James Krüss was a German writer of children's and picture books, illustrator, poet, dramatist, scriptwriter, translator, and collector of children's poems and folk songs. In 1968 he received the biennial, international Hans Christian Andersen Award for Writing, recognizing his "lasting contribution to children's literature".

Ein wundersames Buch über eine ungewollte Seereise zu einer Inselgruppe mit sprechenden Tieren, ungewöhnlichen Bräuchen und aberwitzigen Transportmethoden. Auch 60 Jahre nach der Veröffentlichung funktioniert das Buch wunderbar. Nur die Gestaltung des Umschlags und die Illustrationen der aktuellen Ausgabe fallen weit hinter den Büchern aus den 1960er zurück.

Es ist nicht das beste Buch von Krüss. Vielleicht sogar eins seiner schwächeren, wie ich finde. Verglichen mit der Mehrzahl an Kinderbüchern ist dennoch überdurchschnittlich gut.

I read the English version of this book and am just too lazy to "manually add book" today. It's a book that I should have read as a kid. As a kid, I would have loved it. As an adult(and perhaps in a cynical mood), it didn't hit the spot. Talking animals, an Alphabetical system of government, interesting modes of transportation and bed hanging from the ceiling all failed to put a twinkle in my eye. So it's true. Adults don't get to go to Narnia.

Loved this book! It has the craziness of Alice in Wonderland, but with (I think) a more discernable theme: a message about happiness, a message about war.
