In which Joe R. Lansdale and Sam Kieth team-up to create a really shitty comic book. An anemic plot that exists solely to set up a lame set-piece featuring a golem fighting a vampire is pillowed by Lansdale's knack for throwaway smartass dialogue to the point that every speech bubble is insipid. This is paired with illustrations that demonstrate the artistic prowess of a bored high school student doodling during class instead of paying attention. Insults aside, I like Lansdale and I'm sure Keith's work is more enjoyable when he's involved on a project he actually cares about. As is, this serves as an appropriate parting between this reader and the largely disappointing 30 Days of Night franchise. The only thing I liked about this comic book was that the vampire villainess wore a wife beater.

There was a point in the early 1990’s when Joe R. Lansdale was known as much for his work in comics (particularly the Jonah Hex series) as his prose. This changed when his Hap and Leonard crime novels exploded in popularity and his historical novels like The Bottoms and Paradise Sky began winning major literary awards, but he still takes on comic projects from time to time.

In 2011, he was asked to contribute to the popular long-running 30 Days of Night series. The result was a self-contained 4-issue arc subtitled Night, Again, which was eventually collected together in an omnibus volume.

A group of survivors are fleeing Barrow, Alaska where the original vampire infestation broke out during the winter month with no sunlight. They join a colony of scientists at a climate research station where they must make a last stand. Fortunately, they discover a secret buried in the polar ice that could swing the odds in their favor.

I have never read any of the rest of the series. I picked this solely because of Lansdale’s name on the cover. I was extremely disappointed both in the hackneyed plot and the lack of any meaningful characterization. Every single turn of events was predictable, except the golem buried in the ice by Nazis. That twist was too silly to have seen coming.

I did enjoy Sam Keith’s artwork. It was highly stylized, moody, looked like watercolor paintings. It created the right sense of horror and dread. (Having said that, the flashback sequence in issue 2, where the survivors eat dead human bodies to survive, was drawn in a jarring cartoon style that did fit the rest of the series.)

I also have a complaint about the publishing format. Night, Again was once available in a single paperback volume (now out of print), but the only way to buy this on the Comixology platform is to purchase each issue individually, which results in four separate files on my Kindle Fire. This is an annoyance since this is really one novel and should be read as such.

I am a big fan of Texas story-teller Joe R. Lansdale, who has a real knack for creating fascinating characters, whip-smart snarky dialogue, and intriguing plots - - - none of which you will find in 30 DAYS OF NIGHT: NIGHT, AGAIN.
That doesn't mean that Lansdale isn't a decent writer for comics. It just doesn't work here. In truth, I haven't been that impressed with any of the 30 DAYS OF NIGHT sequels by different creative teams. Some concepts are better suited for a one-and-done. You can't deny the brilliance of the Steve Niles/Ben Templesmith original. That said, if you'd like to read some really good comics work from Joe R. Lansdale then check out the weird western Jonah Hex mini-series he did with the awesome Tim Truman from DC/Vertigo.
However, if you're in the mood for a good scary vampire tale since it's Halloween season (as I was) and you can be satisfied with that, then check this one out. It won't disappoint in that respect.
Sam Keith is also not at the top of his game here. While there are some moments of captivating art, there are too many sloppy scenes (especially the flashbacks, maybe amateurish on purpose) that look like unfinished sketches. In either case, if you're curious to check out Lansdale and Keith - - please don't start here. TWO AND ONE-HALF STARS.

I am a big fan of Lansdale, and at times of Sam Kieth as well. This was some of the better Sam Kieth artwork, but his work is so stylized I can see how some may not like it.

Overall the story was all over the place. It sort of started in the middle, and we never really find out exactly what happened in the beginning. There's also a new monster introduced that was haven't seen in the 30 Days of Night universe before.

I did like it, but it did feel a little haphazard, including the ending.

Everything intriguing about the original is missing here. The plot is bland and at times stupid. The characters were not likable. The inclusion of another supernatural element lessened the book. Sam Keith's art was juvenile and far from his best work. Overall, nothing to see here.

No es el mejor de la saga. El dibujo está bien, pero a veces es algo… chistoso y disuena del ambiente del momento. También no sé cómo sentirme acerca de ese agregado del golem de Praga.

What didnn't I like? Well... everything.
Maybe the script could have made a good novel but not a good comic book. Too short to install the settings and most of all, the characters (which you basically don't give a damn about) the script misses its aim. It could have in & six part story but not in 4.

But that's not even the worst. What little could have been salvaged is instantly put to a wreck by Sam Kieth's hideous art. It so intently takes the reader for an ass it is insulting. Everything (drawing, inking, narration) is on the level of a ten year old kid trying to make his first comic book. It clearly put an end to the possibility of enjoying an average scipt. Worse, it contributed to kill it.

I hope IDW fired the editor who dared publish such trash.

The 30 days series has its ups and downs. Here, we're so down it's dark and you can't breathe.

Haven't seen Sam Keith's artwork since The Maxx - years ago now. I wondered if he'd dropped out of comics altogether. Looks like his style here too, but I'm pretty convinced that he's upped his game and has extended his style. There's the usual scribble-y panels but there's also something cleaner - the unfocused images, and other panels of the humans dealing with this nightmare. His notes at the end are educational, and I see why he made the choices he did (though not all of them appeal to me).

As for the story, it seemed to flash by pretty quickly for an $18 book, and the climax battle or machinations leading thereto were pretty standard (with a few humourous touches to mix it up).

Probably no more than a decent entry into the series, not anything to write home about.

I like the 30 Days of Night series and I was excited to see an entry by Joe R. Landsdale, but this ended up being only sort of OK. I'm not sure if I missed a volume or if this intentionally started in the middle of the action, either way I felt a bit lost to who some of the characters were. A lot of them are going to die, but damn it my thought should be something other than "who was that?". Aside from that there is the whole element of the Golem, interesting in introducing something that can go toe to toe with the vampires, but overall it feels under utilized and I don't know how well I feel it fits in with the rest of the 30 Days canon, which is most vampires not affected by holy things. Overall, not bad, just some missed opportunities.

Let me first start off by saying that I do not know 30 Days of Night outside of the movies. However, I instantly became a fan of the movies and knew this was a series I would want to follow to get my vampire fix. And once I saw the new issue available on Net Galley, I was ecstatic to download it to my computer and fall in love with the comics just like I did with the movie. But to my surprise, after reading the comic (several times) I am left feeling underwhelmed and wondering what the heck is going on.

I love Sam Kieth, he is one of my favorite comic artists, his drawings-caricatures, and the way he compose the pages are really original. So, I was glad to see his art again.

The story in itself, is short, and right-to-the-point, the characters could be more interesting, but, you ended don't giving a fuck about them.

It feel like some flat vol., the thing that saves it from being bored and another-vol-of-30 DON, is the Sam's art.

So, if you are a Sam's fan, and already have mostly of his works, buy it ...

... If not, don't spend your money in this vol., there are other comics more interesting than this one.

This was a very solid story.

While it didn't elaborate on the vampire mythos as the previous installments did, this one introduced a more varied mythology to the vampiric world. I enjoyed the use of the golem, which is folklore not often used enough, and I liked how they tied it into the story.

I'm a bit sad that there isn't more to the series, as I think it would be interesting to see what happened to the golem after the story. Still, this felt like a very solid side-story and would certainly be good in written form.

Nice diversion, but now, back to work.

I'm a big fan of Sam Kieth and really wanted to like this latest iteration of the 30 Days world but there's just something missing here. Niles has created an interesting premise to pick up on but either the storytelling or the art (or possibly both) fall short of executing it in a really compelling way. With the big ending of this first volume I am curious to continue just to see what happens (I know the ultimate end of the story as it played out in the fabulous Criminal Macabre/30 Days crossover) but I'm not in any hurry.

I saw the movie and thought it was pretty good, definitely a look at the dark side of vampire lore. It felt like I realistic look at what it might be like to be a vampire, not so romantic after all. That being said...not a fan of the comic. Even knowing the storyline, I was confused. Good artwork, but disappointing otherwise.

Thanks to IDW Publishing and Net Galley for access.

The art kind of kills the book and the story gets too confusing to save it. As much as I love Joe Lansdale's other books such as his Conan book and Steve Niles/Templesmith's original 30 days of night this just falls flat. If you haven't read any of the other 30 days of night books check out the originals.

Partway through this I thought to myself "this art reminds me of Sam Kieth". And lo, it was Sam Kieth! The story falls into "vampire vs. human badassery" and not the "bloodthirsty creeping into town" vampire genre. As such it goes fast,is bloody in many ways other than vampires eating humans, and is entertaining.

So maybe I'm just immune to the horror genre, and vampires, and such, 'cause this was boring. Poorly written, predictable and unoriginal. Graphic style not my thing but looked good. Maybe the authors will write a better story when they graduate high school.

The story line with the golem is interesting, but it ended before it got started. I want my money back.

It was alright. Something different to read. It's nice that you can read these books without having read the pervious volumes, although if you are interested in the history and how things got started and you want answers to all your whys, then read the other ones. I just picked this one up and it's fine as a stand alone story.

The art could have been better.

Absolutely shocking, didn't like the artwork that goes cartoonist at times, the whole package has completely lost the essence of the 30 days of night saga and the story was equally as bad. New writer and new artist and man does it show.
