Colin Henry Wilson was born and raised in Leicester, England, U.K. He left school at 16, worked in factories and various occupations, and read in his spare time. When Wilson was 24, Gollancz published The Outsider (1956) which examines the role of the social 'outsider' in seminal works of various key literary and cultural figures. These include Albert Camus, Jean-Paul Sartre, Ernest Hemingway, Hermann Hesse, Fyodor Dostoyevsky, William James, T. E. Lawrence, Vaslav Nijinsky and Vincent Van Gogh and Wilson discusses his perception of Social alienation in their work. The book was a best seller and helped popularize existentialism in Britain. Wilson's works after The Outsider focused on positive aspects of human psychology, such as peak experiences and the narrowness of consciousness. He admired the humanistic psychologist Abraham Maslow and corresponded with him. Wilson wrote The War Against Sleep: The Philosophy of Gurdjieff on the life, work and philosophy of G. I. Gurdjieff and an accessible introduction to the Greek-Armenian mystic in 1980. He argues throughout his work that the existentialist focus on defeat or nausea is only a partial representation of reality and that there is no particular reason for accepting it. Wilson views normal, everyday consciousness buffeted by the moment, as "blinkered" and argues that it should not be accepted as showing us the truth about reality. This blinkering has some evolutionary advantages in that it stops us from being completely immersed in wonder, or in the huge stream of events, and hence unable to act. However, to live properly we need to access more than this everyday consciousness. Wilson believes that our peak experiences of joy and meaningfulness are as real as our experiences of angst and, since we are more fully alive at these moments, they are more real. These experiences can be cultivated through concentration, paying attention, relaxation and certain types of work.

Burnout!
There’s a dark side of the moon.
And there’s a dark side of Society; a dark side of our friends; and a dark side of the Deep State.
Societal interaction, of course, tells us it’s only one little blip on the screen and it’ll all come out in the wash. Will it really?
When I retired 16 years ago, burnt out, I thought not. Darkness is burnout.
While I worked, I exuded positive feelings - but at home I often exuded Black Night.
In early retirement I became a confirmed Outsider, mainly through my total lack of success in trying to cut my life’s losses.
Carl Jung calls that dark side the Shadow Self, and we all have one.
Hard to believe? Look at all the bad habits among friends, family... and yourself. Burn out shadows us.
We all, left untethered, will eventually irk our best friends. That’s life! And that’s our Shadow.
We can no longer tolerate 24/7 Sunshine. Our moods will show themselves in spite of our best intentions. And if life bites us once, we’re twice shy. We couldn’t make it through a life without rainy days!
Life’s no picnic, but by refusing to rail at the rain that SPOILS it... we MUST learn to smile away the pain. The people who were always there for us in the past are a very good reason to smile.
Do we have a choice?
Wilson uses an excellent metaphor to get us out of our pit. He says to just imagine one of our feared primary school teachers telling us to get our act together - PRONTO! Worked for me.
Life will always gall us, but we have to STAND TALL to make it to the finish line in One Piece - something we ALL pray for.
For we’ve all heard of Alzheimer’s. Push upwards!
By 2010, I was mired in the apathy of my burnout.
Life had bitten away my good intentions without ceasing, so started to SERIOUSLY look at my life objectively. There must be a literary soulmate out there...
I read this, expecting sympathy.
But Colin Wilson WOKE ME UP.
By SHAKING me.
He showed me my self-serving misery as if I clearly saw it peering back at me from my bathroom mirror.

Sure, I know it hurts, he seemed to say, but what of Dostoevsky and all the Other Outsiders who TURNED THEMSELVES AROUND AND MADE A MAN OF THEMSELVES?
The road to recovery is not easy.
In fact, it HURTS LIKE ALL GET-OUT!
But it’s the Only road out of the Slough.
And it’ll get us Right Back into the SUNLIGHT:
Guaranteed.
It healed me from my burnout.
Cause if you can’t take the heat, get out of the hot kitchen of your self-pity.
Just walk away... one small, decisive step at a time.
Push upward!

The Outsider is no more than just an illustrative book.
It sounds somewhat as though while reading the comic strips Colin Wilson keeps wondering if Batman really was a superhero or just a fiction.
In my opinion any great literary hero is an outsider because conformists and philistines are interesting to no one except to themselves.
Any great writer is also an outsider otherwise he would be lost in the crowd and couldn’t observe anything deserving any attention.
And of course any true reader is an outsider as well, all the others are too busy conforming.
An outsider reads books to compare oneself to other outsiders and to commiserate or envy or hate or remain indifferent…
The idea of Zarathustra began as a reaction against Nietzsche’s own soul-sickness; it was his attempt to give body to the idea of great health. Zarathustra was not a Superman; he was only a man who had succeeded in throwing off the sickness that poisons all other men.

RESTITUIRE A DIO IL BIGLIETTO D’INGRESSO
Un caso letterario che per me ha dell’inspiegabile, ma sono ben contento sia accaduto: un saggio letterario di quasi quattrocento pagine che parla della figura dell’outsider sia nelle opere che nella vita di certi artisti (Dostoevskij, Rilke, Hemingway, Sartre, T.S. Eliot, Van Gogh, Nijinskij, Camus, Nietzsche, ecc.) concepito da un ventitreenne in una solitaria sera di natale (1954) passata mangiando pomodori in scatola e bacon fritto:
Quella sera, mi addormentai con un senso di profonda soddisfazione; mi sembrava di aver passato il Natale più bello di tutta la mia vita.
Pubblicato un paio d’anni dopo (nel maggio del 1956) - e intanto Colin Wilson è arrivato alla veneranda età di venticinque anni - prima tiratura andata subito esaurita, successo di critica e pubblico, Wilson finisce sulle prime pagine, inseguito da reporter e fotografi, viene inserito nel gruppo – anzi, considerato uno dei due fondatori, essendo l’altro John Osborne – degli Angry Young Men.
Con quel libro guadagna 20.000 sterline: il che credo che nella Londra degli anni Cinquanta gli potesse consentire di comprare casa e vivere di rendita per qualche anno. Per rendere meglio l’idea con quelli che sono seguiti (autore molto prolifico, ha spaziato nei più diversi generi), tranne un caso, non è mai andato oltre le mille sterline.
E quindi, un natale solitario accende la scintilla per il suo debutto da scrittore. Dopo aver passato un’estate a dormire all’aperto in sacco a pelo causa mancanza di fondi. Salvato solo dalla sala lettura del British Museum dove passava al caldo leggendo e studiando tutte le ore che poteva di ogni singolo giorno.
Occupandosi di outsider, categoria nella quale si includeva – via l’esistenzialismo – divenne dall’oggi al domani una celebrità per entrare ben accolto nel circolo della gente di successo.
Wilson esplora le biografie interiori dei suoi “eroi” più che le loro vite materiali: e infatti, tra questi suoi “eroi” ci sono diversi personaggi letterari, oltre che i creatori.
Chi è l’outsider? No, non è una marca di profumo, non è l’uomo che non deve mai chiedere scusa. A quell’epoca in italiano la parola era pressoché sconosciuta, l’edizione italiana fu intitolata “Lo straniero”.
Outsider per Colin Wilson sono i grandi irregolari vissuti tra Otto e Novecento, eroi estremi, artisti e le loro creature - vedi Dostoevskij e il suo Raskòlnikov o Rilke e il suo Malte Laurids Brigge o Hemingway e il suo Frederic Harry – gente capace di vedere troppo e troppo lontano, che perlopiù finisce schiantata (suicida, pazza, morti premature) nel terribile conflitto tra il singolo e la società.
L’outsider è l’unico a sapere di essere malato in una società che ignora di esserlo. L’outsider è un visionario incompreso, che odia la società (e, aggiungerei, se non odia abbastanza anche se stesso, è col proprio sé in guerra perenne), sceglie di vivere ai margini, controcorrente, e per superare il proprio senso di inadeguatezza nei casi più estremi ricorre a metodi estremi.
Visto che Nietzsche è nel numero, direi che l’outsider è colui che si sporge sul baratro, lo riconosce, ma non riesce a sottrarsene, ne finisce risucchiato.
La loro dannazione consiste nello stare a metà strada tra gli uomini ordinari e i veri eletti: abbastanza sensibili da rendersi conto che la vita non è ciò che appare, ma purtroppo per loro non toccati dalla grazia dei santi, o dall’illuminazione buddhista. Non sono dei dormienti, ma neppure dei completi risvegliati. È per questo che di solito la società li fa a pezzi.
Eccezione alla regola, Dostoevskij e la sua finale mirabile sintesi (ma non nel senso del numero di pagine!) de I fratelli Karamazov ed Eliot con i Quattro quartetti
Bartleby ha finalmente trovato compagnia!

ماتت أمي اليوم أو أمس , لستُ متأكداً "
هذه نغمة اللامنتمي الذي يلتفت إليهم ولسون اللامنتمى ,الإنسان الذي يدرك ماتنهض عليه الحياة الإنسانية من أساس واهٍ والذي يشعر بأن الاضطراب والفوضوية هما أعمق تجذراً من النظام الذي يؤمن به قومه .
يتطرق لأمثله على اللامنتمين في الأدب الحديث , كبطل قصه باربوس في الجحيم الذي لجأ الى غرفته في الفندق ليغلق بابها ويعيش ليرقب الآخرين من ثقب الحائط , كما يقول ولسون بأنه ينظر أكثر وأعمق مما يجب . وهو لايرى إلا الفوضى .
كما يتبع كولن ولسون طبيعة اللامنتمي خلال قصة كامو" الغريب" وأعمال ارنست همنغواي الأولى وبطريقة اشد طرافة في مسرحية الحياة السرية ليتعمق بها الى بحث اللامنتمي الرومانسي في فصل كامل .
يؤمن ولسون بأن الجو الذي يتميز به عالم اللامنتمي المعاصر جو كريه جداً ,وهم لا يرفضون الحياة فحسب بل يُعادونها, فعالمهم مجرد من القيّم .
هو عالم أشخاص بالغين والفرق بين البالغين وعالم الأطفال هو أحد الفروق الرئيسية بين عالم القرن العشرين وعالم القرن التاسع عشر .
حيث كان لامنتمي القرن التاسع عشر طفلاً لاينتظر منه أن يكون نهيلسايا متشائماً في الوقت الذي كان فيه الفلاسفة يشبهون مربي البقر - الكاوبويز- حين يتنافسون في لعبة من ألعابهم ولم يستطيع لامنتمي القرن التاسع عشر أن يعتقد بأن الخطأ كامن في الطبيعة الإنسانية لأن الفلسفة الغالبة على ذلك العصر كانت تقول بأن الكمال الإنساني شيء يمكن أن يتحقق .
ولهذا فقد ظن ان الخطأ يكمن فيه هو .
اما لامنتمي الرومانسي مثل تيك وهولدرلن ورامبو ومالارميه وغيرهم - مشكلتهم هي في جوهرها مشكلة حية , ولهذا فان ولسن يعود من الأدب الى الحياة نفسها فيعتبر أنهم لامنتمين يتميز كل واحد منهم بمميزات خاصة يتنافس بها الآخرون في لاانتمائيته ميزات في العقلية والشعور والجسد .
يربط ولسون بين اللامنتي وبين الرغبة في الحرية - ليست الحرية السياسية طبعاً وإنما الحرية بمعناها العميق .
يريد المنتمي أن يكون حراً وهو يرى صحيح العقل ليس حراً , ولقد وجد نيتشه الذي يتناوله ولسن بالبحث أيضا حلاً في إخباره العالم بأن جميع الناس يجب أن يكونوا لامنتمين أما لامنتمو تولستوي فقد هربوا من انفسهم بتمسكهم بإنكار الذات باعتبار انه جوهر المسيحية .
وغيرها من التحليل العميق لأعمال بدوستويفسكي الذي تمهد كما يرى لتطورات جديدة .
يرى اللامنتمي ان الدين لا يمكن ان يكون جواباً على مشكلته وعليه فقد يعود كما فعل جورج فوكس ليشّهر بفساد العالم وضلاله أو أنه يجد الجواب في اعتقاد بليك بان البشر جميعاً يجب أن يتمتعوا بقابلية التخيل .
في الحقيقة الكتاب مادة غنية وثرية وسجل ممتلئ بالأمراض الروحية التى يعانيها البشر في منتصف القرن العشرين والملفت أيضا في ذلك بأن كولن ولسون مؤلف هذا الكتاب وكان في عمر الرابعة والعشرين من عمره !! .

I read this book twice before I was 20 years old, and I think that might be the best time to read it. It turned me on to a lot of other writers and historical figures I might never have sought out on my own, and the experience he talks about throughout the book is something that probably freaks out a lot of people, usually young adults, when it happens to them, which isn't often at all, but when it does, it is such a relief to know you're not alone, and a lot of people much more intelligent, insightful, and creative than we'll ever be wrote some really great things about it, including Colin Wilson himself, who never seemed able to come up with another book as good as this one. Though the space vampires movie was awesome!
Update 12 August 2013: I just finished this book for the fourth time, I think, I read it a couple times when I was a teenager, once again in my twenties, and now once again in my mid thirties, and I still think it's a super amazing book. I actually don't agree with it now nearly as much as I did when I was younger, and I can sense more of Colin Wilson's personality seeping through the text than I did in the past, but it's still one of the best books ever written for what it's trying to do, and I'd still recommend it to everyone who ever just, you know, sometimes looks at a tree and suddenly gets terrified by the tree's existence. Man, you are not alone.

عن النفس الحائرة نتحدث، عن الدماغ الذي يعاني من قطعة زائدة – أو ربما ناقصة – تمنع برمجته مثل بقية أفراد المجتمع. لسان لا يكف عن طرح الأسئلة، عينان لا تكفان عن التأمل. هذا اللامنتمي ليس فردًا من أفراد القطيع، ولكنه قد يكون أتعس منهم، هذا هو قدره، فربما تكون أول وسيلة من وسائل الراحة هي التوقف عن طرح الأسئلة.
يشترك اللامنتمون ببعض صفات مثل البحث الدائم عن الحقيقة والقلق الوجودي المزمن وتغيير المفاهيم بشكل جذري في مراحل عمرية مختلفة. غير أنهم يتمايزون في التعاطي مع حيرتهم فالبعض يبادر بالفعل وإن كان عنيفًا والبعض الآخر يغرق في التأمل، يُلحد عدد منهم فيما يعود سواه إلى حضن الدين. هذا يسعى لإنقاذ نفسه وغيره والثاني يكتفي باحتقاره نفسه واحتقار الحياة. وفي النهاية قد لا يفلح هذا ولا ذاك بإخماد الدوامة التي توشك أن تبتلعه.
كان هذا الكتاب هو أقدم كتاب غير مقروء في مكتبتي، أجلّت قراءتها خوفًا من أن يكشف أحداث أعمال أدبية لم أقرأها بعد، كما أنني كنت اتصفحه أحيانًا فألمح به بعض الصعوبة. طال تأجيل هذا الكتاب الذي أحدث ضجة في عصره ورفع كاتبه العشريني إلى مصاف مشاهير الفكر. يقول المثل اليمني: الفرار سنة واللقاء يوم، أي أنه مهما طال التهرب فلا محالة من المواجهة، وقد كانت. نجوت من فخ كشف أحداث الروايات التي لم أطلع عليها، لكنني لم أستطع تفادي فخ الصعوبة.

ليس الكتاب خفيفًا، بل لمست فيه عمقًا فلسفيًا وأدبيًا لا يستهان به. لذا لن تكون قراءته بالأمر اليسير القارئ الذي لا يمتلك خلفية فلسفية جيدة، مثل كاتب هذه المراجعة. توقعت كتابًا أكثر متعًا وأكثر قابلية للقراءة. شعرت أن تنظيم فصول الكتاب لا يستند إلى ترتيب منطقي معيّن، ولم أشعر بأن النص ساعدني على الخروج باستنتاجات معينة، بل وجدتها إطارات فكرية وفلسفية معينة تم وضع الشخصيات فيها. الفكرة رائعة، والمجهود عظيم ولكن النتيجة –بالنسبة لي- لم تكن بالمستوى المتوقع. صحيح أن الجانب المتعلق بتفاصيل حياة تلك الشخصيات كان شيقًا، لكن ذلك الجزء من العمل يسهل انتاجه واستقاؤه من مراجع أخرى قد تكون أكثر توسعًا وإمتاعًا.
أجد نفسي "لامنتمٍ" إلى رابطة المحتفين بهذا الكتاب، وإن كنت بالطبع أحتفي برأيهم وأفكارهم.

كولن ولسون كتب هذا الكتاب في منتصف خمسينيات القرن الماضي وهو في الخامسة والعشرين من عمره ولعل لهذا الامر هو امتياز خاص كون أنه فند الفكر الاضطرابي والعزلة لشعراء وفلاسفة شهد لهم التاريخ بانهم الأعظم وهو في هذا السن ... الكتاب يتقصى حالة اللانتماء لدى هذه الفئة منهم مروراُ بفكر نيتشة الاستثنائي ورقص بنجنسكي الخارق مبرراً رسومات فان كوخ الخالدة وأشخاص ديستويفسكي المتسائلة والتي هي رافضة لفكر والنظام النمطي في المجتمع تجمعهم كلهم فكرة ان جوهر الدين هو الحرية التي تنبع من داخل الذات (كل حسب ما تمليه عليه ذاته) ...فاللامنتمي عندما يرتفع الى مستويات عالية من التفكير يصبح على هؤلاء الذين خصهم الكاتب صعوبة فهم الأشياء النمطية التافهة لذا نجد أن نهاياتهم تؤول الى نهايات دراماتيكية مؤلمة

أعتبره واحدا من أجمل الكتب التي قرأتها

كتاب جميل يعالج في تسعة فصول موضوع نفسية الإنسان اللا منتمي لحزب أو عقيدة .. متطرقا في ذلك لآثار أفكار دستويفسكي وفان جوخ وسارتر والعديد من المشاهير ..
في الكتاب فصول مميزة كفصل اللا منتمي كإنسان يرى رؤى ..
يقارن بين لا منتمي القرن التاسع عشر ولا منتمي القرن العشرين ..
لغة الكتاب أدبية جميلة وبسيطة برغم أفكاره الوجودية ..
قرأته إليكترونيا من نسخة سيئة للأسف لكنه كتاب يشدّ فعلا ويساعد على إكتشاف شيء من الذات ..
بدون أن أشعر انتقلت للكتاب الأخير كما يبدو لي وهو " ما بعد اللا منتمي " وشدّني أكثر إلا أني الآن توقفت عنه لأقرأها ترتيبا كما يقول الكاتب حتى لا تضيع الفكرة التي يطرحها ..
أنصح به لمن يجد نفسه لا منتميا بتطرف ..

Wilson's first book, The Outsider, prefiguring much of his later serious work, was a best-seller, making him a celebrity in his twenties, a status quickly lost and never regained. It is not, in my opinion, one of his best books, but then none of his books are really very good by any ordinary standards. Wilson is no great scholar, no masterful prose stylist. He has made his living as a popularist in scores of sellable books about hot topics like sex, murder, scandal, aliens and the occult. On the side, he has occasionally written serious books in a serious manner, but few or none have likely obtained many sales much after the success of The Outsider.
Yet I keep coming back to Wilson like a cocaine user chases the dragon, seeking again the first high or even something more.
Wilson has the spirit and conviction of a person who has had a profound mystical experience which transcends expression. To his credit, he sticks to it, working it like a dog a bone. He is never successful, but to others who have had a similar glimpse he is evocative, suggestive and the reading of his more serious works is to their credit as well.
Yet I keep coming back to Wilson like a cocaine user chases the dragon, seeking again the first high or even something more.

هل أنت منتمي أو لامنتمي؟
او ربما الموضوع يبدأ من سؤال ماهو عدم الإنتماء أصلًا؟ ولماذا يصل إليه البعض ؟
ارتبط عدم الإنتماء داخلنا بفكرة الإنتماء إلى الوطن أو لحزب سياسي معين، فاقتصر على الجانب السياسي فقط، ونسينا او ربما تناسينا حقيقة الانتماء التي تتسع لتشمل كل شئ في الحياة .
في كتاب ولسون "اللامنتمي" يقدم بحثًا عن شخصية يعتبرها البعض فريدة، والبعض الأخر يعتبرها مريضة وغير سوية، يتهمها بالجنون، شخصية اللامنتمي التي ستكتشفها من خلال هذا الكتاب وتكتشف ان حولك منهم الكثيرين، بل ربما تجد نفسك بين كلمات ولسن، فهو يضعك أمام نفسك، يبرر لك تصرفاتك الغير مفهومة، غثيانك مما يدور حولك، ولامبالاتك المفرطة، ادراكك لعبثية الحياة، قلقك وحزنك المفرطين، وكيف وصلت إلى كل هذا وهذا هو الجزء الأهم في الكتاب ..
يقوم ولسن في هذا الكتاب ببحث شخصية اللامنتمي في أعمال العديد من الأدباء والفلاسفة، فيقوم بتشريح تلك الشخصيات وما فيها من صفات اللامنتمي كأعمال ديستويفسكي وكافكا ونيتشه ووكامو وغيرهم، ويقارن بعض الشخصيات ببعضها البعض، ولم يقتصر فقط على دراسة تلك الشخصيات في الأعمال الأدبية ولكن تطرق لحياة مؤلفيها وعدم انتمائهم وإلى أي مدى ظهرت في شخصيات رواياتهم، كما قام بدراسة لبعض الشخصيات المشهورة كفان كوخ وبنجنسكي وغيرهم، تلك الشخصيات التي لاقت شهرة عالية وانتهت حياتهم نهايات مأساوية
يجعلنا ولسن نرى من خلال فصول كتابه التسع أن اللامنتمي انواع وأن نهاياتهم مختلفة .. وذلك بعد أن قدمهم لك بالتفصيل وقربك من عالمهم، وكأنه قسمهم لأكثر من قسم، أولئك الذي يصيبهم الغثيان من المجتمع وما يحدث فيه، واولئك الذي وصل عدم انتمائهم لدرجة اللامبالاة الكاملة، وهناك الامنتمي الرومانسي كما اطلق عليه ولسون اولئك الذين يصلون بعدم انتمائهم لطريق مسدود واضطرابات عميقة فتنتهي حياتهم بالانتحار غالبًا، ومنهم من يحاولون التأقلم بعدم انتمائهم فيستطيعون مواصلة الحياة
تعجبني تلك الكتب التي تتناول موضوعًا ما وتقوم بتطبيقه على الأعمال الأدبية وعلى الواقع، ربما ذكرني هذا بكتاب "حيونة الإنسان" لـ ممدوح عدوان، هذا النوع من الكتب تكون فائدته مضاعفة، فالاضافة إلى انه يطبق فكرته ويظهرها فهو أيضًا يقدم لك دليلًا للعديد والعديد من الأعمال الادبية التي تستحق أن تقرأها، والتي ستقرأها بفكر مختلف بعد قراءة تلك الأبحاث وليس مجرد قراءة عابرة
هذا الكتاب من الكتب القيمة جدًا، والتي أجد صعوبة حقيقية في الكتابة عنه او عن محتواه، كتاب لا يقرأ مرة واحده، وقراءته مرة أخرى بعد قراءة نماذج الاعمال التي ذكرها ولسن في كتابه ستفتح أمامك الباب لفهم الكتاب بشكل أكبروأوضح
هذه المراجعة أقل بكثير من محتوى الكتاب وأهميته .. ولكني أرشحه للقراءة وبقوة :)

The Outsider is great. Much of the book are things that any serious reader will say the very not so serious comment of 'duh' to, and there is the sense of 'preaching to the converted' (although there is no preaching here), but that's ok with me since a good portion of my life has been being submersed in subcultures that preach to the converted believing that their words just might be able to transcend the actual audience to an audience that needs to hear the message (for the record I just thought this now at 11:22 AM on Sunday January 20th, 2008, and I wish I had thought it sometime ten years ago to counter a lukewarm review I had received from MRR for the eighth issue of my zine. A review that had accused me of preaching to the converted.). But anyway, this book could only have been produced by an 'outsider' himself. Someone standing on the edges of popular and academic writing, but not entrenched in either camp at all.
The basis for this book is that historically there are people who feel like they don't belong to the world around them. They feel like there should be something more to life. But not just a disdain for 'commoners', but more acutely a problem in themselves in relation to the world around them and how to live in that world. To get at what exactly this problem is Wilson looks at many examples, both literary and biographically to try to pinpoint what exactly the mindset of the outsider is and to discover a common thread between them. He gives a wide array of examples, actually it's an amazing amount of examples he goes into with a fair amount of exposition, especially for a book that runs only 288 pages. He looks at real people like Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, Van Gogh, William Blake, and T.E. Lawrence (to name a few), and sets them alongside literary creations like Dostoesky's major characters, Sartre's man who almost loses his lunch looking at a beer glass, Camus' Arab shooting vessel of emptiness, among other lesser well known (to me at least) examples of fictional outsiders.
For me reading these examples and Wilson's insight's made the book. They also made me hate Wilson at times, since at 22 years old is better read then I am at 33, and that he was able to come up with all of this while I was writing silly rants in punk zines. I'm very envious.
But anyway I'm going all over the place with this review. This book is very interesting material for people who do find themselves in the precious position of 'outsiders' to society. Along with studying examples of different types of these people, Wilson is more interested in seeing what kind of solution there is for the outsider to 'win'. Winning in a situation like this is a tricky concept though, because as the reader soon learns most of the people studied don't win, they don't find a way out of the conflict between the world and themselves. Even literary characters don't find a way out of this problem in successful manners. And why is this? Why can't great novelists who know of the problem, and probably feel like outsiders themselves write their characters to be 'winners'?
This is the basis of the book. And Wilson finds at least the semblance of a solution towards the end of his book, but along the way shows the disaster of living that awaits people with this particular mindset. Nietzsche's insanity. Siddhartha's bad faith escapism. T.E. Lawrence's mental suicide. I'm noticing my character count running out quickly, so I can't go into the solution, but for me at least it was a very interesting one.

If I had read this book ten years ago it wouldn't have meant as much to me as it does now. But anyway I'm going all over the place with this review. This book is very interesting material for people who do find themselves in the precious position of 'outsiders' to society. Along with studying examples of different types of these people, Wilson is more interested in seeing what kind of solution there is for the outsider to 'win'. Winning in a situation like this is a tricky concept though, because as the reader soon learns most of the people studied don't win, they don't find a way out of the conflict between the world and themselves. Even literary characters don't find a way out of this problem in successful manners. And why is this? Why can't great novelists who know of the problem, and probably feel like outsiders themselves write their characters to be 'winners'?
This is the basis of the book. And Wilson finds at least the semblance of a solution towards the end of his book, but along the way shows the disaster of living that awaits people with this particular mindset. Nietzsche's insanity. Siddhartha's bad faith escapism. T.E. Lawrence's mental suicide. I'm noticing my character count running out quickly, so I can't go into the solution, but for me at least it was a very interesting one.
This is one of those books that personally I felt was written for me, and then placed out there to be found at the right time. If I had read this book ten years ago it wouldn't have meant as much to me as it does now. I don't think it's for everyone though, and I'm not sure what someone would think of this book who the book isn't for, they would probably find it tedious and maybe vaguely interesting, but see nothing special.

There aren't too many books that can change your life. This is one of the few that can.
Coin Wilson wrote this work while sleeping rough in London, and upon its publication it became a major best seller, giving the author overnight fame. Wilson (for some unfathomed reason) became linked with the literary movement called "The Angry Young Men", and though the critics' love-affair with him soon cooled, he went on to develop his philosophy of "New Existentialism", with its core premise that the next stage of human evolution must consist of the development of the mind through "peak experiences" when one gains a "birds eye view" of life, and can overcome the nagging trivialities of everyday life enough to perceive the greater truth of existence.
An "Outsider" in Wilson's definition is a person who lives on the mental edge of existence, more concerned with truth than trivialities, seeking the existential vision that pushes creative boundaries. Wilson develops his premise by case studies of famous individuals who meet this definition, including Frederick Nietzsche, Bernard Shaw, Franz Kafka, Vincent Van Gogh, Albert Camus and William Blake.
Now, this might not sound precisely like enjoyable holiday reading, but once you open this book and begin to grasp its central idea, I defy you not to be hooked! Wilson takes your mind to new limits, demolishing mental walls as if they did not exist, in such a way that you can never look at mundane existence in quite the same way again.
Wilson went on to write a number of other books in what has since been called "The Outsider" cycle, each of which deals in detail of one aspect of what it means to be an "outsider". This is where it all began. It certainly should be compulsory reading in schools - and might even be the work that brings mankind back from the brink.

أستعرض "ولسون" عبر فصول الكتاب التسعة. أنواع عدة من (اللامنتمي) تتباين بينهم المفاهيم والأهداف والسمات والنهايات، بتباين المجتمعات والمراحل العمرية. إن لامنتم "ولسون" لا يبدأ من سؤال من أين هذا الكون؟ بل من سؤال من أنا؟ وما الغاية من وجودي؟ وما الذي أستطيع تحقيقه؟ وتختلف رحلة وأجوبة ونهاية كل فرد عن الآخر. فالبعض يصيبهم الغثيان من المجتمع وما يحدث فيه ويصلون إلى اللامبالاة الكاملة. والبعض يصلون إلى طرق مسدودة واضطرابات عميقة، وتنتهي حياتهم بالجنون أو الانتحار. وآخرين يحاولون رغم كل شيء التأقلم مع عدم انتمائهم. اقترح "ولسن" التصوف والتأمل والدين - وهو هنا لا يقصد دين بعينه- كحل من أجل البحث والعثور على حقيقة الذات. المهم هو أن يتوقف اللامنتمي عن كونه لامنتميًا.
الكتاب:وجدته ممتعًا في قرأته رغم صعوبته ودسامة مادته الفلسفية. يعيبه طول فصوله وسوء ترتيبه. إلا أن ما يميزه بعد تحليلات "ولسون" العميقة والموفقة (نسبيًا) أنه ثمرة قراءاته الشخصية لا عن دراسة أكاديمية. الكتاب جيد لكنه ليس للقارئ المبتدئ. #تمت😍

يمثل هذا الكتاب دراسة لحالة بشرية تم تسمية من يصاب بها "باللامنتمي"
اللامنتمي هو شخص يبحث عن معنى الحياة ويطرح الأسئلة الكبرى عن هدفها وإمكانيتها والمساحات التي يمكن أن نمارسها بها .لكن في حالة اللامنتمي لم يكن الدين أو الله هو الإجابة عن الأسئلة , غالبا كان الجواب هو إرادة الإنسان وحريته في الضياع في هذا المعنى الغائب الذي أمضى حياته بحثا عنه -إن كنت مؤمنا فسترى أنه الوجه الآخر لعملة الدين التي تنطلق من فكرة أن الإنسان حر يعبد ربّاً اختاره , فتستعد في النهاية أن قصة فطرة الإنسان الأولى صحيحة - .
اللامنتمي يمارس لاانتمائه بحالات ثلاث عقلية\جسدية \عاطفية , أفضل ما قدمه لي هذا الكتاب أنه عرفني على مساحات اللاانتماء التي مازلت أجول بها وأبحث عن إجابة لأسئلتها.

This was my third attempt at trying to read this. Wilson's ideas seem to be all over the place and I can't keep up. Every now and again he says something really interesting and poignant but then dwindles into incoherence. So I'm giving up as i aint the type of dick to rummage through heaps of shit in order to find a gem that is the size of my ballz.

A century or so after the Industrial Revolution started, Western societies set into a pattern where the masses of people appeared to be doing little more than working, sleeping, eating, and never fully developing as human beings. In response, those who were unhappy with this arrangement became more individualistic and socially isolated. Colin Wilson wrote The Outsider to address this situation. While this somewhat influential work of non-fiction begins with a departure into an interesting territory, it also never arrives at any kind of useful destination.
A large portion of The Outsider is literary analysis. Wilson delves into the works of Sartre, Camus, Hesse, Nietzsche, Blake and others. He begins by defining the Outsider as someone who thinks and feels more deeply than other people; this causes them to break away from the herd to purse a life lived to the fullest. He describes this as existentialism and, although he does refer to some existentialist authors, this is not a standard definition of the term. Existentialism was a modern philosophical and literary movement that addressed the idea of humanity in the absence of God; without divine revelation or the dogmatic beliefs to be blindly accepted by religious leaders, truth is determined by empirical experience and meaning is created and chosen rather than received. Wilson does indirectly address these existentialist themes but he does so in a truncated and indirect way that makes this book only tenuously related to existentialism. In any case, The Outsider has problems with definitions throughout the whole book. His concept of the Outsider is incredibly narrow and actually addresses only a small category of alienated people; most of his examples come from fictional characters, not reality, and the details of those he does portray are cherry-picked. Besides, the real outsiders are those who are terminally alone for more mundane reasons like the awkward high school kid who gets bullied because he has zits, the schizophrenic man sitting at the bus stop having conversations with imaginary people, the forty year old guy who commits suicide because he has not lost virginity at the age of 40 or the prisoner who tries to kill himself by bashing his head against the wall after being kept in solitary confinement for four weeks. Colin Wilson is too superior to deal with those kinds of outsiders, though, isn’t he?
His description of Nietzsche’s Zarathustra as being a man who wants to start a new religion could easily be undercut by the fact that Nietzsche was a proponent of moral relativism and linguistic situationism, believing that definitions have fluid, malleable meanings that do not remain fixed but alter according to their circumstances. This idea is in direct contradiction to the concept of religion being about eternal, unchanging values. Nietzsche was an atheist and an anti-metaphysician; Zarathustra was on a quest to experimentally find a better way of life because religion is about controlling masses of people rather than making life a more profound experience. He had not intention of establishing a new religion. But these facts never get in the way of Wilson trying to make his case; he simply ignores the ideas of Nietzsche that contradict what he wants to say and extracts the ideas that he wants. Wilson’s literary analyses are like seeing a garden bush carved into the form of an elephant; the gardener cut away all the pieces he did not want in order to make the bush appear to be something that it is not. Wilson does, however, write some interesting literary criticism but it is sophomoric and inaccurate, kind of like an undergraduate student’s term paper for a course on modern novels.
Wilson has other problems with definitions. He keeps referring to the Will, with a capital W, but never once explains what this will is supposed to be. He does not even use the word in a semantically consistent enough way to make it possible to deduce what he actually means by this. He also keeps referring to the need for religion but his ideas of religion are never defined and what he has to say about it sounds more like mysticism in response to the existential dilemma rather than orthodox concepts of religion as an institution. Without responsibly defining and explaining terms like these it is impossible to clearly understand what it is he advocates for or why it is even important or relevant to our lives.
Getting worse from there, Wilson proclaims that systematic thought like science, logic, and mathematics, are what keep the masses of people enslaved to modernist mediocrity. He blames Hegel especially for this. Quite often people who who condemn such kinds of rationality are people who either do not understand them well enough to use them or people who reject them because they do not support belief in angels, fairies, gods, demons, ghosts and other forms of supernatural junk. Most likely this is true for Wilson, the occultist, who condemns Hegelian thought but can not see that he wrote a book that is a dumbed-down and overly-simplified version of Hegelian ideas. The inherent conflict between the individual and society, as well as the physical, mental, and spiritual conflicts within each individual are all rooted in Hegelian phenomenology; Wilson’s ideas about achieving wholeness through the synthesis of opposing forces is also entirely Hegelian. Wilson was not broad-minded enough to see the Hegelian themes in his own writing.
Worse for Wilson is the fact that he depends on systematic thought all throughout The Outsider. It is a linear narrative the proceeds from point to point along an organizational shceme; that is what is known as systematic thought. Early in the book he mentions the Jewish kabbalah and refers to it a couple times afterwards. Familiarity with the kabbalah makes it clear that the outline of his work is based entirely on this mystical formula which he appropriated from Hebraic tradition. The Outsider begins with the chaos of Sartre’s existentialism, leads into the self-consciousness of Hesse, the mind-spirit-body conflict of T.E. Lawrence, Vincent Van Gogh, and Nijinsky. This hurdle is overcome with Nietzsche confronting the great void, Dostoevsky overcoming it, and William Blake emerging into the spiritual enlightenment that results in a brilliantly colored kaleidoscopic orgasm that hits you like a psychedelic cumshot in the face. This, ladies and gentleman, is the kabbalah in a nutshell and, believe it or not, it is a system of thinking, one that Wilson did not scheme up on his own but borrowed from another culture because he did not really have any ideas of his own. Wilson does not truly reject systematic thinking; he just does not like the systems of thought that do not justify his own spiritual prejudices. Wilson was too amateurish of a thinker to see his own contradictions. Besides, isn’t this just Plato’s “Allegory Of the Cave” dressed up in Modernist clothing?
Colin Wilson’s concept of the Outside is one of a solitary genius who can not be understood because he experiences life too deeply. His solution to the problem of the Outsider is to become a saint, a prophet, a visionary, or the founder of a new religion. Almost all the literary figures, and others, described in this book are, in the end, regarded as failures. Like everything else in this tract, Wilson’s idea of failure is inherently problematic too. Just because some of these authors and artists, some of which were atheists, did not become mystic visionaries does not mean they failed in what they set out to do. It means they failed to do what Colin Wilson thinks they should have done. This is the hubris of a second or third-rate thinker. While condemning these people for failing to become prophets and visionaries, it also has to be pointed out that Wilson states in the last chapter that he does not know how to solve the problem of the Outsider either. So he fails to meet his own goals while criticizing others for failing too.
Colin Wilson was a literary hack, a pseudo-intellectual, and a gullible dupe. After writing The Outsider he went on to write trashy novels about rapists and serial killers, dopey books about UFOs, spiritualism, parapsychology, and other forms of corny occultism. In all, his oeuvre totals over 100 volumes. Do not ever trust a writer who publishes too much; it is a sign of shallow thinking. The Outsider gained some notice because of the slight influence it had on the Beat Generation authors and the hippie movement of the 1960s. It has maintained a cult following over time. Filled with historical inaccuracies and weak reasoning, it possibly will only be remembered as a historical artifact from the middle of the Modernist era, if it gets remembered at all. But it is not popular enough to be overrated and not written well enough to be underrated.

Worse for Wilson is the fact that he depends on systematic thought all throughout The Outsider. It is a linear narrative the proceeds from point to point along an organizational shceme; that is what is known as systematic thought. Early in the book he mentions the Jewish kabbalah and refers to it a couple times afterwards. Familiarity with the kabbalah makes it clear that the outline of his work is based entirely on this mystical formula which he appropriated from Hebraic tradition. The Outsider begins with the chaos of Sartre’s existentialism, leads into the self-consciousness of Hesse, the mind-spirit-body conflict of T.E. Lawrence, Vincent Van Gogh, and Nijinsky. This hurdle is overcome with Nietzsche confronting the great void, Dostoevsky overcoming it, and William Blake emerging into the spiritual enlightenment that results in a brilliantly colored kaleidoscopic orgasm that hits you like a psychedelic cumshot in the face. This, ladies and gentleman, is the kabbalah in a nutshell and, believe it or not, it is a system of thinking, one that Wilson did not scheme up on his own but borrowed from another culture because he did not really have any ideas of his own. Wilson does not truly reject systematic thinking; he just does not like the systems of thought that do not justify his own spiritual prejudices. Wilson was too amateurish of a thinker to see his own contradictions. Besides, isn’t this just Plato’s “Allegory Of the Cave” dressed up in Modernist clothing?
Colin Wilson’s concept of the Outside is one of a solitary genius who can not be understood because he experiences life too deeply. His solution to the problem of the Outsider is to become a saint, a prophet, a visionary, or the founder of a new religion. Almost all the literary figures, and others, described in this book are, in the end, regarded as failures. Like everything else in this tract, Wilson’s idea of failure is inherently problematic too. Just because some of these authors and artists, some of which were atheists, did not become mystic visionaries does not mean they failed in what they set out to do. It means they failed to do what Colin Wilson thinks they should have done. This is the hubris of a second or third-rate thinker. While condemning these people for failing to become prophets and visionaries, it also has to be pointed out that Wilson states in the last chapter that he does not know how to solve the problem of the Outsider either. So he fails to meet his own goals while criticizing others for failing too.
Colin Wilson was a literary hack, a pseudo-intellectual, and a gullible dupe. After writing The Outsider he went on to write trashy novels about rapists and serial killers, dopey books about UFOs, spiritualism, parapsychology, and other forms of corny occultism. In all, his oeuvre totals over 100 volumes. Do not ever trust a writer who publishes too much; it is a sign of shallow thinking. The Outsider gained some notice because of the slight influence it had on the Beat Generation authors and the hippie movement of the 1960s. It has maintained a cult following over time. Filled with historical inaccuracies and weak reasoning, it possibly will only be remembered as a historical artifact from the middle of the Modernist era, if it gets remembered at all. But it is not popular enough to be overrated and not written well enough to be underrated.

اللامنتمي – كولن ولسون
إن هذا الكتاب لهو مثال صريح عن مفهوم القراءة التحليلية في موضوع واحد. وقد نختلف في مدى دقة الموضوع.. هل هو حقاً اللامنتمي ؟ أم هو بحث عن الفلسفة الوجودية خاصة أن ولسون هو أحد مؤسسي الوجودية الحديثة.
بغض النظر عن مدى صحة النتائج التي توصل إليها ولسون في نهاية هذا البحث أو مدى صحة الإستدلالات التي أتى بها.. لكن، يظل هذا الكتاب بحثاً يستحق الإشادة في الفلسفة الوجودية.
من أهم ما يثير الإهتمام في هذا الكتاب هو كونه صادر عن رجل لا أكاديمي.. فقد سبق أن ذكرتُ أن ولسون لم يذهب إلى الكلية أبداً. بل هو شاب حدث له أن كان قارئاً نهماً.. ثم خطر بباله كتابة هذا الكتاب في أحد الليالي كما يفعل أي منا حين يقدم على كتابة مراجعة لأحد الكتب !
إن هذا الكتاب هو أشبه ما يكون بمراجعة ضخمة جامعة لعدة كتب في آن واحد.. وقد شاء الكاتب أن تحمل عاملاً مشتركاً أو بالأحرى أن يُنظر لهذه الكتب من وجهة نظر وجودية.
من الجدير بالذكر أنه يتفق وصف هذه المشكلة الموصوفة في هذا الكتاب والتي أسماها ولسون باللامنتمي بالمشكلة المعروفة في علم النفس والتي تحدث عنها إريك فروم وسماها بـ "الإنفصال" وما هو اللامنتمي إلا طريقة فريدة كرد فعل بشري على هذه المشكلة. كنتُ قد تحدثتُ سابقاً كثيراً عن هذه المشكلة في مراجعات سابقة عن بعض الروايات التي جاء ولسون على ذكرها كالجحيم لباربوس ودوميان لهيسة.. وحتى تلك التي لم تكن في زمان ولسون كقواعد العشق الأربعون.
وما يثير الإهتمام أيضاً في هذا الكتاب أن السيد ولسون يؤكد على ترابط "التصوف" مع الفلسفة كنتيجة نهائية مطروحة كحل للامنتمي. ومن المهم هنا أن نذكر بأنها ليست الحل الوحيد أو ليس بالضرورة الحل الصحيح –إن كان ثمة ما هو شيء كذلك- وهذا شيء موجود كذلك في طرح إريك فروم عند حديثه عن مشكلة الإنفصال حيث طرح فكرة ترابط التصوف مع الفلسفة كنتيجة أو كحل لمشكلة الإنفصال.
ولا بد لي من أن أعلق على بعض التناقضات التي وجدتها في تفسير ولسون حيث أنه يقول بأن الغرور هو سلاح اللامنتمي ضد الجنون. أي أنه طريقة دفاع اللامنتمي كي لا يقع في دوامة الجنون مستدلاً على ذلك بحكاية نجنسكي؛ راقص الباليه الروسي الشهير.. ��الذي اضطر أن يكون عشيقاً لدياكيليف كي يتمكن من أن يعيش ! ويمكننا القول عن نجنسكي أنه رجل رومانسي "كسير" اضطر لتسليم جسده لدياكيليف حتى يستمر في الحياة ثم هرب منه وتزوج في نهاية الأمر من راقصة مماثلة. وما أن سمع دياكيليف بالأمر حتى أبرق إليه أنه مفصول من فرقته. ويمكننا التعليق هنا بناءً على المعطيات التي قدمها ولسون أن نجنسكي قد ضاق ذرعاً من معاملته كطفل موهوب لا عقل له. وذلك في إشارة لدور الوصاية التي كان دياكيليف يقوم به على نجنسكي والذي حسب وصف ولسون كان يتصرف وكأنه "زوج" نجنسكي. لو كان نجنسكي شاذاً لهرب ليقيم علاقة مع رجل آخر على سبيل المثال. لكنه هرب ليتزوج من فتاة راقصة مثله. ما يهم هنا هو أن النفس الضعيفة لنجنسكي لم تتحمل معضلة اللامنتمي فهربت إلى الدين قبل أن تسقط في الجنون. لكن، نجد في المقابل نيتشة على سبيل المثال.. لم يكن ينقصه الغرور.. لكنه سقط كذلك في دوامة الجنون في نهاية الأمر. ونجد هنا أن الغرور لم ينفع نيتشة في شيء.
لقد شمل ولسون في هذا الكتاب أدباء كباربوس وويلز وشيكسبير وتولستوي ودوستويفسكي وكافكا وهمنغواي وإليوت وغيرهم.. وشمل أيضاً رجلاً كلورانس العرب.. وراقص باليه "نجنسكي" وفلاسفة كنيتشة.. وفناناً كفان غوخ. أي أنه لم يقتصر فقط على الأدباء.. بل تعداهم. وهذا لربما يتفق مع طرح ولسون في كتابه الآخر "الإنسان وقواه الخفية" أن هذه الفئة من الناس –أي الموهوبين- هم الأقدر على توليد الحاسة "س" وقد أشار ولسون في كتابه هذا عن قابلية اللامنتمي لأن يرى "رؤى". وعن نفسي أتساءل: لمَ لا نجد ردة فعل مشابهة لدى من يملك خلفية علمية؛ أقصد لمَ لم يتحدث ولسون عن عالم كيميائي على سبيل المثال.. أو فيزيائي كأينشتاين. هل اللامنتمي هو شيء خاص بالموهوبين في مجالات لا علمية ؟
أتفهم تماماً إستقبال النقاد لهذا الكتاب ودهشتهم بالمحتوى والكاتب. ولربما يكون الكاتب كمثال يحتذى لمحب خالص للعلم دون دراسة أكاديمية. وأتفهم النقد والسخرية التي تعرض لها خاصة على كتابه "الإنسان وقواه الخفية".. وبعض الإستدلالات في كتابه هذا كذلك. وقد تعرضتُ لهذه النقطة في حديثي عن "الإنسان وقواه الخفية".
إن لامنتمي ولسون لا يبدأ من سؤال من أين هذا الكون ؟ إنما من سؤال من أنا ؟ وما الغاية من وجودي ؟ ولكل فرد رحلته لإيجاد جواب وليس بالضرورة أن يستحيل المرء لا منتمياً في تلك الرحلة إنما تستحيل فقط فئة دون غيرها وقدم ولسون تفسيراً من وجهة نظره عن من هم هؤلاء. وقدم كذلك حلولاً مقترحة وهي ببساطة أن تجد حقيقة نفسك. أياً كانت الطريقة؛ الدين، التصوف، أو لربما الإرتداد لدين الفطرة كما كان مع جان جاك روسو. ما يهم هو أن يتوقف اللامنتمي عن كونه لامنتمياً لينتهي إما سعيداً أو قديساً. وكما أشرنا سابقاً هو طرح مشابه لما كان في علم النفس مع مشكلة الإنفصال. الفارق هنا هو كون اللامنتمي هو من فئة معينة فقط من البشر.. بينما قد يعاني أي بشري من الإنفصال.. وعن نفسي أميل أيضاً لترجيح ذلك.
الخلاصة، الكتاب مهم رغم توزيعه السيء وصعوبة طرحه فهو بكل تأكيد ليس بالكتاب السهل في القراءة.. خاصة مع تقسيمه إلى فصول دون عناوين فرعية وحجم كل فصل حوالي 50 – 70 صفحة ! ونحن نتحدث عن فصول مكثفة تتحدث عن ما لا يقل عن 5 كتب. رغم كل ذلك هو كتاب مهم. وأنا سعيد لكوني قد تمكنت من إنهائه.

“The Outsider wants to cease to be an Outsider.”
It's like the most touching words (regarding the outsider subject) I've ever read.
Yes. This book touches my heart really deep.
It describes my very soul, my emotions, and my life perception. It talks about everything one should know and deal with in a life that's really horrible and strange in his eyes.
“The problem of the Outsiders is the unreality of their lives. They suddenly realize they are in a cinema. They ask: Who are we? What are we doing here? ... They are confronted with a terrifying freedom”
It's a very important book that everyone should read. It's on my top list.
And I feel now that I finished it, I MUST read it again a couple of times - at least!
It's one of the books that can change your life entirely.
When I finished it I thought: " It's really cool to be an outsider!"

دراسة رائدة لشخصية "اللا منتمي" حددت الكثير من معالم وسمات ذلك الشخص الذي قد نراه، نعرفه، نسمع عنه - إو قد نكونه أحياناً!- الذي يشعر بالغربة.. بالعزلة.. بالاختلاف.. بالحيرة.. إو ما شئت من أوصاف لمحاولة الفهم، الانتماء، الرغبة في القبول التي يعيشها أغلبنا في فترة أو أخرى من حياته.. أو كلها أحياناً..
يحلل الكاتب هذه الشخصية كما قدمت في كتابات العديد من أعلام الأدب العالمي ويناقش نقاط التوافق والاختلاف أو التناقض في رؤى هؤلاء الكتاب ويلخص السمات المشتركة..
كتاب عميق وأسلوب جاذب وقريب من النفس -في رأيي - ولكن قد يكون رتيباً بعض الشىء لغير المهتم أو لمن يجد صعوبة في فهم الشخصية المقصودة.
يحلل الكاتب هذه الشخصية كما قدمت في كتابات العديد من أعلام الأدب العالمي ويناقش نقاط التوافق والاختلاف أو التناقض في رؤى هؤلاء الكتاب ويلخص السمات المشتركة..

في مقدمة الناشر الانكليزي للطبعة العاشرة من هذا الكتاب ذكر أن هناك نوع من الأشخاص تجتمع فيه سمات معينة يمكن أن يعطي صورة صادقة عن عصره، و بالنسبة لعصرنا اليوم ،هذا الذي يأتي بعد داروين و فرويد و أينشتاين ، "اللامنتمي "هو النوع الذي يعبر عن إنسان هذا العصر .
الكتاب من أوله إلى آخره يمتلأ بالحديث عن صفات "اللامنتمي" الذي جاء كترجمة للمصطلح الانجليزي "the outsider" ،و الذي يعني أيضا "الدخيل" . على أنني إن أمكن لي أن أعطي صورة فنية تلخص حالة اللامنتمي و موقفه من الحياة قبل أن أشرع بتلخيص سماته، لن أجد أفضل من لوحة "الصرخة" لإدفارد ميونش كي تقوم بمهمة ترك المجال لكم بتخمين طبيعة اللامنتمي .
"يرى أكثر من اللازم ،و أعمق من اللازم" من هنا تبدأ مشكلة اللامنتمي، فهو كثير التأمل و كثير الأسئلة. يتسائل:"من أنا؟،ما الحياة؟"، و تمر عليه لحظات يشعر فيها بلاحقيقيته ،و أن الحياة ليست إلا وهما. اللامنتمون يتسمون بالسوداوية،و لا يرفضون الحياة فحسب ؛بل يعاديها الكثير منهم. مشكلة اللامنتمي الرئيسية هي الحرية ،و على هذا فهو لا يقبل قصور إدراكه الإنساني ،و يسعى بكل ما أوتي من السبل كي يصل إلى ذروة إدراكه ،و هو بهذا الهدف يحتقر و يشمئز من عامة الناس الذي يراهم مغرقين في ماديتهم و اهتمامهم بسطحية الحياة .
تمر على اللامنتمي لحظات يشعر فيها بلا حقيقية كل شيء ،كأن ينظر إلى مقعده و يفشل في تمييزه ،"إنه مقعد ،إلا أن الكلمة تبقى على شفتي. إنها ترفض أن تنطلق و تستقر على الشيء. كأن الأشياء قد طلقت من أسمائها". مثل هذه النوبات عبر عنها تولستوي في الكثير من قصصه ،فتباغته فجأة مسألة الحياة و الموت ،فيقول :"لماذا هذه الحياة؟أللموت؟ألأنتحر حالا؟" .
كولن ويلسون، الذي ألف هذا الكتاب و هو في الرابعة و العشرين من عمره ،اتبع في معرض دراسته عن شخصية اللامنتمي،منهج البحث في الأعمال الأدبية التي استعرضت شخصيات تشترك في سمات اللامنتمي ؛مثل أعمال كامو ، همنجواي، ديستوفسكي،تولستوي،هيرمان هسه. إضافة إلى عرض سير بعض الشخصيات الحقيقية التي تنطبق عليها صفات اللامنتمي مثل "فان جوخ "،"فازلاف نجنسكي"،"جورج فوكس"،"لورنس العرب" ،"نيتشه"،" شوبنهاور".
توسع كولن ويلسون في بحثه عن "اللامنتمي"فلم يكتف بتشريح شخصيته ،بل مضى إلى الكشف عما فعل اللامنتمون بتلك الشخصية المضطربة ،و كيف عبروا عنها؛باللغة أم بالفن أم بالجسد .هناك من فشل في إيجاد أجوبة لتساؤلاته و قتل نفسه ك "فان جوخ"، و هناك من سعى للبحث عن طريقة يوسع بها إدراكه فنجح ك"جورج فوكس ". الفصل الأخير من الكتاب استعرض نماذج كيف استطاعت شخصيات أن توسع من إدراكها العقلي.
لا يمكنني أن أقول أنني استمتعت كليا بهذا الكتاب، فقد شعرت ببعض الصفحات ثقيلة علي ،و تسرب الملل إلي في أخرى. على أنني أيضا لا أقول أني لم أجن فائدة منه . يحسب لهذا الكتاب أنه عرفني على سيرة حياة بعض الشخصيات المشهورة،كما أنه شوقني لقراءة بعض الأعمال الأدبية التي استعرضها ،و من خلاله غصت في علم النفس بتحليله العميق للشخصيات ..
*ملاحظة أخيرة : لا تقرأ هذا الكتاب إن كنت مبتدئ في القراءة لئلا تظلم الكتاب، أو يصيبك إحباط من مستوى فهمك ،كما لا تقرأه إن لم تكن تتحلى بصبر القارئ و مثابرته.
الكتاب من أوله إلى آخره يمتلأ بالحديث عن صفات "اللامنتمي" الذي جاء كترجمة للمصطلح الانجليزي "the outsider" ،و الذي يعني أيضا "الدخيل" . على أنني إن أمكن لي أن أعطي صورة فنية تلخص حالة اللامنتمي و موقفه من الحياة قبل أن أشرع بتلخيص سماته، لن أجد أفضل من لوحة "الصرخة" لإدفارد ميونش كي تقوم بمهمة ترك المجال لكم بتخمين طبيعة اللامنتمي .
"يرى أكثر من اللازم ،و أعمق من اللازم" من هنا تبدأ مشكلة اللامنتمي، فهو كثير التأمل و كثير الأسئلة. يتسائل:"من أنا؟،ما الحياة؟"، و تمر عليه لحظات يشعر فيها بلاحقيقيته ،و أن الحياة ليست إلا وهما. اللامنتمون يتسمون بالسوداوية،و لا يرفضون الحياة فحسب ؛بل يعاديها الكثير منهم. مشكلة اللامنتمي الرئيسية هي الحرية ،و على هذا فهو لا يقبل قصور إدراكه الإنساني ،و يسعى بكل ما أوتي من السبل كي يصل إلى ذروة إدراكه ،و هو بهذا الهدف يحتقر و يشمئز من عامة الناس الذي يراهم مغرقين في ماديتهم و اهتمامهم بسطحية الحياة .
تمر على اللامنتمي لحظات يشعر فيها بلا حقيقية كل شيء ،كأن ينظر إلى مقعده و يفشل في تمييزه ،"إنه مقعد ،إلا أن الكلمة تبقى على شفتي. إنها ترفض أن تنطلق و تستقر على الشيء. كأن الأشياء قد طلقت من أسمائها". مثل هذه النوبات عبر عنها تولستوي في الكثير من قصصه ،فتباغته فجأة مسألة الحياة و الموت ،فيقول :"لماذا هذه الحياة؟أللموت؟ألأنتحر حالا؟" .
كولن ويلسون، الذي ألف هذا الكتاب و هو في الرابعة و العشرين من عمره ،اتبع في معرض دراسته عن شخصية اللامنتمي،منهج البحث في الأعمال الأدبية التي استعرضت شخصيات تشترك في سمات اللامنتمي ؛مثل أعمال كامو ، همنجواي، ديستوفسكي،تولستوي،هيرمان هسه. إضافة إلى عرض سير بعض الشخصيات الحقيقية التي تنطبق عليها صفات اللامنتمي مثل "فان جوخ "،"فازلاف نجنسكي"،"جورج فوكس"،"لورنس العرب" ،"نيتشه"،" شوبنهاور".
توسع كولن ويلسون في بحثه عن "اللامنتمي"فلم يكتف بتشريح شخصيته ،بل مضى إلى الكشف عما فعل اللامنتمون بتلك الشخصية المضطربة ،و كيف عبروا عنها؛باللغة أم بالفن أم بالجسد .هناك من فشل في إيجاد أجوبة لتساؤلاته و قتل نفسه ك "فان جوخ"، و هناك من سعى للبحث عن طريقة يوسع بها إدراكه فنجح ك"جورج فوكس ". الفصل الأخير من الكتاب استعرض نماذج كيف استطاعت شخصيات أن توسع من إدراكها العقلي.
لا يمكنني أن أقول أنني استمتعت كليا بهذا الكتاب، فقد شعرت ببعض الصفحات ثقيلة علي ،و تسرب الملل إلي في أخرى. على أنني أيضا لا أقول أني لم أجن فائدة منه . يحسب لهذا الكتاب أنه عرفني على سيرة حياة بعض الشخصيات المشهورة،كما أنه شوقني لقراءة بعض الأعمال الأدبية التي استعرضها ،و من خلاله غصت في علم النفس بتحليله العميق للشخصيات ..
*ملاحظة أخيرة : لا تقرأ هذا الكتاب إن كنت مبتدئ في القراءة لئلا تظلم الكتاب، أو يصيبك إحباط من مستوى فهمك ،كما لا تقرأه إن لم تكن تتحلى بصبر القارئ و مثابرته.

الإستحواذ يبدو العنوان مثيرا هذه الكلمة نادرة الإستخدام كما إنها قد تفتح بوابة الخيال لديك غير أن خيالي فيما يبدو كان جامحا فلم أدرك الرواية ولم تدركني لم يخطر في بالي أبدا أن الرواية سيكون مجالها نفسي ومضمونها هو مرض تعدد الشخصيات !
هذا المرض يصيب من تعرض لإضطرابات في الطفولة أو حوادث أو شيء ما صادم هذه الأمور قد تسبب إنفصام الشخصية إلى شخصيات متعددة مختلفة تماما عن بعضها في طريقة غريبة !
النفس الإنسانية مليئة بأمور مدهشة جدا كيف تتفتت وكيف تنقسم كإنقسام خلايا الأميبيا لكنها تظل في غلاف خلية واحدة
وهذه الرواية على إنها جريمة إلا إنها أقرب للدراسة منها فإن مجريات الرواية الهدف فيما يبدو منها هو شرح هذه الحالات المعقدة والتي لفتت نظر ويلسون ليخرج منها برواية الإستحواذ
القصة عادية نوعا ما ككل قصص الجرائم لكنها تلج عالما غريبا للغاية فأنت قد لا تصدق أن هذا كله ممكن أن يحدث داخل إنسان كنتُ أميل لأحيان كثيرة وأنا أقرأ لأن أصدق أنها أمور متخيلة وأن المريض لديه قدرة هائلة على التمثيل لكي يميل الآخرين إلى جانبه يستعطفهم يستجدي حنان الآخرين لعلي كنت آمل أن يغير ويلسون من مسار الرواية لكي لا تكون مجرد وسيلة لشرح مرض ما
كأن يكون هناك إدعاءا وشوية أكشنات لكن ويلسون بدا ملتزما جدا أقرب لمحاضر
يلقي درسه في إحدى الجامعات
مع ذلك فأن رواية الجرائم لها جمهورها العريض وأعتقد أنها كانت الوسيلة الأكثر قبولا لشرح تعقيدات هذا المرض

كتاب مرهق لكن مهم لفهم وضع اللامنتمي في العالم الحديث ليس فقط أيدولوجيا ولكن نفسيا والكاتب يستحضر نماذج رائعة من الأدب وعالم الرقص والرسم والفلسفة وغيرها ويحلل كيف تعامل كل لامنتم مع إشكالية عدم الانتماء وتحديد ما إذا كان الغرض من الحياة هو حمل الأرض للجنة والصعود أم جلب الجنة للأرض والسقوط وقد وفق الكاتب في معظم اختياراته وإن كان هناك تعصب أكاديمي بغيض لا يمكن إغفاله حيث ركز الكاتب فقط على الغرب ورجال الفكر الغربيين واقتبس مقوله مستفزة تؤكد أن الصين والهند وهما رمزان لبلاد الشرق لن يتمكنا أبداً من بناء أي حضارة حديثة وهو اقتباس خاطئ وبه مغالطة تاريخية لا يمكن أن تغفر حتى المثال الوحيد الذي أحضره في نهاية الكتاب وبصورة مقتضبة جدا كان راما كريشنا وهو يؤكد أن سبب سمو تفكير كريشنا هو محيطه الجغرافي الهادئ كما لو أن أهل الشرق لا عقل لهم ولا قدرة ليقفوا على قدم المساواة مع رجال الفكر الغربي وقد تجاهل أسماء مهمة جدا مثل كونفوشيوس وبوذا في السياق الذي تبناه الكتاب ومن إخفاقات الكتاب الكبيرة عدم تناول كافكا إلا بصورة سطحية ومقتضبة جدا على الرغم من أنه خير من يمثل اللامنتمي في القرن العشرين وفي الوقت الذي ركز فيه على المدرسة الرومانسية في القرن التاسع عشر تغافل مرة أخرى عن ذكر إدجار آلن بو وعالمه اللامنتمي قلباً وقالباً لكن لا أستطيع أن أنكر أني استمتعت فعلا بالأجزاء التي تناولت بالتحليل ديستويفسكي وقد أفسح لها الكاتب المجال بمساحة كبيرة في الكتاب وهو أمر طيب
الكتاب يستحق أربع نجمات لكن الترجمة سيئة جدا مع الأسف وقد أعاقت القراءة مرات ومرات
