Joyride Ost

It’s a very predictable story, but if you’re interested in learning German, it’s a great book. I didn’t like the ending and I personally think the author didn’t spend enough time on elaborating the relationship between the two main characters. So I didn’t like the story as much, but it was written in very easy to understand German so if you’re in school and you need to read a German book I’d recommend this one.

Tarik and Jana live in Wessenheim Germany. They're in love with each other, but can't be together because of their religion. Tarik is Muslim, Jana baptist. On a night they both run away because of a fight with their parents. Then they decide to steal a car. Little do they know it belongs to a mafia boss.
It wasn't really my type of book. I had to read it for my German class, but I wouldn't read it in my spare time.

I didnt like the book.
The storyline was unrealistic and 90% of the car scenes were boring it. The Ending was rushed and horrible. The possibility of a gun "accidently" going off and hitting the mafia is basically unexistent. Jana cried because of everything but when she actually shot someone she didnt care and had no remorse. The writing was unintresting and dry.

Plot was pretty basic. Typical teen likes other teen kinda thing. I had to read this for school. Couldn’t enjoy it really. I was confused with what exactly the maffia had to do with 2 teens hitting the road, but that may be because of my lack of German skills.

I read somewhere that this is where I say why I wrote the novel – instead of giving is a raving review myself.

JOYRIDE WEST was my first young adult novel. I never intended to write one. The idea of a couple stealing a car for a joyride ending up with the totally wrong vehicle was originally an adult novel.

But it didn't work out that way, and I carried it around for about 10 years until one day it dawned on me: What if this would happen to two teenagers? What if they tried to escape their parents and their pressure, but end up with a shackled guy in the trunk …

All of a sudden the whole story had a different drive, a different feeling. The next question was: Who are they? And during my research reading young adult novels – which I hadn't seen in 20 years – I found out one thing: The good stuff, the edgy, funny rock 'n roll stories in Germany all had protagonist with no migrant background. If there was a young adult novel with the main character having migrant background it was only a problem chewing story.

So I decided to change that, I would tell the story from the point of view of a young German with Moroccan background: Tarik.
I sat down to write a treatment. This already caught the attention of some film production companies but there was only a lot of talk. So I got tired of them and wrote the novel. In 2008 the manuscript was nominated as best German YA novel debut.

Until then my novels were only published by small editions. Suddenly my life changed. I sold the film rights with me as a playwright even before the novel was picked up by Rowohlt Verlag – where a lot of my heroes are published (Richard Ford, Cormac McCarthy).

What I never envisioned: I read this book in different countries at schools hundreds of times since and it has become a literary staple in a lot of German classes.

My own teachers never saw that coming.
