, vaginal performance artist Mouse, and the singular Buck Angel. Contemporary photographers Terry Richardson, Richard Kern, Ralph Gibson, Jan Saudek, Guido Argentini, Ed Fox and others share their favorite pussy photos, so that by page 372 even the shiest reader will be calling, “Here, kitty, kitty!”

Is disappointingly pornographic as opposed to artistic or nuanced. Many of the pictures are of “unknown” women, some as recent as the ‘00s, including not only images of vulvas but also include their faces. I find it hard to believe that a little bit of research wouldn’t have enlightened the editor to the identity of these women and I find it neglectful and exploitative that the labor and bodies of sex workers is being misattributed, and if “unknown”, certainly not paid. I’m not impressed by a compilation of exploitative images of non-consenting women. Beyond that, it is unrepresentative of the many ways that vulvas can be and who they can be owned by. With no clear message, no boundaries really pushed, and no due diligence, it is clearly more of a gag gift than anything of substance.

Utterly fascinating. History seen through the lens of ..y'know..
This book will induce nervous laughter to anybody you show it to. Give them time along with it, and they'll learn something new and intriguing.

Who can tell me that I was reading a book kind'a. And if you think this is a book full of pussies, you're not wrong. But, there are much more in it. The geniality of photographers, the history of that kind of photography and of course the texts. The strongest part of this book! The openness of so different people (men and women) to this cruel world. And the empathy of the author to each of them. There are so different (and sometimes strange) people around us, but never forget they're the same community as we're. Never ignore this fact! And open your eyes as Guano Apes sings!

Absolutely loved it. Being lost for those few hours in an inverted taco paradise was a whole lot of fun.

quite a cool book with juicy pictures. be aware, however, that it is NOT a full history of the concept of pussy in culture (although it contains bits of that) AND that, even though the book is quite large, it is written in 4 different languages. So you'll only get to read 1/4 of it (unless you are practising languages, in that case, this would be the best book ever).

First, let me say that I love big books with pictures! And, I love vagina's so naturally I loved the book...beyond the pictures which are entertaing, there's plenty of sarcasm and humor. And, why shouldn't we laugh about our privates?

It is a well written modern history of man's obsession with the genitals he'll never have. Or, as the introduction says it so well:
"...an in-depth exploration of the female pudendum, that coveted orifice man spends nine months trying to escape, and a lifetime attempting to reenter?"

Like a shower with a friend, it's good clean fun...

"I grew up thinking my pussy was both a golden treasure all men wanted and a nasty dirty thing; the boys, it seems, got a similar message."

Lühike sissevaade aktifoto ajaloosse (valdavalt kuni 1970ndateni, mõned ükskikud kaasaegsed pildid illustreerimaks eessõnas kirjeldatud (pornotööstuse)trende) fookusega vulval. Sissejuhatuseks on lühike, kuid hästi kirjutatud essee. Ilmne, et suurem osa raamatust on täis alastust.

Basically a history of female nude photography focused on the vulva. Mostly vintage photograph plates with some more modern examples. Good high quality images, short but well written essay.
This obviously includes full nudity, with a soft core genital focus.

A fantastic "read!" (Except for the last few pages, which were completely disgusting.)

Revisión gráfica de la vagina como fetiche cultural y efigie sexual, donde la generosa galería fotográfica no hace sino confirmar el esmerado ensayo de la Hanson.

I strongly recommend reading this book at the same time as the book "The Vagina Bible" by Jen Gunter
