Книга попалась мне случайно в букинистическом, издание в мягкой обложке. Обычно я читаю пару страниц из книги, прежде чем ее купить, и тут сразу попала на историю археологических раскопок под кафедрой св. Петра. Оч. интересное смешение римских и раннехристианских артефактов было обнаружено там, и было ли это захоронением апостола Петра?
Очень живо написанная история базилики св. Петра, о ее месте в географическом и историческом контексте. Понравилось. М.б. хотелось бы больше иллюстраций, но при наличии интернета под рукой можно быстро посмотреть все, что угодно в любой степени детализации.

So if you're going to Rome, and plan to visit St Peter's this is a great guide book. It is fascinating and amusing and doesn't simply fall into the trap of listing sculpture after sculpture with some meaningless dates.

I read this book alongside Basilica by R.A. Scotti. Scotti's book is clearer, and this smaller tome had additional photos, diagrams and commentary. It was a good combination.

The first in this Harvard series I didn't like. It's a little too much Miller showing the reader how smart he is and not enough meat.
