This text is designed to introduce undergraduates to the study of social theory, social change and Third World development. The author compares the strengths and weaknesses of the modernization, the dependency and the world system schools of research which have dominated development studies for four decades. This book is the only study to address the research implication of the three development theories in such a comprehensive fashion.
A good book about 3 theories of development. The writer describe frames about the theories and give the examples about theories. Many social scientists gave their analyses in this book.
This is a book for those wanting to know about three major mainstream of developemnt theories: modernization, dependency and world system theories. It is good for beginners.
Read this book for international development studies and still today, 14 years later, refer back to it in my mind. The writing is crystal clear. The way it frames development is fundamental to consider—as certainly not the only way but nevertheless one of the most grounded and obvious. A great place to start becoming aware. I think this book is now hard to get a hold of as it’s older. But if you can, it’s worth it.
This is a book I've wanted all my friends to read so we can sit around and talk about it and feel smart. It's a great primer, if just a tad out of date, for getting a grip on the big systems that dominate how we think about the world, even if we've hadn't thought about them that way before. I think, also, it's a nice resource for lit folks for a different perspective on what ye olde human experience is embedded in.
One of the best books I have ever read! It is a reader on the three major development schools up to day. The books divisions into three chapters helps the mind to organize the ideas clearly. There isn't a biased explaining while learning, which is all I appreciate in this book.
