AN ARGUMENT THAT ‘RAISING THE BAR’ MEANS THAT IT REQUIRES MORE EFFORT
Author Ed Pinegar wrote in the Introduction to this 2003 book, “The purpose of missionary work is to bring souls to Christ… To prepare to do this requires effort. This book can help you ‘raise the bar’ in your level of worthiness and desire, helping you prepare well and become a pure disciple of Jesus Christ… President Ezra Taft Benson emphasized four things… to be a successful missionary… ‘First, the sacredness of saving souls and the importance of greatly increasing the number of convert baptisms. Second, the necessity of increasing your own personal faith in order that convert baptisms will increase in a significant and dramatic way. Third, the importance of missionaries … setting personal convert baptismal goals. Fourth, the urgency of being actively and productively engaged in member-missionary work in order that the Lord’s harvest may be accomplished.”
He explains, “Because we don’t always recognize that there are consequences of sin, many people mistakenly think they can go on a mission, no matter what they’ve done, if they just confess. Some will now be withheld from service because their sins are so grievous. This does not preclude them from being exalted or from being married in the temple. It merely means that at this time in their life the consequences of sin are very severe. (Pg. 30)
He asserts, “Sometimes missionaries say, ‘Well, I just don’t get an answer, President,’ or ‘My investigators just don’t get answers when they pray.’ Heavenly Father teaches us that we must study things out to know of their truthfulness; then we need to make a decision…” (Pg. 62)
He states, “Too many missionaries spend a great deal of their mission trying to … learn the necessary skills for teaching the gospel. These missionaries do great when they learn, but now the Lord has raised the bar. We need to be ready to hit the ground running when we enter the field. The Lord doesn’t want to hear His missionaries say, “If only I had known this before…’ He wants them to get to work and progress beyond what we now imagine.” (Pg. 75)
He notes, “Remember that before anyone we teach can sense the power and divinity of the Book of Mormon for themselves, they must sense it in us. We must delight in the word of God. We must love the Book of Mormon. We must feast on its words. We must be truly converted.” (Pg. 147)
