Date with Death

Rate this book
Take this soul, who seeks revenge
Bind him from his cruel intent
With this spark, consign his soul
To the haze of his own hell

As Piper and Leo contemplate parenthood, and Phoebe and Cole enjoy their engagement, Paige is feeling more of a push to find a significant other. In a moment of whimsy, she signs up for an online dating service. Needless to say, she soon finds herself flooded with eager responses. Almost every night she embarks on a new date that seems to lead nowhere -- despite the fact that Paige has a perfectly good time when she's out.

Or does she? Before long the sisters discover that Paige spends her "dates" in a catatonic trance -- she hasn't actually gone anywhere! Soon afterward her suitors are discovered to have committed evil acts. Paige is acting as a conduit for dark powers -- and soon she is projecting her energies onto her sisters. Will Piper and Phoebe be able to save her using only the Power of Two?

Piper has Leo. Phoebe has Cole. And Paige has no one. She feels like the fifth wheel on the wagon. Since Valentine’s Day is coming up, Paige decides to join an online dating service, hoping to find the right match for her. But there’s also a killing spree going on, where women get their hearts sliced out of their chests. The only thing the victims have in common? The online dating service Paige is using.

I’m not a fan of the romance genre, so the concept of this story didn’t really intrigue me all that much at first. But this story definitely managed to surprise me. First of all, because there’s not that much focus on the actual dating. And the lingering threat of the killings helps elevate the suspense of the few dating scenes. Second, because this story is surprisingly action-packed and full of twists and turns. This is quite an enjoyable little adventure for the Charmed Ones.

Note, Sept. 30, 2016 --I've just edited this review to correct a misspelled word.

This particular Charmed spin-off novel has a lot in common with the two I read earlier this year, and would probably appeal to the same readers. Unlike the authors of the other two, Elizabeth Lenhard gets no personal description at the end of this novel; but one can infer that she's probably, like them, a professional writer who takes on spin-off novels on contract. Again, this is competently-written, light supernatural adventure (there are three grisly deaths in the background, but they aren't directly described), with minimal bad language and no sex, which reproduces, in print form, much of the ambiance of the series itself. (The sisterly camaraderie which is a strong point there is so here as well.) This one takes place around mid-point in the series' story arc: the oldest sister Pru has been killed in action, replaced by youngest half-sister Paige; Phoebe is engaged to the now-human Cole (okay, series fans know how that ultimately turned out! :-( ), and Leo and Piper are talking about conceiving a child, but haven't yet. Leo plays a rather larger role in this novel than he does in Beware What You Wish, but the solution to the "monster of the week" jeopardy here is achieved by the sisters' own efforts.

Lenhard writes with a brisk narrative pace and a leavening of wry humor. The background story of the martyrdom of St. Catherine here is drawn from actual Christian lore (though the story itself may be only a legend), and the persecuting emperor Maxentius was an actual person. His subsequent transformation to demon status, however, is the author's invention, as is any demonic connection with Lupercalis. (The latter, though, is an actual Roman holiday falling around Valentine's Day, and the name is thought to have a lupine connection.) A problem that could be raised with Lenhard's plotting is that the method of time travel used here does not stand examination very well, and the discovery of the St. Catherine connection seems too convenient. More importantly, the demon's program of mayhem starts strong but then fizzles; for much of the tale, he seems to be just marking time and not mounting as aggressive a threat to anybody as he could. But the affinity of an incorporeal demon for a cyberpace environment is an interesting touch, and the use of an Internet dating service as the backdrop for nefarious supernatural menace is an effective metaphor for the very real fears that real-life singles like Paige often actually have in that kind of setting. Indeed, Lenhard, while not an ultra-deep writer, uses her tale to make wholesome points about relationships that the readers absorb painlessly with the story.

This was a better novelization than the last one I read, but I found the cutesy nicknames Paige used annoying. I also thought it took the Paige way too long to figure out who the demon was, the name was so obvious. The ending was good and wrapped everything up well.

Interesting story. One I could not remember. The name of the demon made it a bit too clear to my liking to know who it was but fine some people need that.

Again a few sister mix ups but since it was two times I can forgive them. Three characters with a P in the same room is asking for trouble.

My book cover theory died a bit in this part since it was Paige and not Phoebe. This is the first one that really didn't make sense so on to continue this theory for the other covers.

I thought that this book was really enjoyable. I loved all the different types of dates and how Piper, Phoebe and Paige were handling things. One of my favorite Charmed books so far and Paige is getting better and better then she ever was in the tv series.

The blurb doesn't even match the story - and what a lacklustre story it is.

Fair warning the back of this book lies. Page is never in a catatonic State and she also actually goes on the dates. Where the back of the book says she doesn't. I just read the book she goes on the dates. Her sisters and Leo are also watching her on stakeout on a few of these so I know she goes on these dates whereas the back of the book says she doesn't go anywhere. Also the author of this book must never have seen a charmed episode that had their cat in it because she keeps calling it Sweetie where the cat's name as we know is Kit.

So Paige has this dating service called kiss.com that she's using. Well after each of these dates they are like really boring and they leave her dizzy. The bad thing is her dates end up going on to hurt other women by just ripping their hearts out. Which of course is very bad cuz they have to figure out what in the world is going on.

After an incident at P3 where one of pages former dates who is actually one of Phoebe's exes Josh shows up getting this other guy away from page they end up thinking he's a demon but when they try to take him out Phoebe can't. He got away but they tracked him to his place where they just soon discover that he's actually possessed he's not the actual demon. The actual demon is Lupercalus.

Which he is using Paige to try and get back for centuries ago when he was turned down by another woman named Catherine back in ancient Egypt or Rome times. Leo and Cole are also possessed along with all these other guys that page went on these dates with who show up. The sisters have to work quick which after a little issues Piper being knocked out one of them they take out the guy. And it was actually hilarious what they locked him in because you can't really get rid of him so they got creative. The only thing I see going wrong with this is they put him in something that could shatter.

At the end of the book is Valentine's Day which is the whole reason Paige had started this obsession with dating because she didn't have a Valentine's Day guy. Go the day off she's off to see the vet. I really did like Cole and Leo cuz they were in this book more TV also dealt with another issue she was having with that ex of hers Josh because she never understood why he just gave her the cold shoulder. She realizes something that she definitely wants Cole.

Besides those three issues I had this was so good.

I was at my favorite used goods store the other day and I spotted a small collection of novels based on the TV show Charmed. How could I say no to trying a couple? Maybe the "power of three" forced me to buy them. This novel is really a fun read. What I appreciated is that all the loose ends were accounted for in a clever way. This novel features Piper, Phoebe, and Paige, and it shows us what all can go wrong for these witches when Valentine's Day is looming on the horizon. Miss the Charmed show? Then grab this book for an all new rom-com adventure!

My third Charmed book and this one was really good! The Leo/Piper and Cole/Phoebe subplots are super cute. Paige is super funny. Lupercalus was a great villain. It takes advantage of not having to stick to a budget by changing sceneries to interesting places. I was entertained. I did notice the author changed Kit's name to Sweetie. I was hurt.

This novel is entertaining, and mostly true to the characters. The action part of the plot feels like an actual episode of Charmed, which is good... but the book itself is underdeveloped in a lot of ways. The plot is rushed, and the romance aspect is flimsy at best. As far as Charmed tie-ins, this is middle of the pack.

As someone who was obsessed with charmed growing up I was a little disappointed by the inconsistencies. Like why is Kit called Sweetie in this?? Since when can they do memory spells? I wanted it to gel better with the series but it's okay.

The story was okay but the author didn’t seem to get the characters. Also their familiar’s name was Kit not Sweetie.

Ah un roman dérivé de 2003 avec des incohérences narratives, du français international pas comprenable, des blagues un peu racistes et grossophobe, et du slut-shaming, qu'est ce qu'on ferait sans?

So I ended October with this one but had so many Trunk or Treats to go to and it wiped me out for reviewing but all charged up on my daughter's Halloween candy so here I go...

Date With Death is Season 4 Charmed with Phoebe and Cole engaged and also Cole is now completely human because Phoebe took away his demon powers to save him. Piper and Leo are in their wanting to have kids phase of marriage but Piper feels the magic has gone out of it.

Piper wants to spice up her love life with Leo but by making him take quizzes and trying to get to her man's heart through his stomach with new recipes besides meatloaf. Youngest sister Paige is really in the dumps because it is almost Valentine's Day and she has no one to spend it with.

Phoebe meets up with some girls she went to college with and one named Carla says she is trying out a new dating website called Kiss.com to find a date. Phoebe mentions this to Paige and soon she is signed up and getting many replies to her profile after a brief hesitation of landing duds.

Soon, Paige has the next few days crammed with dates for breakfast, lunch, coffee and dinner nut isn't happy to find out that one of them happens to be an ex-boyfriend of Phoebe named Josh. Paige wants to cancel because you do not date a sister's ex the same as you don't do to your BFF'S old B.F.

Phoebe says she broke up with Josh and now she is engaged to Cole but you can tell there is some weirdness because even though it was five years ago, the thing with Josh ended because he got distant and Phoebe had no choice.

So Paige's date with Josh doesn't go so well because despite him being very cute...there is no connection with Josh. The date is boring and then the next one...and the next one until Paige goes out the following night to dinner with a lawyer named Max Wolf.

Paige is smitten with Max and they have a very good date so she is ready to cancel all the other dates but her sisters tell her not to rush with a few of their comments creating some tension with Leo and Cole. There isn't time to dwell on that when Phoebe brushes up against Paige's Palm Pilot and has a vision of a young blonde woman being attacked by her date and then another unseen face from behind and then one final girl...all in pools of their own blood.

Calling Darryl Morris, he heads over because he was just about to call the sister himself. Last night, three young women were murdered with their hearts pulled out of their chests and one of them...was Carla. Phoebe is shaken but she informs the whole group that Carla was the one who told her about Kiss.com so it is possible that one of Paige's dates...is a warlock or a demon.

The back of the book describes things a little different but what it does spoil that I can't ignore is that Paige is being used as a conduit for demonic forces that end up possessing her dates. She is a Charmed One after all so being a powerful witch a demon got at her through...the...dating...website!

That's when things get a little sticky because it looks like the demon is going to infect Leo and Cole as well...

The resolution is a bit outrageous even for Charmed standards on the show and in these books but everything works out as the couples solve some of their issues and Paige is still looking for love but is no worse for wear.

Romance isn't easy when you're Charmed and Date With Death is a fun read filled with fantastical escape.

Interesting plot.
Not at all my favourite one. There were a few problems.
A lot of the times these books just don’t show properly the right personalities of the sisters and other characters, they act way to cringe or immature.
I definitely try to picture them like the characters in the show but I get taken out of it when they say things the character wouldn’t say.
E.g in this one Cole refers to Paige as ‘sis’. When on earth would he ever show that affection towards Paige 😂

Also where did Sweetie come from? They should keep Kit if they wanted to have the girls still have a familiar.

The blurb didn’t match what happened.

The mention of the seven deadly sins episode was incorrectly referenced as Piper didn’t have greed she had gluttony 🤷🏻‍♀️

Not to mention the massive amounts of fat shaming to start with..

Was just a very weird one not a fan 😂 but it’s still comforting being in the Charmed world.

I think that this book was really cool. The only thing that I didn't like was the fact that Paige was so slow and didn't realize that her boyfriend was a demon. She got her sisters in a lot of danger because of that. But, of course, they are the Charmed Ones and found a way to vanquish the demon and get themselves out of danger. It was quite an adventure and I loved it.
