Boy, was I naïve about the interiors of those huge shingle style homes on Cape Cod and Long Island, and in Rhode Island-they were so opulent! I guess I was confused by their similarities to the Arts and Crafts style. Leland M. Roth does a good job tracing this architectural style from its earliest roots in Early American architecture to its founding in the late 1800s. He explains the major architects involved in its formation and how it developed across the country. Most of the chapters focus primarily on a single building including the building's location, architect, and original owner with photographs of its interior and exterior. Many of the buildings addressed had commercial purposes. If your interest in this book is as a student interested in architecture, you will find this book very interesting. However, if you are interested in home styles and are looking for any practical ideas, this is not the book for you!
