Damian always thought being a firefighter should come with some hero cred. But running over a cute, nerdy civilian who’s in the act of rescuing a three-legged cat, and sending him to the hospital with a broken wrist? Not so heroic.
Getting hit by a truck isn’t necessarily so bad when it comes with a tall, broad-shouldered, smiling-eyed firefighter straight out of Peter’s fantasies. Although Damian’s straight. He has to be, because this is Peter’s life. And a guy that hot and sweet and funny wouldn’t be interested in a geeky twink with no game and a few extra pounds around the middle, anyway. He’s only hanging around to make sure Peter doesn’t sue.
Damian's determined to make amends—he feels awful, and more importantly, Peter's freaking adorable. Can Peter put his self-doubt in its place once and for all or will he let fear win out and lose the man of his dreams?
Need a Hand? is a 16k word standalone story that takes place in the same universe as The One Decent Thing and A Totally Platonic Thing. It was available several years ago as part of a multi-author giveaway, but it has been expanded and extensively rewritten.

Damian is 28 and she's a firefighter. He's not making a lot of money, and he's also working as a rent a handyman. Peter is somewhere in his 20s too. Peter was chasing a three-legged cat around a fire scene, because he'd been caring for the stray cat and wanted to make sure it was safe. And Peter ended up saving the cat but getting hit by Damian's fire truck and breaking his arm. Damian shows up at the hospital to apologize and butter Peter up so he doesn't sue. And he immediately finds himself distractingly attracted to Peter, who is a grumpy slightly pudgy nerd. Damian tries to hit on Peter a couple times, but Peter has low self-esteem and doesn't think Damian could possibly see anything in him, so it takes a few attempts.
This was extremely short. It was a bit less than 63 pages worth of story. I have to judge it according to Novella standards, because there just aren't enough pages for you to compare a novella and a book against the same standards. I really enjoyed it. There were so many funny and sweet moments, I had to hold myself back from quoting too many fav moments below. I really loved how Damian just was so mentally distracted by his crush on Peter and found everything endearing about him.
Some notable moments:
Tee hee, Damian comparing himself to Joe the goat fucker. "Damian was never, ever going to live this down. Like, he’d be ninety, and he’d still be the guy who ran over a nerdy civilian in Coke-bottle glasses who’d been in the act of rescuing a cat. A fucking three-legged cat. What was that joke about the guy who built the bar with his own hands, and laid all the bricks, and what have you, but no one called him Joe the brick mason? You fuck one goat… He’d be Damian the nerd-murderer. Forever. And it’d only been two weeks since he passed the engineer exam. Fuck his life."
"Okay. Peter. And if he was talking, that meant someone else was there to talk to. Fuck. Parents? Oh, Jesus. If they were anything like Damian’s overprotective mom and dad, they might not leave enough of him to bury. “Because they did surgery on your wrist this morning, dumbfuck.” Okay, probably not parents—Damian hoped so, anyway."
Aw, Damian gets butterflies about Peter, and thinks he's so cute. "A bolt thunked, the door swung open, and there, in a faded blue T-shirt and boxer-briefs with Sonic the Hedgehog on them, stood Peter. His hair stuck up in all directions, making him look a lot more like Sonic than Tom Holland right then, and his glasses hung slightly askew. The waistband of the underwear dug in just a little tiny bit, showing the slight chubbiness around Peter’s middle. He was so fucking cute Damian could hardly take it, and Damian’s chest had a weird, light bubble in the middle of it, a heady mix of surprise and relief and how the fuck did this happen."

**Note about spoilers: I like to comment on the plot of a book in reviews, so I almost always mark my reviews as containing spoilers. But I try to avoid spoiling the big dramatic moments! As a reader, I personally like to know what I'm getting into before I read a book so I know more about the content and if it's to my taste/mood, so I try to give that information in my reviews for myself when I'm considering rereading and also for other readers.

Damian Rossetti is a Santa Rafaela firefighter who arriving at the latest fire emergency hits a civilian with a fire rig. Civilian in question is Peter Parks, who instead of evacuating during a fire alarm, goes running around after a stray tree legged cat in the company parking lot only to end up running in front of a fire rig and ending up in a hospital with a dislocated shoulder and a broken wrist.
Peter has no plans on suing the fire department but Damian still goes to the hospital to apologize in person only to be chased away by Peter's scary twin sister Mary Jane. After Peter mopes around about never getting to talk with men like Damian, Mary Jane hires Damian as a handy man under false pretenses. When they discover they have been tricked by Mary Jane, Damian is overjoyed about getting another chance to talk to Peter, who he finds cute, but Peter does not believe Damian might be honestly interested in him because of his own deep sated insecurities. Even after Damian kisses Peter, Peter tells him to leave. They both mope around until Mary Jane intervenes one more time.
This was a short but quite frustrating story thanks to Peter's obstinate behavior and insistence on distrusting Damian's words and actions. The more Peter tried to push Damian away the less believable Damian's attraction to Peter seemed to be. Reading the outline, the story had the potential of being cute wish fulfillment fantasy staring a hunky firefighter and a shy nerd, but instead characters' action managed to destroy majority of the romance. After checking author's other works and realizing I have actually read two of their other stories in Santa Rafaela series my disappointment with this particular story started to make more sense.
I have featured Eliot Grayson's work on my blog before and many of them have found a place on my kindle but this is the first time I've actually had a chance(made time more precisely) to read the author. So glad I did and I look forward to checking out the author's backlist in 2025.
Need a Hand? is a fun, light-hearted, short novella that makes you smile and chuckle. Yes, perhaps Peter and Damian's tale might have been better had it been a full length novel but sometimes you don't need a lot to connect to characters, to enjoy a story, and Need a Hand? is just absolutely quite lovely as is. You understand Peter's insecurities even though you want to scream "you're perfect as you are" but there are times when characters need to see it from the others before they can believe it within. As for Damian? Well he has his own brand of insecurities that one can relate to and it's these attributes that make them a perfect fit.
I was looking for stories with some level of Halloween setting with no paranormal effects in a FB book rec group and the author rec'd this one saying the epilogue has mentions of the holiday. I'll admit I chose this story more on the length(or lack thereof) than the blurb but whatever brought me here I am just so glad I arrived. This story from the beginning just left me uplifted and a pleasant contrast from the spooky I've been reading and watching in October😉. When a book leaves the reader smiling I can't think of a better way to express this humorous gem.
From the moment this novella kicked off with the meet cute, I was completely taken with Damian and Peter. Something that Eliot Grayson does amazingly well in their novels - and, it turns out, their novellas - is creating really distinctive character voices, both in dialogue and in the MCs internal monologues. The conversations between characters and their internal thought streams had me giggling to myself and grinning like an idiot at my Kindle.
Even though this is a novella, even the side characters felt super real and fleshed out - would anyone else like a separate book about Peter’s twin? Or a story about Damian’s fire station coworkers?
Usually when I think of Eliot Grayson, their paranormal titles come to mind first but this novella was a really sweet reminder of how you can’t judge an author by their bestsellers - Eliot Grayson’s contemporaries are just as cute and addictive as any other genre they write in.

Peter Parks is a somewhat nerdy and clumsy fellow, but he’s determined to save the three-legged cat from a fire. When he attempts to chase the cat down, however, he runs right into the fire engine helmed by Damian, the sweetest firefighter. After hitting a civilian, Damian is afraid for his job — and legitimately sorry for the accident — so he goes to apologize to Peter. Damian is immediately captivated by Peter, but Peter’s insecurities in the face of a hot firefighter — and a meddling sister — complicate things.
But these two mange to navigate their issues and find common nerdy ground to share, and it’s delightful. This is a short read, but its sweetness is the perfect snack (especially if you need a break from some darker or heavier reads). Definitely recommend.
Need a Hand is a super sweet and short novella about Peter who was just trying to save his cat during a fire in his building and Damian, the firefighter who accidentally hits Peter with his fire truck while arriving at the scene of the fire.
Damian, hoping to avoid a lawsuit goes to the hospital the next day to apologize to Peter and finds he is attracted to him and they have a lot in common. Peter's sister Mary Jane is also at the hospital and isn't as forgiving as Peter.
Peter has trouble believing that Damian really likes him, but the men finally get together, with Mary Jane's help.
My only complaint was that this was too short. I wasn't ready to say goodbye to Peter and Damian and would have loved to see more of them together before the book ended.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
So how did you two meet?👬 He ran me over with the fire truck 🚒 while I tried to save a three legged cat!
Peter is a cinnamon roll twink with low self confidence as he had bad experiences with exes and hookups regarding his weight.
Damian is a gorgeous firefighter who is enamoured with Peter from the minute he laid eyes on the adorable twink but Peter thinks his advances are from guilt and a fear of being sued…
It is sweet how Damian perseveres to win over his stubborn crush by building up his self confidence and letting Peter see the real Damian who is in fact a geek under all that hotness!
A sweet, short funny read about acceptance and finding your other person in the most unexpected way!
I voluntarily received an ARC from Forward PR for my unbiased opinion of this book.
**3.5** Need a Hand is a shot, funny story with two men who come together completely by accident, literally. Damian never saw his day playing out by hitting a young man with the fire engine he is driving, who was in the process of rescuing a three-legged cat. Peter is adorable, nerdy and clearly finds Damian attractive, which is equally returned. Peter is his own worst enemy though when it comes to anything happening between them, making assumptions on what Damian thinks of his slightly larger body and nerdy ways. I love the banter they have about comics, Marvel and parallel universes. An interfering sister plays a big part in these two coming together, though she's not afraid to say what's on her mind when it comes to her brother being hit by a fire engine. It's a quick read that is quite lighthearted but has some self doubt, a protective sister and a very independent and abrasive alley cat. I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.
This is a sweet read of meeting under odd circumstances. Peter is trying to save a cat from a fire. Damian is a firefighter who was driving the rig when they were responding to the fire. Peter darted out in the road while Damian was on the same road. When Damian visited him in the hospital, there was great chemistry between them. A bit of misunderstandings later, they finally get together. Love Peter’s sister, Mary Jane. Great quick read with zero angst.
I think that this was a really well done short story. It was sweet and entertaining. I loved Damian and Peter. I loved getting into their minds. I liked the nerdiness of the men. It was rather refreshing to have two different people fall in love rather than two cookie cutter characters. i also loved Peter's sister Mar. She was so entertaining. I received a complimentary copy of this story and I freely left this review.
Need a Hand is a good novella that has a bit of an opposites attract feel to it, not to mention a very memorable meet-cute. I liked Damian and Peter and thought they made a cute couple.
The romance in Need a Hand moves a bit fast due to the length of the story, but it felt thoughtful, with a well-developed connection between the men that made a fun, enjoyable read. If you’re looking for a good, quick romance, this title is worth your attention.

This is a very enjoyable but, at times, frustrating novella. Mary is a crazy spitfire, Peter is so uncertain of himself he needs a shake up, and Damian needed to stand up for himself a bit more, after all it was Peter that dashed out without looking but Damian that gets all the blame. All that aside this was a nice, fun tale with two sweet but frustrating men that meet because of a three legged cat.
3.5 stars. This was a quick, cute read. I liked that one of the main characters was chubby. Not enough chubby folks in romance. And I liked that his love interest was into it with fetishizing. Add in a meet cute with a surly alley cat and you have a recipe for a fun little read.
Peter is so cute and cuddly. Well that is according to Damian. On one of his first times driving a fire truck, Damian accidentally runs into Peter, breaking his arm and dislocations his shoulder. The apology that Damian gives Peter comes out awkward because Damian finds Peter adorable and very sexy.
A cute, quick, hit fireman/nerd love story! Enjoy!
If you like spiderman references, nerdy himbos, and bamf sisters and cats, you'll love this. For such a short read it has shockingly amazing fleshed out characters. While it was a fast read, nothing felt weirdly paced or crunched. Really a great read with humor, spice, and a touch of angsty sweetness with a hot HEA
Sweet romance at its best. Take two nerds, one, a twink with love handles, the other a super fit firefighter, yes I know that one sounds like an oxymoron, but bear with me here, and you get a super sweet romance. Lovers of marvel comics are certainly going to appreciate this one. It’s sweet, funny and super hot.
Cody jumps in front of the fire truck Damian is driving to save a three-legged alley cat. An inauspicious beginning of an M+M Romance. Gays come in hulky packages as well as over-weight pansy nerds. The pair here do a typical mating dance before they get down to serious oral-genetial pursuits. No word on what happened to the cat.
Super short and sweet. I loved how horny both the soft nerd and the buff firefighter-who was blessedly also a huge nerd-were for Tom Holland and his famous Umbrella dance routine (and the little black corset he wore on stage.)
If you're looking for a short story to read that doesn't feel like you were cheated, then this is it, lol. It's a cute story of Damian and Peter's road to HEA. The way they meet is unconventional and painful, painfully embarrassing for Grady and just painful for Peter. But this leads to attraction, some miscommunication, self doubt, and finding true love. I do wish it was longer cause Damian and Peter were so cute and funny together, plus that sizzling chemistry was hot.
Nicely written, very sweet little contemporary romance that is feel good and quick. Great weekend reading with a coffee or tea when you need to wind down or cheer yourself up.
Short, cute. I don't remember any of these characters even being mentioned in the other two books, but that's okay. Also: tripod is absolutely a brilliant name for a three-legged cat.
