Rachel Hawthorne, who also writes as Lorraine Heath and Jade Parker, is the daughter of a British beauty (her mother won second place in a beauty contest sponsored by Max Factor® during which she received a kiss from Caesar Romero-who played the Joker on the old Batman TV series) and a Texan who was stationed at Bovingdon while serving in the air force. Lorraine was born in Watford, Herts, England, but soon after moved to Texas. Her "dual" nationality has given her a love for all things British and Texan. She enjoys weaving both heritages through her stories.
When she received her BA degree in psychology from the University of Texas, she had no idea she had gained a foundation that would help her to create believable characters—characters that are often described as “real people.” She writes for both adult and young adult readers. She received a Romantic Times Career Achievement Award for Americana historicals. Her novels have been recognized with a RITA, Romance Writers of America’s most prestigious award for excellence, a HOLT medallion award honoring outstanding literary fiction, a Romantic Times Reviewer’s Choice Award, five Texas Gold Awards, the Golden Quill Award, the Rising Star Award as well as other awards and recognitions. Her novels have been selections of the Doubleday and Rhapsody Book Club. Her novels have appeared on bestseller lists, including USA Today, Waldenbooks, and most recently, the New York Times.
After reading the second story in this series I was unsure whether I wanted to continue reading or not. I was happy to see that the author Hawthorne gave the readers some closure in regards to Brittany's status as a Static or a Shifter. However, I found that the story was a little bit rushed, it took me an hour to read this book and I felt that the relationship that developed between Connor and Brittany was quite unbelievable. After having noted how obsessed Connor was with Lindsey in the previous novel, I was extremely surprised of how quickly he started to develop feelings for Brittany, especially since he knew her before and never had those feels. I felt that Brittany was sort of desperate for his love and he for hers but only because Lindsey had rejected him and chosen Rafe as her mate. It only took EIGHT DAYS or less for Connor to fall in love with Brittany, after being rejected by his chosen mate. If that does not scream rebound relationship, I don't know what does. I feel like the author tried to tie everything up in a neat bow and lost the opportunity to tell a more heartwrenching fulfilling story of two strong characters. Don't get me wrong I'm happy for Brittany, but I just wanted more out of her and Connor's story.
This is more of a 2.5 rating. There were some things that I didn't agree with. I felt so bad for Brittany. I can't even imagine being disappointed like that after growing up and wanting something so bad. In a way it was a happy ending. Although I'm not sure in reality it would be as great. I feel that things probably wouldn't be as good. There is one more book in the series so hopefully it all ends well.
I felt pretty good with the first two books in the Dark Guardian series, so I expected something more from this book. But it wasn't as good as I thought it would be. After I had finished the story, I felt quite depressed.
Brittany didn't have enough potential to be a heroine. I thought she was a charmless girl who did her best to moon over a boy again and again, for a very long time.
The ridiculous thing was that Connor suddenly realized that he was attracted to Brittany!!! A few days after breaking up with his girlfriend!?? It didn't sound reasonable to me.No.
I thought this was incredibly cliched and cloying. I started by reading the first couple pages aloud, which made the silliness of it more obvious. If the author was trying to sound like an exceptionally romantic and melodramatic teenage girl, then she succeeded. However, the plot is fairly interesting and fast-paced.
Brittany was not my favorite character in the previous two books, so I wasn't super excited about starting this one, but she grew on me. The story was fairly predictable (though less than the other ones), but I was pleasantly surprised that Brittany's relationship with Connor had a more natural feel. With Connor being Lindsey's cast-off, I wasn't too sure about being able to see him as the love interest in this one, but it worked. It still had that slightly unrealistic, rushed feeling, but I liked it anyway. The switching of main character for every book does make it a little harder to stay interested though. I feel like just when their story is starting, we switch to someone else. Ah well.

I thought for a while about the rating for this book, 3.5. I wasn't sure how I felt about it but there is a particular part in the book that earned that .5. I really enjoyed this book as a quick read!
Y he ahí el gran dilema.
My previous intention...? To skip over this and head straight for the next one, for Brittany irritated me far too much for me to even consider picking it up. Can one say "obsessive much"? So, that is exactly what happened, I skipped to the next book. Not until it was finished and I was left to stare at this on my bookshelf did I decide "what the heck"and begin to read. I will not say how long it took me to read-for who really cares about that?-but I will say this: I was both nuts and right for leaving book last. Even as I read it over, I still get the same feeling of wanting and longing for those written moments trapped inside the pages. Brittany is a Static, amongst a pack-nay, and entire clan of Shifters, who can do three times the things she can. Personally, a feeling that she was cheated looms in the readers mind, as well as her own. Practically borderlining creepy-obsessive over Connor, now single ;^), Brittany, in this book, feels more real, losing her annoying factor. One can feel her disappointment and longing to be something she's not, will never be. Pity is felt towards her. Does she need it? No. This straight-forward, speaks-her-mind girl earns every admiration she can get! After reading her scene in the gym with Connor, I felt like hitting the gym myself, feeling pumped! I give this as much praise as I gave Vampire Crush for this is the second book that's reached me completely. Trapped together in Bio-Chrome, with no one else but each other, some steamy scenes are bound to arrive sooner or later. Connor's ability to forgive stunned me to silence, yet his devotion was the kind many girls dreamed of. Connor really changes in this book, loosing his innocence in just a few chapters. However, in the end, it didn't matter. I just love reading scenes and dreaming about them, changing them up a bit, messing with the plot a little. I think I'll read it again.
Well, okay. I read this book when I was twelve and even then I remember thinking, 'hell. Rachel Hawthorne really has some fetish for a bad boy.'
I mean really, it was UNBELEIVABLE. It was like Twilight, on the wolfy side of things. Frickin unbelievable. Every other paragraph went on about Connor's sexy stubble, his muscles... well it's been awhile since I've read it but I'm pretty sure I recall some instances with Brittany floundering at his muscles. And I'm definitely not risking my remaining IQ opening that ridiculous black and pink cover.
In the previous books, BOTH Kayla and Lindsay really went into depth about just how rebellious their bad boys were. Connor seemed like a type of golden boy, in Lindsay's POV. But in Dark of the Moon, Connor is just one more LucasRafe creature of just sexy teenage rebellion, which is a good read I guess but honestly it drove me up the wall. Way to be inconsistent, Hawthorne.
Anyway, it pissed me off how Brittany (so awesome in Lindsay's book) just grew straight into a Kayla for Lucas. FRISKY TEENAGE ROMANCNE OVERLOAD. STUPID STUPID STUPID.
I was honestly surprised when I read over the comments before me and absolutely no one commented on the exact character stereotype ALL Lucas, and Rafe, and Connor possessed as all Kayla, and Lindsay, and Brittany described them.
And actually, I was eleven when I read this book. And I still remember what I thought about it. That should really tell you something about how shallow Hawthorne had her love interests. And now I will sum up my feeling about this series with an emoticon.
The setting off this book is in a small town called Wolford which is located in a national forest that borders Canada. The main character are Brittany and Connor McCandless. Connor and Brittany come from a pack called the Dark Guardians. All girls at the age of seventeen transform on the full moon after their birthday with their mate. On the other hand, all males at the age of eighteen transform on the full moon by themselves. After they transform, the guys choose their mates. However, Brittany did not transform on the full moon, so she begins to come up with excuses for why she did not change. If Brittany is not a Shifter, she knows Connor will never love her. Therefore Brittany must decide whether to go to Bio-Chrome, the packs biggest enemy, or tell the pack her secret.
I absolutely adored this book. I liked how the author made you feel as if you were there in the story. I also liked how there were multiple twists in the story that kept you on your toes. However, my favorite part of the book was how Connor, a well-known person, devoted his love to Brittany even though she wasn't as well liked. Even though, I loved this book, I did not like certain characters attitudes.
I would suggest this book to anyone who loves romance, adventure, suspense, and anyone who does not feel like they belong among their family or peers.
After the first two installments I did not have that much expectation with this one, however I was satisfied and I loved it, Rachel, good job, I can not say that I do not like something because I loved everything, Brittany is a great person, she is so gray, not like the first two protagonists, Brittany is so real that she felt that she knew her, loved her story, the development of the book and love with Connor, they put together a great couple, she was also the best Connor was also a great co-star, I love her personality and everything in it. The story was amazing and its impacting end, love as Connor declared his partner, love as the two and his relationship developed in the book and the new story that we present seeing and knowing more of the shapeshifters ... Great book

this was ok as compared to the last two dark guardian books. this one is all about the dilemma of britanny being unable to shift and falling in love with connor (who we remember from book 2 as the supposed to be mate of lindsey). as i was reading this book i thought britanny just had the fluke and later on would be able to shift into wolf form. but it turns out that she has a human dad and his genes was passed onto her...so her dreams of being a shifter, poof! gone! but at the end of it she was still accepted as a dark guardian and most of all by connor as his mate...still a happy ending for her as well as the whole gang since they got rid of the bio-chrome people once and for all.
I loved this last installment in the trilogy. Rachel Hawthorne wrote each book from the perspective of one of three heriones who are friends. In the first two books, I could not tell whether or not I would like Brittany. She was always quiet, menacing and scowling in the background. I did not get a sense of whether she was good or evil; however, this book reveals all and I must say, I truly enjoyed it. Although I know this is the end. I wonder if Hawthorne will now write another trilogy from the guys perspective. Who knows??????????
This is the last book in the Dark Guardian series. The author Rachel Hawthorne has ended the series so beautifully and simple. The ending was like a fairy tale. I was so mad when I finished the book, thats how great this series is in my opinion.
These summaries really spoil the biggest surprises. We wouldn’t have known that Brittany hadn’t transformed if the synopsis hadn’t spoiled it. That would have been a really good surprise. What were they thinking?! If that isn’t bad enough, the prologue spoils even more. It started off with Brittany and Conner lying together and touching each other, with Conner even saying he loved her. There goes another big surprise! The guy she’s been pining for for 2 books now and she gets him. And then is betraying him! Triple whammy. Don’t save anything for us to experience in real time!
I had thought it was so massively unrealistic—and sexist—that no female in the thousands of years that Shifters had existed had shifted on her own, without a male. But Brittany shared that no female had changed alone in generations, and the ones who had were considered myths. So they can change alone, so why the major sexism toward solo female shifts??
When she got back to Wolford after not shifting, she saw Conner. At least Brittany wasn’t going to steal another girl’s guy; she had standards.
Brittany told him she never thought Lindsey appreciated him and he deserves better.
At one point he looked at her lips and I really didn’t like that. What happened to not getting with Brittany? And he just got back from fighting with Rafe over Lindsey. Way too soon for this.
She snuck into a room to read the ancient tome, and Lindsey caught her. At least Brittany told her that she didn’t transform so one person knew the truth.
Lucas told Brittany he didn’t think there was ever a female shifter to shift solo in recorded history. What happened to Brittany saying they were legends?! Lucas’s grandpa told her there were no recorded women who shifted alone. She was contradicting her own history she’d stated in the beginning of the book.
Brittany went to work out in the gym, and Conner was there, looking at her and getting into a contest of wills over weight lifting. He then attacked her and they sparred, and Lucas and Kayla and others gathered to watch. It had all been a test to see if she could be Conner’s second in command since she’d been chosen for his team. She was pissed that he’d needed to test her.
Lindsey told Brittany that she hoped she’d get with Conner, but Conner seemed distant. Brittany told her that Lindsey had made a fool out of Conner, something she’d never do. I wished she would stop judging Lindsey like that without trying to understand any of what Lindsey had gone through.
They all watched a movie in their home theater, and Conner got up and told Brittany to sit with him, taking her hand. He put his arm over the back of her chair and feathered his knuckles over her jaw and under her chin. She didn’t trust this, because a few nights ago he’d been committing his heart, body, soul, and life to Lindsey forever. He’d gotten her name tattooed on his shoulder. His lips touched her ear. She reacted and he took her out of the theater and they went outside. He took her hips in his hands and she told him she wouldn’t be his rebound girl. Conner said Lindsey had told him Brittany had the hots for him.
He was also disappointed that Brittany had let him win. She told him she hadn’t wanted him to lose in front of everyone after losing the fight to Rafe but she thought he was strong and Conner said “Just shut up” which I really didn’t like, and then kissed her. You don’t tell a girl to shut up.
Conner said Rafe didn’t beat him; he walked away because he didn’t love Lindsey. He said you don’t want to be the rebound girl? Fine, but don’t tease me with that fine-honed body either.
She got back from kissing Conner, and Lindsey and Rafe were together and Lindsey could smell that she’d been right up against Conner. Brittany said so? You ditched him and what she did with him was none of Lindsey’s business. Her bad attitude was so irritating and unlikable. Then she told Lindsey that Conner had said he didn’t love Lindsey, like she was trying to hurt Lindsey! Lindsey had thought the whole time that she didn’t love Conner, only to love him at the end but not in the way she loved Rafe, and the author is going to have Conner not love her at all even though he was the one who’d said the L word? Screw this! You don’t take that away from Lindsey. Conner loved her, just not as deep as a mate.
Conner had her taken off of his team, because she was too much of a distraction. They were all going to the Sky Fox, and Brittany and Conner were abducted. Mason held them in a cage. Conner said he felt the punch to the gut that Lucas had told him about. They spent their night kissing and touching, not as far as Conner wanted to go. Brittany told him to tell her she wasn’t a rebound girl, and he did. Why would you go so fast when you just got out of a relationship with someone you’ve known your whole life? And why would you be kissing when you’re locked in a cage and being watched on a camera?
The thing that she did do the same in each novel is was to have a wild animal encounter. Mason let a cougar into their cage to force Conner to shift, and he killed it, which sucked so bad. He’d been trying to get Brittany to shift and she finally came clean about her status. About time.
And then she just started divulging all this information, telling Mason she’d tell him anything he wanted to know. They’re called Shifters, they can change at will, Lucas must not have been unconscious since he didn’t shift back in the cage. Then, after hating that she’d outed Lucas, she wanted to only tell Mason what information wouldn’t give him an advantage. He asked if just the male Sherpa’s were shifters and she said no there are females too. They can’t shirt until they’re 17 for females and 18 for males then shift at will. The tattoos are Celtic symbols of their mate’s name. Shifters live all over the world. They’re hiding hidey holes in the forest with clothes and food. He told her to tell him everything he hadn’t asked. She said guys go through the change alone but girls have to have their mate there.
The scene from the prologue where Conner said he loved her and she was thinking about the things they could be doing was so rushed. It did not fit it at all and came out of nowhere.
The “big” betrayal was that she had agreed to take the first serum if Mason let her back into the cage with Conner. Conner told her not to, not to change into something he couldn’t love. And just like that, she chose not to take it. Mason took it right then and there and got caught in a transformation that was partway to wolf with a lot of pain.
Her mom said she and the guy who went through her transformation with her realized they weren’t mates, and she’d met Brittany’s father, making it seem like she’d already met him before her transformation. But after they broke out of the lab, her mom said she met Brittany’s dad after her transformation. Did not add up. It was also weird that she told Kayla and Lindsey to stay and hear it. Why would she want to say that in front of her daughter’s friends??
Mason attacked Conner, crazed, and Brittany ended up killing him with a stick for a stake. Conner had already killed his dad. So that was that. The biggest threats were taken out so easily, either one taking the other out. Lucas was going to have them both buried at Wolford. Whyyy??
There was a tribunal to discuss Brittany’s status as a Dark Guardian. They briefly questioned her on her actions and played a video of her making a deal with Mason and telling him certain things. And that was it. Conner claimed her for his mate in front of everyone which meant he couldn’t vote. Of course all the gang voted her worthy, and that was that. Not a single person felt she was unworthy due to lying and working with the enemy almost?? She didn’t even get a slap on the wrist for touching the ancient tome without permission or telling Mason all those details about Shifters. It was too perfect. And the Elders knew she wasn’t going to shift. It went unexplained, because the mysterious Elders just Know All.
It was refreshing that she didn’t magically become a Shifter just because she wanted it. She was a human and they had to make it work like that. The Elders mentioned something about a human meant to unite the races and maybe that was her—so not needed. But this was a realistic outcome for her to stay human.

Honestly, I enjoyed this the most out of the three books that I've read so far. I felt sorry for Brittany because I can see how badly she wanted to be a wolf, since she's been growing up beside them, learning their ways for years. Deep inside, i was hoping that she was a late bloomer or something, so that she don't have to suffer by looking at everyone being the one thing that she wanted. She may be the toughest girl in the block and I LOVE IT. Really, i'm all for female power and damn girl, she packs a punch.
At first, I was wary of Connor's sudden attraction to Brittany. You could say it was as if I was Brittany herself, not wanting him to treat her as a rebound girl but it all works out.
Finally *spoiler* Mason dies. You cannot believe how happy I was to hear that he, together with his dad is dead. That's what you get for being evil and selfish.
I'm still hoping for a miracle, somehow so that Brit can be a wolf. My heart goes out to her, she deserves it. Even if her blood is human.
I'm off to read the last book, I kinda don't want to read it because then i'll be done with this series and I'm too attached to this, truthfully.
Dark of the Moon is a fantasy novel written by Rachel Hawthorne, it's the third book from the tetralogy Dark Guardian.
This book narrate the love story between Brittany and Connor. Brittany has always been in love with Connor but he never pay attention to her, he has always been with Lindsey but now he's free because Lindsey choose Rafe as a partner. At the same time, she start to feel different from others werewolves, she have started to think that maybe she is not a werewolf and that could been a problema because, if her thought are true, she will never be accepted on her pack and the most important thing, Connor will never love her.
In my opinion, Brittany is a character that at the begining I dind't like, for me she was rude and boor, but at the end I appreciated her. I like the book because I like the storyline, the book have some amazing turns, so you never know how is going to end.
I didn't care much for Brittany in the beginning. She is a 17 year old girl who has an obsessive crush on a boy. The shifter part of the story is what drew me to this book, (because when can I ever turn down a book about shifters/werewolves?) But her POV is that of a person with a one-track mind: Conner McCandless. All her thoughts revolve around this shifter boy who she loved and wishes would claim her as his mate but he chose someone else. She wants someone she can't have. I never liked that portrayal of teenage girls, that their whole life revolves around a boy. The dramatic "their life is ending because a boy doesn't love them back" is such a cliche that needs to be retired.
As the stoey progressed and became more shifter and mates centered it became better, but still not the greatest beginning or portrayal of teenage girls. I admired Brittany's bravrry and strength despite her naivite.
I'm gonna be honest here. I was not a big fan of Brittany, when I have read the previous two books. But she grow on me in this one. I cheered for her through the whole book and I'm glad that she got a happy ending after all she had gone through. About Connor - I liked him from the start and I felt very sorry for him through the previous book. I wanted him to find a woman that would appreciate him and love him and that happened, so I am satisfied.
Dark Guardian series - my rating: Moonlight: ☆☆☆☆☆ (5/5) Full Moon: ☆☆☆ (3/5) Dark of the Moon: ☆☆☆☆ (4/5) Shadow of the Moon: ☆☆☆ (3/5)
