Boris Vian was a French polymath: writer, poet, musician, singer, translator, critic, actor, inventor and engineer. He is best remembered for novels such as L’Écume des jours and L'Arrache-cœur (translated into English as Froth on the Daydream and Heartsnatcher, respectively). He is also known for highly controversial "criminal" fiction released under the pseudonym Vernon Sullivan and some of his songs (particularly the anti-war Le Déserteur). Vian was also fascinated with jazz: he served as liaison for, among others, Duke Ellington and Miles Davis in Paris, wrote for several French jazz-reviews (Le Jazz Hot, Paris Jazz) and published numerous articles dealing with jazz both in the United States and in France.

well, the book floats around new york city. bars and bistros and pool halls and tenements and back alleys. and dan parker... he's a bad bad man. bangs prostitutes two at a time behind his wife's back, beats up mucho people (particularly black people, he hates black people), hates his wife, hates himself... it's pitch perfect noir.
and then it flips off into rod serling territory. goddammit, when parker's knocking around manhattan looking for a black chick to bang ("a fat, sweaty one"), to test himself, to try and understand the 'feral' attraction and why white wimin just ain't doing it for him no more... well, it's just too much. you see... dan parker is half black. and been passing as white for years. and his long lost brother is gonna 'out' him. not good. dan parker goes batshit. totally fucking crazy. two black chicks at the same time in a seedy steamy harlem bar, thinking about bashing in their heads, thinking about his white body sandwiched between their dark bodies. wild and weird shit. and then the cops are after him... and that ending.

vian had balls bigger than my head. that this comes out of the 40s? from a guy who had never been to new york and who wrote under an alias as a black american? i don't know. i just don't know. read this shitstained cumspot of a book and meet a man who has forfeited his soul to fear and racism, and watch as it all comes full circle. read this madhouse. but beware.
I went to a very diverse high school in Los Angeles. In one of my English classes we had to write a paper on the single thing that affected our lives more than anything else. The class was probably about 25-30% black and when the teacher handed back the papers she told us that pretty much every single black student had written that being black was the single thing that affected their lives more than anything else. This led to what was easily the best discussion on race in America that I've ever been party to - before or since. Now, if only we'd had this incredible Vian book to read and bring into the conversation! But then again, this book is far too depraved and nasty to ever be taught in an American public school...
I guess it takes innocent kids or a crazy white Frenchman who had never been to America to tackle these tough issues.
On the surface, Vian (originally writing under a pseudonym) mimics the best of American pulp/noir from the 30's and 40's and the book works really well on this level and is a fun and fast read. Below this is an incredibly fascinating story of a man who looks white and lives his life as a white man until his black brother shows up and threatens to destroy his entire white world thereby setting into motion an identity crisis of epic proportions. Is he black? Is he white? What does that mean either way to both him and the people around him? How much is our identity tied to our physical being? Why do people care so much?
Vian doesn't give us the answers but he pushes all the right buttons. A must read!
Όσοι έχετε διαβάσει κάποιο άλλο βιβλίο του συγγραφέα, ασφαλώς θα γνωρίζετε ότι η γραφή του είναι θυμωμένη - στα όρια της απόγνωσης, και οι ήρωές του είναι εξαντλητικοί και, κυρίως, αντιπαθητικοί. Λευκοί, νέγροι, μιγάδες,μπράβοι,σωματέμποροι, γυναίκες μοιραίες- άλλοτε επικίνδυνες κι άλλοτε θύματα, άνθρωποι παρηκμασμένοι που πότε κινούν τα νήματα της ιστορίας και πότε η ιστορία τους τούς ισοπεδώνει σαν αυτοκίνητο που τρέχει με ιλιγγιώδη ταχύτητα, όλοι αυτοί και άλλοι πολλοί, αλληλεπιδρούν σε έναν κόσμο που δείχνει φτιαχτός-και άρα μπορείς να τον τσαλακώσεις σαν χαρτί και να τον πετάξεις στα σκουπίδια,αλλά δεν το κάνεις γιατί είσαι κομμάτι του. Όσοι δεν γνωρίζετε τον συγγραφέα, καλύτερα ρίξτε μια ματιά στο βιογραφικό του πριν επιλέξετε αυτό ή κάποιο άλλο βιβλίο του, για να μπορέσετε να μπείτε λίγο στο κλίμα. 5/5 ⭐
nema što crnog vian nije ubacio u ovih brzočitajućih 150 stranica: nasilje u svim oblicima, ubojstvo, seks, kurve, revolvere, rasizam, šovinizam, anksioznost, zadimljene barove, ilegalne kockarnice, priglupe murjake, samoubojstvo, bezvoljne poluobnažene žene. iako literarno jednostavno (djeluje kao nacrt za ozbiljnije djelo), vian je uspio iznijeti priču koristeći udarne, eksplozivne scene koje se izmjenjuju jedna za drugom pa te tjera da ideš dalje i dalje bez obzira koliko ti se tekst ili priča sviđali. baca na noir: izvukla ga je jaka atmosfera.

Az egyetlen probléma vele, hogy Sullivan féle trash-ként kezdtem hozzá, de végül a már viani művekhez közelebb álló, de annál kevésbé viani művet olvastam. Egyik korszakához sem passzol igazán, nekem hiányzott belőle az író zsenialitása. Mondjuk semmiképpen sem rossz regény, csak Vianhoz mérten gyenge egy kissé. (A minden hulla fekete kiadást olvastam)

The follow up of 'I spit on your graves' plays around on the same theme. Although the writer is aiming with the same creative force, the plot is somehow weaker.
Unlike the dreaminess of Boris Vian's books, the four books penned under the pseudonym Vernon Sullivan are mostly filled by raw depictions of sex and violence and occasional dark humour. Still every word is in its place holding its ground penetrating the reader with unbeatable force.
Не "пена дней" конечно, но к слову сказать это и не Борис Виан, а Вернон Саливан. Человек хоть и один, но настолько разный насколько разные эти двое писателей. После пены дней тут конечно все очень скучно и посредственно. читается легко, интересно, на одном дыхании, есть о чем подумать касательно расизма и психологии преступника, но и на этом всё.
what a strange book lol - my first time reading a weird, chaotic, parodic book in French. completely new field of vocab to learn, so much slang about hooking up (the more you know!) This book exposes how ludicrous racist social laws were - race dictates the protagonist’s every thought in a way that is all-consuming, only to be completely subverted by the end.
Τρίτο βιβλίο του Μπορίς Βιαν που διαβάζω, μετά το εξαιρετικά μέτριο και βλαμμένο κατά την γνώμη μου "Θα φτύσω στους τάφους σας" και το πολύ καλό και πραγματικά ξεχωριστό "Φθινόπωρο στο Πεκίνο". Απ'όσο έχω καταλάβει, τα βιβλία που έγραψε με το ψευδώνυμο Βέρνον Σάλιβαν κινούνται στο ίδιο μοτίβο, γράφηκαν για να προκαλέσουν με τους χαρακτήρες και τις πλοκές τους.
Το βιβλίο που μόλις τελείωσα μπορώ να πω ότι ήταν λιγότερο προκλητικό από το κακόφημο "Θα φτύσω στους τάφους σας" και οπωσδήποτε πιο καλογραμμένο. Όχι ότι δεν είχε τα προβληματάκια του και τις ενοχλητικές του στιγμές, πάντως διαβάστηκε απνευστί.
Τι να πω για την ιστορία; Ο Νταν Πάρκερ, ένας Λευκός κατά βάση, με αφροαμερικανικές ρίζες όμως, Αμερικάνος, προσπαθεί να γίνει επιτυχημένος στον κόσμο των Λευκών στην πόλη της Νέας Υόρκης, χωρίς κανένας να γνωρίζει την καταγωγή του. Όταν όμως ο αδερφός του, ένας μαύρος σαν την πίσσα τύπος, τον βρίσκει και του ζητάει χρήματα εκβιάζοντας τον με την αποκάλυψη της αληθινής του καταγωγής, ο πρωταγωνιστής μας τρελαίνεται. Και τότε είναι που θ'αρχίσει ένας κύκλος βίας που θα καταλήξει σ'ένα εκρηκτικό φινάλε...
Αυτά σε γενικές γραμμές. Ο Βιαν μέσω της παλπ αστυνομικής ιστορίας θίγει με ξεχωριστό τρόπο αρκετά ζητήματα, όπως μεταξύ άλλων αυτό του ρατσισμού. Και τώρα μιλάμε για σχεδόν εβδομήντα χρόνια πριν, με το στιλ αφήγησης να είναι αρκετά προκλητικό για την εποχή, αλλά ακόμα και για σήμερα!
Το βιβλίο περιέχει και ένα διήγημα δέκα σελίδων με τον τίτλο Τα σκυλιά, ο πόθος και ο θάνατος, το οποίο ίσως ενέπνευσε και τον Τζ. Γκ. Μπάλαρντ να γράψει το προκλητικό Crash. Όπως και να'χει ο Βιαν ήταν πολύ μπροστά από την εποχή του...
Leggibile in un'ora o poco più. Un uomo nero che ha le sembianze di un bianco che passa la vita nel farsi accettare come bianco facendo il buttafuori nei locali, sposando la bionda pallida Sheila da cui ha avuto un figlio che potrà studiare nelle migliori scuole, diventare qualcuno, e poi... Un giorno Dan, il protagonista, incontra Richad, suo fratello che non ha la stessa "fortuna" di venir scambiato per bianco. Lo ricatta, svelerà a tutti il suo segreto, a nessuno piace avere nel letto, o farsi picchiare da un nero. E Dan perde la testa. Deve a tutti i costi preservare lo status quo della sua vita. Ma il contatto con il fratello, e con la donna del fratello risvegliano un lato della sua indole che pensava d'aver soffocato. O almeno questo Vian ci fa credere, anche se dopo Sputerò sulle vostre tombe il lettore appassionato di questo scrittore anticonformista si aspetta il ribaltamento dell'intera vicenda.
Esilarante anche la postfazione, in cui il caro Boris se la prende con i critici. E fa bene a mio modesto avviso. 3 stelline.
Στον επίλογο του περιλαβαίνει τους κριτικούς της λογοτεχνίας, όχι κι άδικα εδώ που τα λέμε. Αν λοιπόν ήμουν ένας τέτοιος θα έλεγα ότι ο ήρωας του ο Νταν πάσχει από κάποιο σύνδρομο ενοχής που γεννάται από την καταγωγή του. Γιατί όχι; εδώ και σχεδόν έναν αιώνα δεν έχουν σταματήσει να παρουσιάζουν έγκριτα ως τέτοιους τους χαρακτήρες του Κάφκα, γιατί όχι και του Βιαν; Στα του βιβλίου τώρα, μια όντως καλή ιδέα. Μια αλληλουχία υποθέσεων και γεγονότων που παρασέρνουν τον Νταν σε μια δίνη από την οποία ο τρόπος εξόδου είναι προδιαγεγραμμένος.
Beyaz görünümlü siyah olmak… Aslında bir çoğumuzun kökenine baktığımız has köklerimize sahip olduğumuzu söyleyebilir miyiz? Ama daha da önemlisi bildiğimiz ya da bilmediğimiz kökenlerimizin bizim kişiliklerimiz, kararlarımız üzerinde etkisi var mı? Öncelikle bu kitap bana bu soru üzerine düşündüren bir kitap oldu. Kitapta sık sık, “siyahlar suç işler” yönünde beyazların üzerindeki algıya dem vurulmasının bunda etkisi olmuştur. Önyargılarımız değil mi zaten ırk üzerinde bize kesin yargılar çıkartan. Sonra baş karakter Dan’in, kitapla ilgili pek çok eleştiri yazısında, beyazlara düşman olan bir beyaz olduğundan bahsediliyor. Aslında bence bu kitap bir arada kalmışlığın hikayesi. Ne o taraf ne bu taraf olabilmek ya da kendini bir yere ait hissetmemek üzerine. Bunda en büyük etken ise kişinin kendi ön yargıları. Çünkü sonlara doğru okuldayken siyahi bir arkadaşıyla yaşadığı anısında, ta o zaman bile ortada dert edinecek bir durum yokken, arkadaşına şiddet uyguluyor. Arada kalmışlığının kendinde yarattığı baskıyı da şu sözlerle açıklıyor “Elimdekilerin farkındaydım. İki kişiydim, bugün mü yarın mı bilmiyorum, ama yakında birini seçmem gerekecekti.” Dan’ın aslında barda suç fedaisi olmasının yazar tarafından özellikle seçildiğini düşünüyorum. Kişinin ailesi, işindeki ilişkileri, mesleği, hatta bilinci, korkuları onu aslında işlemiş olduğu suç esnasında hiç engellemiyor. Bir diğer husus ise kadın erkek ilişkileri. Belki burada en doğru yorum şu olur, ırkınız ne olursa olsun, kadın -erkek ilişkilerinde mağdur hiç değişmiyor. Kısa ama düşündüren sorgulatan bir kitap. Cinsellikle ilgili kısımlar oldukça fazla. Bu tarz kitapları beğenmeyenler için ağır gelebilir. Ama işin felsefesine odaklanırsak, okunması gereken bir kitap, tavsiye ederim.
Spoiler var. Aşırı white male kitabı ya. Boris Vian okumayı seviyorum ya da direkt rahatsız edici şeyleri okumayı sevmemden kaynaklı bir sevgi de olabilir bu ancak niye böyle white male kitabı gibi yazıyorlar anlamıyorum bu beni aşırı sinirlendiriyor. Mesela Sheila'nın kocasının suçunu ve ırkını duyduğu zaman verdiği tepkiler aşırı yapmacık hayır belki çevrilirken böyle çıkmış olabilir ama eminim bir şey değişmemiştir. Lütfen biraz uğraşın da kadınları yazmayı öğrenin amk ya cidden çok sinir bozucu herkes aynı şeyi yazıyor özellikle bu kitapta bana o çok battı. Mezarlarınıza tüküreceğim i 2022 de okumuştum sonunda adamın da hangi sonla karşılaştığını hatırlamıyorum ama cidden bir allahın kulu bilmiyo mu bu adamın ne bok olduğunu bir de gerizekalı mal gidiyo özellikle sinemadayken öldürüyo anlamasınlar o olduğunu diye sonra mal olduğu için gidiyo kızın adını unuttum ama ona söylüyor bu mu akıllı şimdi ya. Neyse ben ana karaktere bayağı bilenmişim şimdi konuşursam bayağı bir şey derim. Vian aşırı akıcı yazıyor hemen okudum teşekkür ederim ama ana karakter sinirlerimi hoplattı önceki kitapta daha okeydi diye hatırlıyorum bu olaylar sanki ciddili ana karakter ana karaktermiş gibi değil de diğer karakterler de bir anlam ifade ediyormuş gibi yazılırsa çok daha iyi olabilir :/
Toujours aussi déconcertant de lire Boris Vian. Le racisme, le s*xe, l’alcool et la violence; voilà comment je pourrai définir au mieux ce qui constitue ce livre. C’est impossible de donner une note pour ce roman tellement il est immoral: on plonge dans la cruauté même de l’être humain (et encore, je le trouve soft par rapport aux autres de Vian).
Dan trompe sa femme régulièrement, frappe les clients de son bistrot depuis qu’il a commencé à travailler et boit du whisky alors même qu’il n’aime pas l’alcool. Ça c’est Dan. Il renie avoir des origines noires: ça fait « tâche », ça le dénigre , se revendiquer blanc lui permet tous les droits possibles. Il s’en remet alors à la violence, d’une brutalité sans pareil, lorsque son demi frère (j’avoue ne toujours pas avoir compris) noir lui demande de l’aide. Et à partir de là... ça part en vrille. Bain de sang, folie à l’état pure, juste sauvage.

на книжковому арсеналі дізнався, що Борис Віан наприкінці сорокових розважався тим, що пародіював хардбойлед нуар під псевдонімом Вернон Салліван. заінтригувався, придбав, приніс додому і тільки потім виявив, що українською перекладено аж третю новелу в серії. ну що ж, довелося читати перші дві.
друга — вже набагато цікавіша за першу. це знову blaxploitation, але вже більше схожий на hardboiled. історія лол: чорний головний герой мімікрує під білого, працює вишибалою в клубі для білих, має білу дружину, дитину, погляди, і взагалом йому дуже подобається це расистське оточення. але ось одного разу до нього додому приходить рідний брат, аби шантажем виссати трошки грошенят, напіввипадково руйнує нашому расисту його тендітну маскулінність та й таким чином розпочинає фестиваль дичини. в епатаж та лобову сатиру треба вміти, і з другого разу у Віана наче вийшло. особливо файно йому вдався фінальний плот твіст: він caught me unguarded і я ледве не розбудив своїм сміхом пів будинку. норм, готовий до третьої.
три главных слова: типичный борис виан. от этой книги не стоит ожидать особо ничего, кроме характерных автору жестокости и отвратных сцен - сюжета в данном произведении особого нет, сцены хоть и ужасны, но чувств никаких не вызывают. как и вся книга, в целом.
звезда за то, в какие времена это без боязни писалось и подробно описанные внутренние переживания героя.
