Telling Tales

Rate this book
Allie has held a brightly burning torch for Wade since college. They were part of a writing group together, and everything about those days with him and their friends Kitty and Cameron fills her with longing. When their former Professor leaves them his rambling mansion in his will, it's a chance for them to reunite.

But there's more than friendship bubbling beneath the surface. As secrets are revealed and relationships rekindled, the stories get dirtier and the stakes get higher. And now Allie's realized that she isn't quite sure who she wants...fun-loving Wade, or quiet, restrained Cameron.

Neither have been honest about their feelings, and now they have the chance to act on all of the tales that ignite their most primal desires.

My second read of 2016, and it was another deliciously hot one. I love Charlotte Stein's writing, especially her meticulously crafted first person narrations and thrilling, kinky erotic scenes. She has a thing for writing tense, repressed subby men, and sort of fumbling-into-dominance women. It's endearing, and at times funny, but never in a "laughing at them" way. Instead, Stein takes everything uncomfortable and awkward about sex and makes it all part of the erotic thrill. She's a unique voice in erotic fiction, and one of my very favorites.

Covers similar territory as Control (first-person heroine falling into the dominant role, extraordinarily repressed hero, and other people adding emotional/sexual complications) but with additional post-college friendships emotional minefields. I was engrossed x1000000, but I kept tripping up on some clunky writing and a couple times, my primary thought was, "Okay, this is just porn now. Get back to the emotional complications!" (But, also, the scene crammed with more sex than one can shake a stick at, it resolved in a way that made me--and a couple characters as well--go, "Holy cow. Did not see that coming. Wow.")

And I really liked how the relationship between Allie and Wade (not the main male protagonist, but the guy she's initially hung up on) developed and worked out--you don't see that in romances, let alone erotica. Or at least I haven't seen it before.

Basically I always just want to high five Charlotte Stein after reading one of her books.

"He did say that thing about preferring giving over receiving- probably because he's a god sent from the heavens to stun us mortal women into submission"

Unfortunately I was not stunned into submission by this book. I loved the first book I read by Charlotte Stein (Control) and thought this would be a good book to get me out of my reading funk. Sadly not.

It has all the markings of a good erotic novel, particularly its similarities to control in that the male lead is shy, relectuant and ashamed of his addiction to all things sexual. However unlike Control in Telling Tales I just didn't feel the same connection to the characters. This book seemed too short, we didn't get enough time to really see the characters for what they were, even the ending was disapointing in that we kind of got a HEA, but it was anti-climatic.

There was no slow build up of sexual frustration, no slow building of feelings, they just seemed to clinically appear out of nowhere and the only real slow thing we got was this entire story.

I enjoy Charlotte Stein's writing. Her narrators make me laugh, descriptions are fresh, and the love scenes are always filthy hot. Plus, she does beta heroes well. I will say this one read more like erotic fantasy than a full romance as probably 80% of the book was the sex. And usually back to back sex scenes in my erotic romances lead to me skipping pages because it can be overkill, all the scenes blending together. But the tension and angst between the characters is kept high in this one, which makes it a page turner. I devoured it in a day.

I should have reviewed this as soon as I read it, but the truth is I have re-read it several times. As ever, top notch erotica from Charlotte Stein. An interesting premise and four well formed characters. Woven within the main story is the characters own erotica, almost like a book within a book and in a subtlety different voice. It's a clever book. Her mastery of language and metaphor and humour is also second to none. And, naturally, absolutely off the charts sex. Long may she continue to write brilliant erotica.

Escapist erotica that still manages to pinpoint those very real post-college feelings and attempts to navigate relationships as a young adult. As in, this totally happened to me and I felt the same way! Except for the foursome part! But THAT would have been really fun too!

If you want a book filled with sex, including three-some & four-somes, this is your book. Very shallow characters and very little character development.

Allie, Kitty, Wade, and Cameron are all members of the Candy Club. A long time ago, they used to spend long weekends at Professor Warren's mansion. They would spend their time telling stories (all good but naughty). So it was not really a surprise when the professor died and left the mansion to the group. The Candy Club decides to go to the mansion for some story time and maybe more.

I have read many, many erotic novels. While all of them pretty much have the same theme, there are always something about these books that could make them a little different or extra steamy. Well sadly, if this book was steamy I won't know. I only got to chapter two and had to put it down. There was no substance in regards to a good storyline. Also, I was not feeling any of the characters what so ever. Everyone was just so horny that they could not turn it off. Which was a turn off.

The first 10% was hard to get through. It's taken me several tries to make it past that point and continue. But, happily, I will report that after 10% it takes off like a shot and it's a complete fuck-fest. Ho-ly Shit! This is pretty kinky. We've got a little masturbation scenes, voyeur scenes, M/M, menage, dirty talk, reading kinky fantasies aloud, D/s and some f/f elements. Kinda hard to be bored with all that going on. Still, not my favorite C.S.

Well, certainly one of the dirtier of Charlotte Stein's repertoire *thought I still think Make Me was the best* but some of the characters here were a bit flat for me. Luckily Cameron and Allie saved it, and I'm pretty damn sure I read most of it with my mouth hanging open, so there's that.

DNF 20% taking characters too long to get to the sex (Chapter 4). ThIs book has 14 chapters and five people, all I ask in a good mature audience book is...GET to the COPULATION by the second chapter.

This review contains vague spoilers about sex content, but no plot spoilers. Also note that the book itself has a big spoiler about the Earthesea Cycle series, which took me off guard.

This was a kind of "literary" erotic story, about four college friends who are reunited when a professor they liked dies and wills them his house. I say "literary" not because of its vocabulary or prose style, but because of its themes and because the backstory is about how they experimented with writing erotic stories and reading them to each other when they were in college. Now that they are reunited, it is a chance to examine what all that might have been about, and what subtexts were going on in all those stories.

I am not trying to gloss over anything here: this book is full of explicit experimental sex scenes. The "experimental" involves emotional challenges, multiple partners, and some S&M (more psychological than physical, although safe words and bruising are also a part of it). It wasn't just for shock value, though: I thought it was interesting how Ms. Stein uses each scene to examine the psychology of the characters and their interactions, something akin to Tiffany Reisz's technique in The Siren.

Despite the experimental nature, some of the sex dynamics and dialogue are actually a bit cliched. This is salvaged somewhat because Ms. Stein seems to use cliche as a kind of wink to the reader and between the characters. Her writing style seems to be an interesting mix of serious and silly, and at times I would laugh out loud, shake my head in disbelief, or pause with empathy, often all in the same scene.

I was so intrigued by the initial concept and humor, that I was a bit surprised when I started to lose interest halfway through, and finished the story only so that it wouldn't stay on my pile of unfinished books. I've been trying to figure out the reason, and I think it was two things. First, the narrator is very self-reflective, to the point that she is thinking about every interaction and emotional nuance for the entire 177 pages. I liked this at first, but it started to feel annoying and angst-driven after a while. I was wishing she could stop and just enjoy the moment once in a while (outside of an orgasm). The second thing was that these people all communicated through surrogates . It is an interesting method of communication, but it shouldn't be the primary method of communication. I liked that a lot of conversations were taking place in response to various events, but I was disappointed that so many things were not being said and placeholders were being used for real communication. It's okay if that limitation is what you are analyzing, but in this book it was painted as a strength, and that bothered me.

I would recommend this as an interesting character study for people who like erotica, are okay with the S&M aspects, and don't mind a very analytical narration and dysfunctional relationships.

A NIGHT OWL REVIEWS BOOK REVIEW | Reviewed by: Erona Diane Hill

My heart was pounding to near bursting at the end of this incredible, delicious, dreamy, and creamy story!

Charlotte Stein is a master of her craft. She is in a league all her own...All of us should applaud her and her prowess!

From the get-go, I was held entranced. Each word spoke to me and while there was the story-within-a-story bit, I found myself falling into this profound world and desperately wanting to be Allie. Allie is our heroine, she writes erotica when she thinks no one is looking, but someone has been looking. His name is Cameron and I could melt in his embrace. I have to say, Cameron is my favorite character created by Charlotte Stein. I have read her catalog, but Cameron makes me want to wrap my arms around him and never let go! He is the perfect blend of Beta and Alpha--not too demanding that he's frightening and not too submissive that I get bored. He's just...perfect. I fell hard for him because of his prim demeanor that hid devilishly wicked thoughts and I could practically see his beautiful smile that concealed just a bit of vulnerability.

Even though this story was rich in decadent eroticism, the descriptions of the characters were vivid and well-written. This line had me laughing out loud because it was so Cameron that I knew him instantly, "Sometimes it’s hard to read the expressions on his immense face, and it gets even harder when he says things like this: ‘You look really ... great. Just very ... pleasant.’ Because I remember how often he used to search for words, as though the real, normal, sane ones eluded him. As though his brain constantly wanted to put weird things in there instead, like You look really pumpkin. Just very bicycle." Too funny, Ms. Stein. And then Charlotte Stein would add odd descriptive factors that made the scene even more detailed like this one, "and then I have to tell them why and it’s mortifying somehow. It’s like pulling a tooth. Out of my vagina." "Sadly, this only puts me in the spotlight again. I feel like a Vegas stripper, only without the feathers. Or spangly nipple-covers. Or skin." "Sue me – he’s just interrupted the most profound moment of my life. I think I had minor embolism, I epiphanied so hard." I absolutely adore Ms. Stein's unique writing voice. Her descriptions, her plots, her characters are all their own. She had made them real to me and as a reader, that is what I crave from my fiction.

Bravo, Charlotte Stein, Bravo! Now I just have to find a few dozen roses to throw on the stage...

Telling Tales read like the precursors to a lot of Stein's later, groundbreaking work.

There were bits of Addicted in there with four friends who are budding authors writing and sharing smut. My issue with Addicted was that the stories being written were hotter than the story being told. Same issue here. There were shades of Make Me with college friends, all secretly attracted to each other, being thrown together and sexy times ensue. There were even tidbits of Control, which I adore, with one of the males craving submission. My issue? I didn't identify with or empathize with any of the characters, which made me not care for their plights or the story. I kept putting it down -even in the middle of thrusting and orgasming.

This is a re-release. Its not the first re-release of Stein's work. As a fan of Stein's later work, where her characters, even when young, have a maturity alongside her writing, I say stop re-releasing. If I read this first, instead of Control or Sheltered, with characters I still think about today, I may not have picked up another work.

Charlotte Stein is known for her deeply emotional, unbarred perspective on passion and sex in her stories. TELLING TALES follows along the same lines. Allie and a few of her college friends go to visit a mansion that their good professor passed on to them in his will. Reunited with her friends puts her in close proximity to the man she has always held a torch for.

Wade is the kind of man who always gets what he wants. But perhaps it is a case of being too late when Allie finds an interest in Cam, their other mutual friend in this book. Shy and more conservative, Cam lies on the opposite spectrum in terms of personality with Wade. There is also Kitty, Allie's other best friend whose name is well-suited to her as she is quite the sex kitten. As sexual tension mount between the four of them and there are many experimental moments shared, there is the question of who Allie will pick between Wade and Cam.

In a seductive exploration with multiple partners, Stein doesn't hold back when she pens her sex scenes. Each scene explores Allie's emotions and conflicts while also delivering intensely erotic passion that will make any reader blush.

TELLING TALES has become one of my favourite stories from Charlotte Stein and definitely be one sitting on my keeper shelf for years to come.

Audio version.

This has been my week for former favourite author disappointment.

This story is exceedingly contrived.
Stein's other stories were always grounded in the plausible, the credible, the realistic. And I like realism in my Contemporary works. If I want Fantasy I'll select that genre.

The work is disgustingly meta.
Seriously, editors should tell writers tempted who take on this tactic to take a rest. Writing for writing sake about writing and having the writing reflect the writing immersed in the writing is lazy and silly, It is not clever. It is not cute. It just means that the writer is burnt out and needs a holiday.

This is porn with plot.
I don't like porn without plots. I prefer a story to ground the eroticism. Notwithstanding, porn without plot with a cursory "I love you" tacked on to the end is worse than just porn. Make no pretence, cater to no idea of 'girly' need. Just get on with it.

The internal rambling is out of control.
This is a signature of Stein's and usually the interior, manic contmeplations in her books are funny and inviting. They typically reflect those thoughts we all have but would never voice aloud and they are a relief to read as such. In this book it is way overdone. And it's not amusing.

The narrator was okay...her voice was a bit oldy/warbly/not sexy-ish...but she was a good reader and interpreter of the story.

There's more but blah...

One of my overall favorites. I've read it countless times! I love her descriptions that take place 'in the moment' and the stories that are tucked into the story are great, too. In fact - I wondered if her book Guarded was written with one of those concepts in mind. If she'd just take that little story that's tucked away in there and write it into it's own short people would love it :) With Stein there's no questioning her logic and reasoning when it comes to her premises. She's infallible.

Do you like your romance stories on the steamy side? Well, friend, this is the book for you.
Allie (whose POV feeds the book), Kitty, Cam, and Wade were friends in college. They loved to get together and tell sexy stories to each other. Their favorite place to do this was their professor’s mansion. Years later, the professor has died and left the house to them in his will, so they decide to gather once more. Not everyone thinks this is a good idea, including Allie, but off they go.
The stories Allie used to tell and write now embarrass her. She had a crush on Wade, but is he still the focus of her dreams? Only one way to find out, right? Hmm. Not so much, as the quartet experiments with various kinks and combinations of coupling.
Wade has changed. Or, maybe he was different from the way Allie imagined him. While Allie lacks the self-confidence it once appeared she had, Wade has his sexual identity well in hand, so to speak. It seems that Cam is more of a match for Allie, but is he repressed or is he, like Allie, simply embarrassed by what he imagined?
Kitty is the least observed character in the book, and perhaps that is because, despite one encounter together, Kitty and Allie simply aren’t a match. As far as same sex activity goes, Wade and Cam are more adventurous, but then again, when the four of them decide to experiment with a foursome, it’s hard to know who is attracted to whom and who is simply bi-curious.
There is humor (sex can often be very funny) and deeply rooted romance in this book. Well written and a fun book to read.

I have said it before and this story proves I am right... Charlotte Stein writes some messed up male characters who are so hot and sexy in their damage!
Oh, weird Cameron. I wanted him from the start. He is so damaged. And the more you learn about him the more damaged you realize he is and the sexier his needs get.
I usually read stories with virgin heroes, but Charlotte has shown me a guy doesn’t have to be a virgin to be desperate with desire. Her books are moving to the top of my “to read” list.
