Between 1976 and 1988, the American pitcher Howard Bruce Sutter (January 8, 1953 – October 13, 2022) played 12 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB). He was a fervent supporter of the game in the late 1970s and early 1980s, making effective use of the split-finger fastball. Sutter, a six-time All-Star and World Series champion in 1982, finished his career with 300 saves, the third-most in MLB history, with an earned run average of 2.83.
