Chuva Braba (the English title is Wild Rain) is a short novel with an interesting take on daily life in Cape Verde. The story is about a boy, Mané Quim, who lives in a small agricultural community on one of the Cape Verde islands. The island is plagued by drought which threatens to harm the crops. When Mané Quim's godfather offers to take him to Brazil, he has to choose between staying with his family in poverty or starting a new life in a country that he doesn't know.

Wild Rain was described to me as “a Romeo & Juliet” love story set in Cape Verde. Erm….not really. It is, however very evocative of the slow, hard life of the farmers in the islands, affected by the consequences of drought and poor land or money management. I can clearly picture the characters and scenes from my experience in CV. Some of the turns of phrase in the translation I read were startlingly fresh. The translation was limited, more direct than literary.

Boy does befriend girl, with rough lovemaking that seems problematic from the American cultural view: consent issues vs cultural norms. It was gritty and realistic.

It shows the pressures in a society to do right by family, stabilize community, or leave your soul to survive. Several characters have ethical dilemmas and their fates are intertwined, as well as changed by the threat or failure of the fickle wild rains that would feed the crops and change destinies.
