Wyoming rancher Riley Stratton has nothing in common with his newly discovered young nephew Jake’s imaginary “stardust cowboy”—the one who makes dreams come true. Riley’s own dreams died so many years ago, he doesn’t even think about them anymore. Now he just works hard, doing his duty by the family ranch. He knows it’s only fair to buy out Jake’s half.
Trouble is, Jake has dreams too. After inheriting half a ranch, Jake’s boyish dreams of becoming a cowboy are alive and well. Which means Riley’s world is about to expand to include Jake’s fiercely determined, seriously tempting mother, Dori Malone, too. And much to Riley’s dismay, Dori stirs his dormant dreams to life.
But Riley doesn’t trust those dreams. He doesn’t trust Dori. He gave his heart once and won’t do it again. Some men are made for love. Others, like Riley, are made for duty. And some dreams not even Jake’s “stardust cowboy” can make come true. Or can they?
Anne McAllister has written nearly 70 romance novels for Tule Publishing and Harlequin Books.
She has won two RITA awards from the Romance Writers of America — for COWBOY PRIDE and THE STARDUST COWBOY — and has had nine other books which were RITA finalists.
Her books have also been finalists for the National Readers’ Choice Award. She was named Midwest Fiction Writers “Writer of the Year” and also received Romantic Times’ Career Achievement Award as “Series Author of the Year.”
But while the awards and sales are wonderful, Anne thinks the best part of writing is telling the story. With every new book she writes, she meets new characters – or gets to know old ones even better – and discovers what makes them and their relationships tick.
It’s the relationships that interest her most and the question about “where do you get your ideas?” has always astonished her as she has more ideas than she knows what to do with!
In het Nederlands gelezen. Titel Sterrenregen.
Seven year-old Jake Malone’s compelling belief in the veracity of a bedtime story written by his deceased father is the central theme in The Stardust Cowboy. All Jake has ever wanted is to be a real cowboy so when he discovers he’s inherited half a ranch he convinces his mother to move there with him so he can learn all there is to know about ranching. While this story is a romance, Jake pretty much steals the show. That said, I loved Jake’s mother Dori, who is determined to make the best of their situation, and uncle Riley, who isn’t sure that having them live with him is a good idea. This story is charming and entertaining and all I could wish for in a cowboy book. It made me smile again and again.
Honorable cowboy has Marianne Dashwood's kind of epiphany
Riley is such a wonderful hero. Honorable, grumpy, shy, and emotionally unavailable. When his brother Chris dies in a car accident, he finds out he has a nephew named James and he seeks him out because the kid was the heir to the other half of the family ranch. At first, Riley's intention was to talk to the kid's mom and offer to buy his half of the ranch, but the kid was a cowboy aficionado and convinced his mom that he had the right to keep the ranch and pursue his dreams, hence both James and his mom (Dori), move to the ranch. Dori is a great mom and works hard to help him with the tasks at the ranch. She is pretty and smart, but he stays as far away from her as he possibly can, because he feels an attraction to her but knows that his affections are invested elsewhere. Dori had suffered a lot when she was abandoned by Riley's brother Chris, who never ever showed up to meet the kid and she was scared about the feelings she was developing for Riley. Like Marianne Dashwood (from Sense and Sensibility), Riley had to figure out that love does change, that it is possible to love again and even to love better. Very sweet story!
I will always be drawn into a story that involves a child who is over the moon about the chance to become a real cowboy, helped of course, by the stardust cowboy in who he firmly believes. That Jake’s stardust cowboy is completely fictional matters not one bit to this boy who is determined to take on the adventure of a lifetime and make a dream come true. Now, the adults around Jake aren’t quite as convinced this is a good idea – but Jake makes it hard to resist at least trying to make this young one’s dreams come true… if reluctantly on Riley’s part.
If you love a romance where the child steals scenes, then The Stardust Cowboy is perfect for you. Riley’s brother Chris was killed in an accident, he also owned half the ranch. When Riley discovers that his brother had a son, well, the honorable cowboy sets out to buy Jake’s half of the ranch, dealing with his mother, Dori. Things didn’t quite turn out as Riley had expected when Jake declares his intention to become a cowboy and wants to move to “his” ranch sooner than yesterday. Jake’s belief that the stardust cowboy intended for the ranch to be partly his, that his “friend” would help in any way possible to make Jake’s dreams come true is perhaps a child’s fantasy… but neither Riley nor Dori have the heart to tear Jake’s dream apart.
Take two people who have been deeply hurt by love in the past, mix them in close proximity, with a mother’s love and determination to give her child every chance to fulfill his dream… and you have Dori and Riley. I liked them both individually, but Riley really needed to get himself out of the past and see what was right in front of him. Dori had good reason to doubt that love could last but at least her heart was a bit more open to the possibility than the man she was starting to fall for. I loved watching them work through the past, often reluctantly, and begin to see a future that involved home, family, and love all wrapped up in one place… Jake’s half ranch.
*I received an e-ARC of this novel from Tule Publishing. The opinions expressed in this review are my own – good, bad, or indifferent. I was not financially compensated for this review and no expectation of a positive review was promised.*
I received this arc of The Stardust Cowboy and voluntarily am reviewing it. This is the first book in The Cowboy’s Code series by Anne McAllister. I enjoyed this story. It was well written and the characters were very likable. I really like how this series is related to the characters in some of Anne’s other series. This book features Riley Stratton, a Wyoming rancher. He learns that his only brother died in a car accident. Then he learns that his brother had a young son that Riley was unaware of. His brother owned half the ranch and so Riley sought out his nephew and his mother to deliver the news.
Dori Malone and her son Jake were sad to learn about Jake’s dad’s death and shocked to learn that Jake had inherited half the family ranch. Riley offered to buy Jake’s half to give him money for the future. Jake doesn’t want to sell but go live on the ranch. His dad had written a story about a stardust cowboy and he thinks Riley is that special man. Dori decides to leave her family and take Jake to go live on the ranch. Her appearance surprises Riley. He is used to his solitary life and isn’t happy about the addition of Dori and his nephew to the ranch. Jake wants to be a cowboy and insists on helping Riley and learning from him. Dori takes on the cooking and helping where she can.
Riley starts feeling things for Dori and she develops feelings for him as well. He had a past relationship that ended badly, leaving him heartbroken. Also, he feels disloyal thinking about his brother’s lover. Dori would like a happily ever after with a husband and children but doesn’t think it possible. Riley avoids Dori and there are awkward encounters. The relationship between Dori and Riley builds slowly but they are good for each other. There is angst and romance and a nice family created.
I really liked this book and look forward to the next one in this series. I give it 5 stars.
Jake is a little boy who has been given a story all his life about a stardust cowboy. One night while at a wedding reception he notices a cowboy standing outside and when said cowboy walks away he notices things coming up from the ground that makes him think it's stardust. He tries to follow and loses sight of him. Later said cowboy, Riley, shows up at his house and tells his mother, Dori, that he is now half owner of his ranch. It turns out that Chris, Jake's father, was the owner of a ranch along with his brother. Even though Chris didn't want to be a rancher his brother did want to keep up the family ranch. At first Dori wanted to go ahead and sale the ranch but after her father belittled her son's dreams at a family dinner she could no longer deny her son his inheritance. So she picked up everything her and Jake had and moved to Wyoming to try out the ranch. Jake loved it and his Uncle Riley but Riley was hoping that they would only make it one week. But eventually he even liked having his nephew around just want so keen on being around his mother. They has a slow beginning but a very fast ending. In the end Riley realized he was getting his dreamed fulfilled and Dori realized that she was getting hers fulfilled as well. And all because Chris made a story for his son and his son wanted to be a cowboy.
The Stardust Cowboy by Anne McAllister This story starts out with Riley and he's on his way to pay a visit to a woman who birthed his nephew. He has sad news for her but is offering to buy out her 1/2 share of the family ranch. Dori and her son Jake think about it a while and she decides for Jake and his dream that they need to visit the ranch. Love that they just show up one day and she rather takes over the house chores. Riley keeps Jake with him all day teaching him how to take care of the animals and the ranch. One day it will all be his. Dori is able to meet the locals an there is a lot of gossip and the women want to know about her and Riley. She denies it then she notices he is very friendly with an old class mate Tricia. Lots of twists and turns. Love the ranch and everything there is to do there, the community coming together and the love of everyone. Yes there is gossip and rumors but it's like that in a small town. You wonder if they will get together or if they are going their separate ways. Love legend of the stardust cowboy, such an imagination. Adult situations.
When I first thought when I started this book was why is this grown man acting like a spoiled child only to keep reading and realizing the author started the book with a child! I end up really liking Jake you could tell he was a determined kid with stars in his eyes and no one was going to stop him from letting his dreams come true and that he could not do something in life. I liked Dori as well she seemed like a fighter as well and why some of her story didn't always show that you could see where Jack got his fighting spirit from. I was not a huge fan of Riley he seemed like a big push over and not take charge kind of cowboy I was expecting for this situation. In the end I wanted so much more from this group of friends. I wanted to know more about Trish and Jeff even thought I was not a huge fan of Trish I liked Jeff he seemed like a a really good guy. Overall I really enjoyed this fun book, I will say this book does contain adult situations so it may not be suitable for all readers.

A heartwarming read with great characters, too, The start of a new series I highly recommend to you! For my complementary copy, I say thank you, As I share with you this, my honest review.
This first story in the series takes us to Wyoming where rancher Riley Stratton is now sole owner of the family ranch, after the untimely death of his brother Chris. When he discovers his brother had a son, he decides to do the right thing. Let the boy’s mother know he owns part of the ranch and is ready to propose a purchase of that half. What no one expected was that the boy, Jake and his imaginary “stardust cowboy” would change everything. Jake has always wanted to be a cowboy and he and his mother go to the ranch hoping to be able to stay. While Riley expected them to leave and never see them again, the three form sort of a family. Even though Dori starts having feelings for Riley, his heart belongs to someone else. At least that’s what he believes. This was a story about second chances in live and love and the dreams of a little boy and his “stardust cowboy”. I was entrusted a copy of this book by Tule Publishing. The opinions expressed are solely my own.
The Stardust Cowboy by Anne McAllister is the first The Cowboy's Code Series. With an adorable young boy with a great love of all things cowboy. Wyoming rancher Riley Stratton’s nephew is my favorite character of the book. The adult characters are likable but Jake is downright lovable.
It takes a young child to remind adults that dreams can come still true in this book. Shattered dreams can be rebuilt being made into better ones. Even old dreams can be renewed which s definitely something Riley needed to learn.
I had read some of a series years ago in paperback with the same series title but not this one. So I can not say if this is a new release or an older one under a new name or publisher. It did have a 90’s feel to it but that does not take away from it being an entertaining read.
An ARC of the book was given to me by Tule Publishing which I voluntarily chose to read and reviewed. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I loved everything about this book, especially how the Stardust Cowboy came about and how little Jake believed and even saw proof he was the real deal. Loved how we got let in on how Riley, Dori and Jake were thinking and reacting this book is just the best. And I got a little peek at the next book in the series and cannot wait for it. I choose to read and review an advance reader’s copy of this book.
This is a great first book in this series. It grab a hold of me from the very beginning and did not let go. I loved the story line and the characters. I am really looking forward to the next book in this series. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
3.5 stars. I liked this story, I found Dory and Jake really great characters. Riley's however was a little weak, as I found him quite passive, and his backstory really hard to believe, and struggled to have any respect for the guy to be pinning over some gold digger that long. Overall, an entertaining story. *I received an ARC of this book and this is my voluntary and honest review.
This character driven chasing your dreams story had me from the first. Told from many POVs helped to add depth of feelings. Little Jake almost stole the show. The innocence of Dori and Riley was definitely not the norm today, but I fell in love with this sweet family.
This was a great contemporary ranch romance. He'd lost the woman he loved to another msn 10 years ago. She'd been in love with his brother for years. Life and love changes everything. This wad a great read.
The mother reading her son the story of the Stardust Cowboy becomes real for him. At least that looked like stardust and the man was definitely a cowboy. The story keeps getting better as you read. Sweet romance.
There was a little more descriptive parts I think were not necessary but over all it was a really good story. I do think though that the cowboy was a little indecisive and that drug on a bit
I was so happy to find this older book of hers on BookBub. I laughed out loud at a couple of spots and enjoyed watching the characters find their way to HEA.
Enjoyed this book very much. Loved how it included the POV of Jake, the little boy in the story, as well as his mom, Dori, and his uncle Riley. Well written, great storyline that smoothly flowed, and good characters.
I do love a good romance, particularly with well written characters and an interesting plot. This didn’t fail. Riley was staunchly moral, Dori an idealistic woman who refused to let her father dictate to her what she should do. Definitely recommend this as a light read.
A bit of a sweet read with a cowboy theme. Young Jake is certainly a character and knows how to work his mum and uncle. Felt the uncle was a bit daft with the ex and should have shut her down quickly. That said an okay read.
