The Beginning of the Middle.

Jack Sigler, call sign King, is the leader of the Chess Team. Chesspocalypse!

Five members plus Deep Blue, the mysterious 6th member, are on a case in Ethiopia. They are investigating a strange situation in a cave where seventeen scientists entered, but only one has returned.

They aren’t the only people who are interested in solving the mystery of what’s going on in the cave. It is an ancient elephant graveyard, full of tusks, but how much are they worth?

Will the Chess Team solve the mystery to this problem and get the answers they need?

কাহিনি সংক্ষেপঃ আফার, ইথিওপিয়া। আবিস্কৃত হয়েছে হাতিদের এক সুবিশাল সমাধি গুহা। একদল গবেষক ঢুকলেন সেই গুহায়। কিন্তু এমন কিছু অনাকাঙ্ক্ষিত ঘটনা ঘটলো যে গবেষকদের মধ্য থেকে মাত্র একজন সেখান থেকে বেরিয়ে আসতে পারলো। মেয়েটার নাম ড. ফেলিস কার্টার। মোজেস সেলাসি নামের এক ইথিওপিয়ান শ্রমিক উদ্ধার করলো ফেলিসকে, আর সাক্ষী হয়েছিলো ভয়ঙ্কর এক দৃশ্যের।

সি.ডি.সি. (দ্য সেন্টার্স ফর ডিজিড কন্ট্রোল অ্যান্ড প্রিভেনশন) থেকে ডাকা হলো ড. সারা ফগকে। উদ্ধারকৃত ফেলিস তখন একটা ফ্যাসিলিটিতে শুয়ে আছে একটা প্রাচীণ মাথার খুলিকে আঁকড়ে ধরে৷ ভাইরাস জনিত কোন আশঙ্কা? সেটা না হলে সি.ডি.সি.-কে এসবে ইনভলভ করা হবে কেন? বুঝে উঠতে পারলোনা ড. সারা। তাকে সাহায্য কর‍তে লাগলো অ্যাম্বাসির অ্যাটাশে ম্যাক্স ফুলব্রাইট। কিন্তু অজ্ঞাত এক শত্রুপক্ষের হামলা ধেয়ে এলো ওদের দিকে। খোয়া গেলো রহস্যময় প্রাচীণ খুলিটা।

কিং, ওরফে জ্যাক সিগলার হলো আমেরিকার সবচেয়ে গোপন প্রতিরক্ষা বাহিনী কলসাইনের একজন সদস্য। প্রেমিকা ড. সারা ফগের ডাকে তাকেও পাড়ি জমাতে হলো ইথিওপিয়ায়। তার ওপরেও হামলা হলো। একটা গোষ্ঠী আফারের গুহায় পাওয়া কোন একটা ভাইরাসকে কাজে লাগিয়ে মারাত্মক জীবানু অস্ত্র তৈরির পাঁয়তারা করছে। আর তাদের এক উদ্দেশ্য সফল কর‍তে চাইলে পথ থেকে সরিয়ে দিতে হবে জ্যাক, সারা ও ফেলিসকে।

হাতির সমাধিস্থল থেকে ফেরার পর থেকেই ফেলিসের মাথার মধ্যে ঘোরাফেরা করেন 'আদিমাতা'। কে তিনি? কেন ফেলিসের অঙ্গুলহেলনে মানুষ পরিণত হচ্ছে বোধশক্তিহীন জোম্বিতে? কি এমন ভাইরাস, যা একেবারে পাল্টে দিচ্ছে একজন সুস্থ সবল মানুষকে? মানবসভ্যতার বিকাশের সাথেও এই ভাইরাসের সম্পর্ক অস্বীকার করার অবস্থা রইলোনা।

ইথিওপিয়াতে ঘটে যাওয়া ঘটনাগুলো দূর থেকে নিয়ন্ত্রণ করে চলেছে এক কৃত্রিম বুদ্ধিমত্তা। সুপারকম্পিউটার ব্রেইনস্টর্ম বেশ ভালোই বোঝে নিজের কাজ। কিং-এর যুদ্ধটা সহজ ছিলোনা। সেটা আরো জটিল আকার ধারণ করলো ব্রেইনস্টর্মের কারণে। পুরো পৃথিবীকে হুমকির হাত থেকে রক্ষা করতে ঝুঁকি যে ওকে নিতেই হবে।


পাঠ প্রতিক্রিয়াঃ 'কলসাইনঃ কিং' জেরেমি রবিনসনের 'ব্রেইনস্টর্ম ট্রিলোজি'-এর প্রথম বই। কলসাইন সিরিজেরও প্রথম বই এটা। এই সিরিজের এখনো পর্যন্ত মোট আটটা বই প্রকাশিত হয়েছে। এগুলোর মধ্যে বাংলায় অনূদিত হয়েছে দুটো। অ্যাডভেঞ্চার, থ্রিলার আর সায়েন্স ফিকশনের মিশেলে লেখা 'কলসাইনঃ কিং'-এ জেরেমি রবিনসনের সহলেখক হিসেবে ছিলেন শন এলিস।

বইটার কাহিনি শুরু হয়েছে একটা বিশাল হাতির কারবালার (সমাধিস্থল) ভেতরে ঘটে যাওয়া কিছু ব্যাখ্যাতীত ঘটনার মধ্য দিয়ে। এরপর কাহিনিতে আসে অজানা একটা ভাইরাস, যা সুস্থ মানুষকে বোধশক্তিহীন জোম্বিতে পরিণত করে। কিছু ক্ষমতালিপ্সু মানুষ, যারা এটাকে কাজে লাগিয়ে অনেক বড় কোন লক্ষ্য অর্জন করতে চায়। দৃশ্যপটে প্রায় শুরু থেকেই কিং, ওরফে জ্যাক সিগলারের উপস্থিতি ছিলো। আর এই ধরণের থ্রিলারের ক্ষেত্রে যা হয়, অ্যাকশন সিকোয়েন্সের কোন কমতি ছিলোনা। মোটামুটি ভালোই লেগেছে সব মিলে৷ উপভোগ্য ছিলো।

পাঠকপ্রিয় অনুবাদক মোঃ ফুয়াদ আল ফিদাহ'র রূপান্তর বরাবরের মতোই চমৎকার লেগেছে। যথারীতি সুখপাঠ্য ছিলো রূপান্তর। বইটা পড়তে গিয়ে ঘটনাস্থলগুলোর একটা মানচিত্রের বড় অভাব বোধ করেছি। অবশ্য মূল নভেলাতেও সম্ভবত মানচিত্র ছিলোনা। থাকলে বাংলা রূপান্তরেও থাকতো। ইথিওপিয়ার নির্দিষ্ট এলাকাগুলোর একটা আউটলাইন সংযুক্ত থাকলে পাঠে আরো একটু সুবিধা পেতাম বলে মনে হয়েছে আমার কাছে।

ভুলভ্রান্তিও ছিলো কিছু 'কলসাইনঃ কিং'-এ। প্লেট হয়ে গেছে পেট, প্ল্যান হয়ে গেছে প্যান এই ধরণের মিসটেক ছিলো। আদারওয়াইজ বড় কোন ভুলভ্রান্তির দেখা পাইনি।

আদনান আহমেদ রিজনের করা প্রচ্ছদটা মোটামুটি ভালোই লেগেছে।

'কলসাইনঃ কিং' ই-বুক আকারে এনেছে বইটই (Boitoi) অ্যাপ। বইটা আপনারা পাবেন বইটই অ্যাপে নামমাত্র মূল্যে। Google Play Store-এ গিয়ে Boitoi লিখে সার্চ দিলেই অ্যাপটা পেয়ে যাবেন। সেখানে আরো অনেক বইয়ের সফটকপি পেয়ে যাবেন স্বল্পমূল্যে। তাই কেউ পিডিএফ চেয়ে লজ্জা দেবেননা। পাঠ শুভ হোক।

ধাঁই ধাঁই অ্যাকশন। এমনিতে এ ধরনের বই পড়তে এখন আর ভাল লাগে না। তবে অনেকদিন পর অল্প সময়ের জন্য পড়ে মন্দ লাগেনি। ওয়ান-টাইম রিড। সময়টা ভালই কেটেছে।

স্যুডোসায়েন্স বা শেইডি কিছুকে বিজ্ঞান হিসেবে দেখানোটা এখন ট্রেন্ড। সেজন্য একটু বিরক্ত লাগতেও পারে কারো। তবে এই ব্যাপারগুলো উপভোগ করি আমি। সায়েন্স-ফ্যান্টাসি? বলা যায়!

চেস টিমের কনসেপ্টটা ভাল লেগেছে বিশেষভাবে।
অনুবাদ চমৎকার। পড়ে আরাম লাগল।

Another roller coaster thriller with only one member of the Chess team! Excellent.

I've read the first two Chess Team/Jack Sigler books in hardcover from the library. I've got book three on reserve, but in the meantime, I found out that the author is co-writing a series of novellas, self-published through ebook venues (I bought mine through Smashwords).

One thing I found out quickly is that there are a few spoilers for book three of the series, but nothing that would ruin reading that book when I get it, and you don't have to have read all three books before reading this novella, although I would recommend at least reading up to book two, since one of the main characters was introduced in that volume.

Jack Sigler, code-named King in the Chess Team, gets a cryptic text from his girlfriend (the above mentioned character), a scientist with the CDC who has been sent to Africa, and the message hints she could use some back-up. He quickly follows, getting there just as she attacked at a hospital and is rescued by unknown forces.

This leads to a mysterious elephant graveyard, what might be a civilization-threatening virus, and a villain that pushed my credulity until I got to literally the last page of the story.

That last page really perked me up and made me look forward to Callsign Queen, the next book in the six parts.

In some ways it is a very standard thriller, much like the novels, with a slightly bizarre twist, but they are fun reads. I will be buying the entire series as it becomes available on Smashwords.

Originally read in June 2012: A great short installment in the Chess Team series!!! It's whetting the appetite for the next full length novel!


February 2014: The second time through for this book, except this time via audiobook. The story was great as previously mentioned, but I need to add that the narration was fantastic. Jeffrey Kafer did a great job, spoke at the perfect pace (I can't stand it when they talk too slow), and he kept the different voices to a minimum. I'm not usually a big fan of audiobooks because I feel the story loses momentum when you have a male narrator pretending to be a woman, and vice versa. But all Mr. Kafer does is lower his voice an octave or two to speak the female parts, and it doesn't distract you from the story. I thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook and will be continuing with the others in the series.

As you are reading it you can definitely tell it was not written entirely by Jeremy Robinson. In fact, my guess is that all the novellas are primarily written by the co-author and Jeremy does some tweaking and editing to keep things consistent with the Chess Team universe. That being said, it was still a very well written and interesting story. Longer than I expected and quite a few twists and turns for a novella. If you are a fan of the Chess Team it is definitely worth your time.

Callsign King Book 1 is a nice little episode featuring King from Jeremy Robinson's Chess Team books, first in a series of novellas following the previous books-Prime, Pulse, Instinct, and Threshold, in that order.
King runs into new and old friends and enemies and takes on a global threat, all in a novella! This was a fun run, and now I need to read the next one, Callsign Queen! Read this book!

The existence of the Elephant Graveyard - a lost and hidden place where the great land animals collectively gather when they have reached their end - permeates much of the legends told by hunters and adventurers as they gather around their fires in the dark of night, fires that ward off the terrors of the night and embolden even the weakest to tales of hidden treasure that echo avarice and greed. Legends that suddenly become reality in the light of day and could signal the end of civilization with but a simple thought. It's this discovery the throws "disease detective" Sara Fogg of the CDC into a confrontation with mysterious figures, giant corporate entities, and a hidden entity that may, or may not, be human in nature. Red Flags waving and her sixth, seventh, and eighth sense tingling like crazy, Sara reaches out to her boyfriend Jack Sigler, black ops operative and the man bearing the KING designation as head of the clandestine CHESS TEAM.

It doesn't take Jack long to, once more, find himself in the middle of death, treachery, and global spanning conspiracies that would like to see and end to his interference and are willing to do anything it takes to make that happen and further their plans for control of...well... everything. Problem is, that may already have happened.

Jeremy Robinson is quickly becoming the new master of all things adventurey and thrillery (yes...I made those up...but you know you understand!!!) throwing his signature heroes of the enigmatic CHESS TEAM into this, the first story in what is designated the CHESSPOCALYPSE (I DID NOT make up that series title...LOL). Robinson has a firm grip on modern terminology and has done extensive research into the world of secret organizations and their machinations (that may reflect a time spent amongst those types...but...he's not talking).

This is the first book in this extensive maxi series set within the world of the CHESS TEAM and Jack Sigler that began in the novel PULSE and, as of this review, has seen 7 subsequent books, as well as a prequel novel PRIME. Readers can quickly jump into this adventure and move swiftly through it quickly identifying with the main characters without having read through the previous establishing stories...but...then...that would spoil ALL the fun. Go read them all.

First, let me clear that I haven't enjoyed the book a lot because of my pre-reading list of the same era! Robinson forces me to remind James Rollins and Matthew Reilly, but they are far better than him, specially Rollins.

Robinson's skillful storytelling, reminiscent of Rollins and Reilly, propels readers through a roller-coaster of suspense, intrigue, and heart-pounding action. The novel follows the adventures of King, a charismatic fighter pilot and member of the Chess Team, as he faces off against a formidable enemy with global consequences. This high-stakes premise, a hallmark of both Rollins and Reilly's work, sets the stage for a thrilling narrative that keeps readers engaged from start to finish.

The echoes of Rollins and Reilly are evident in the meticulous research that grounds "Callsign King" in a compelling blend of science, history, and speculation. Much like Rollins, Robinson weaves real-world elements into his fiction, lending an air of authenticity to the fantastical scenarios. Similarly, the breakneck pacing and relentless action scenes, reminiscent of Reilly's novels, ensure that readers are constantly on the edge of their seats.

While Robinson pays homage to the influences of Rollins and Reilly, he also injects his own unique voice and imagination into the narrative. অনেক দিন বই পড়ার বাইরে রয়েছি। তবে মাঝে মাঝে মধ্যে দুই একটা পড়ার চেষ্টা করছি। ভাবছিলাম কি বই পড়ে আবার পড়ায় ফেরা যায়। ভাবতে ভাবতে থ্রিলার আর হরর নিয়ে বেশ আগ্রহ জন্মায়। তাই সার্চ করে এই বইটি বের করা।

মোঃ ফুয়াদ আল ফিদা এর অনুবাদ "কলসাইনঃকিং"। যেহেতু আমি ওনার আগে অনেক গুলো অনুবাদ পড়েছি। তাই ভাবলাম এই ছোট বইটি পড়ে দেখি। বইটি আসলে কোন জনরাতে ফেলব তা নিয়ে আমি নিজেও কিছুটা দ্বিধা দ্বন্দের ভেতর রয়েছি। এটি স্পাই, সাই-ফাই, থ্রিলার-এডভেঞ্চার এর মধ্যে রাখা যায়।

কাহিনী শুরু হয় এক মরু উপত্যকায়। যেখানে একদল প্রত্নত্ত্ববিদ খোজ পায় অসাধারণ এক আবিস্কারের। যেই আবিস্কার মানব সভ্যতার সাথে শুরু থেকে জড়িত রয়েছে। হয়ত এই আবিস্কার মানবসভ্যতা আরও এগিয়ে নিয়ে যাবে নয়ত সব কিছু ধ্বংস করে দেবে। এমনই এক দোলা চালে শুরু হয় বইটির কাহিনী।

আমি আগে জেরমি রবিনসনের কোন বই পড়িনি। তাই আগে থেকে কোন আমার সেভাবে কোন কিছু আশা ছিল না বইটি নিয়ে। আমি শুরু করার পর ধীরে ধীরে বইটি প্রবেশ করি। যখন আমি কাহিনীর ভেতর চলে গিয়েছি তখন আসলে বইটি রেখে দিতে পারছিলাম না। বইটি আমি অফিসে বসে শেষ করতে চেয়েও পারিনি। কাজের ফাকে ফাকে বইটি পড়েছি।

বেশ দ্রুত গতির একটি বই। তবে কাহিনী এত দ্রুত এগিয়েছে যে বইটির সাথে পাঠকের তাল মেলাতে একটু হলেও সময় লাগবে। কারণ প্রতিটি ধাপ কাহিনীর মোড় ঘুরিয়ে দিয়েছে। সেই সাথে গল্পের চরিত্রদের মধ্যের সব কিছুকে ধীরে ধীরে খোলস থেকে বের করা হয়েছে।

বইটি শেষের দিকে বেশ উত্তেজনাপূর্ন হলেও মনে হয়েছে আরও কিছুটা যুক্ত করা যেত। এত দ্রুত ভাবে থ্রিলার শেষ করাটা যেন একটু খাপছাড়া ভাব চলে এসেছে। মুলত আমি ভাবেছিলাম বইটি আরও কিছুটা বড় হবে। কিন্তু কাহিনী কোথাও পরে যায়নি বা ধীর হয়নি। লেখক কাহিনীকে পৃথিবীর আদি থেকে বর্তমানের সংযোগ বেশ সুন্দর ভাবে তুলে ধরেছেন।

যদিও বইটি হয়ত আর একটু বিস্তারিত ভাবে সাজালে ভাল লাগত। এতে করে পাঠক কাহিনীর সাথে নিজেকে আরও বেশি সম্পৃক্ত করতে পারত।

সব কিছু মিলিয়ে বলতে চাই, বইটি থ্রিলার প্রেমীদের একটা সুন্দর সময় উপহার দেবে। ধন্যবাদ।

গার্লফ্রেন্ড সারা ফগের কাছ থেকে একটা রহস্যময় মেসেজ এসেছে জ্যাক সিগলারের ফোনে। মেসেজ পেয়েই জ্যাক ছুটলো ইথিওপিয়া। ওকে ঠেকাতে চারজন মার্সেনারি পাঠানো হলো। আর ভুলটা হলো এখানেই। পাঠানো উচিৎ ছিলো চল্লিশজন। আমেরিকার সবচেয়ে গোপন আর বিপদজনক সংগঠন হলো চেজ টিম ( ডেল্টা ফোর্স টাইপ )। দাবার ঘুটির নামানুসারে যার সদস্যদের কোড নেম রাখা হয়। আর জ্যাক হলো এই টিমের হেড যার কোড নেম কিং। এয়ার পোর্ট থেকে ট্যাক্সি নিয়ে হাসপাতালে যাবার পথে হামলা হলো কিং এর উপর। আর এখান থেকেই শুরু হয় মাথানষ্ট তারছিড়া সব এ্যাকশনের। এদিকে হাসপাতালে আক্রান্ত হয় সারা ফগ। এদিকে আবার সারার রোগী ফেলিস কার্টার বহন করে চলছে এক মহামারীর জীবাণু। যে ভাবেই হোক সারাকে এর একটা সমাধান বের করতে হবে। ফেলিসকে কারা যেনো কিডন্যাপ করতে চায়। কিন্তু এর জন্য কিং নামের এক বিশাল বাধা তাদের অতিক্রম করতে হবে। আর এসবের সাথে আদ্দিস আবাবার ইউ এস মিলিটারী এ্যাটাশে ফুলব্রাইটের সম্পর্ক কি? এদিকে আবার ইথিওপিয়ার দুর্গম এক পাহাড়ি গুহায় আবিষ্কার হয় হস্তী সম্প্রদায়ের এক বিশাল গোরস্থান। সেখানে যা আইভরি আছে তা দিয়ে ইথিওপিয়া বিশাল পরিমানে ধনী হতে পারব���। কিন্তু এই গোরস্থানের সাথে এলিসের রোগের একটা সম্পর্ক আছে। এতোসব সমস্যা সমাধানের ভার এসে পড়ে চেজ টিমের উপর।
চেজ টিম সিরিজের সাব সিরিজ ব্রেইনস্টর্ম ট্রিলজির প্রথম বই এটা। অনেকটাই সিগমা ফোর্সের আদলে এর কাহিনী গড়ে উঠেছে। বাট সিগমা ফোর্সে যেমন সাইন্টিফিক কচকচানি বেশি আর এ্যাকশন কম এখানে ঠিক তার উল্টো। এ্যাকশন বেশি আর সাইন্টিফিক কচকচানি কম। কাহিনী এগিয়েছে রোলার কোস্টার গতিতে। আর ফুয়াদ আল ফিদা ভাইয়ের চমৎকার একটা অনুবাদ হলো এই বই।

At 188 pages this was pretty short fast paced kinda read. The problem I had with this was partly because of the info dumping that my tired brain couldn't handle and partly because I felt that putting the proper names of each and every piece of weaponry was a bit too on the nose. I mean I can't remember all those initially names nor do I think they particularly add anything to the story when used in conjunction with their other names. Apart from that while I have read the full length novels of the Chess team it was ages ago and I don't remember much about those books. So reading this was meant to be something of a re introduction to the characters and the story line. The problem is the characters aren't particularly fleshed out and Sigler comes off a bit too unbelievable.

It was just alright for me. 2.5 stars.

প্লটঃ ইথিয়োপিয়ার এক গুহায় আবিষ্কৃত হলো এক বিশাল হাতির গোরস্থান। সেখানে রয়েছে প্রচুর পরিমানে হাতির দাঁত। তবে হাতির দাঁত ছাড়াও রহস্যময় কিছু একটা রয়েছে সেই গুহায়। পনেরোজন বিজ্ঞানী ঢুকলেন সেখানে। বেরিয়ে এলেন মাত্র একজন। বাকি বিজ্ঞানীরা কোথায় গেল? আর সেই গুহায় কি এমন আছে যার জন্য উধাও হয়ে গেল এতগুলো মানুষ?


★রিভিউঃ জেরেমি রবিনসনের লেখা চেস টিম এডভেঞ্চার সিরিজের সাব সিরিজ হলো "চেসপোক্যালিপ্স"। এই চেসপোক্যালিপ্স সিরিজেরই প্রথম নভেলা "কিং"। বিজ্ঞান,মিথ ও একশনের মিশেলে নভেলার গল্প গড়ে উঠেছে। বেশ ইন্টারেস্টিং প্লট। তবে কাহিনী অনেক বেশি গতিশীল,সে তুলনায় বর্ননা খুবই কম। একের পর এক ঘটনা ঘটে যাচ্ছে আর একশন হয়েই যাচ্ছে। প্রথমদিকের গল্পের গতির সাথে তাল মেলাতে একটু সমস্যা হলেও পরে এক নিঃশ্বাসে পড়ে শেষ করে ফেলেছি নভেলাটা। এক্সপেক্টেশন অনেক বেশি ছিল বিধায় তেমন একটা ভালো লাগেনি। সব মিলিয়ে আমার কাছে মোটামুটি লেগেছে।

Not bad - just not good either

In short this story would probably read better as a comic book than a novella. When the main character is introduced to the reader his description is almost "cartoonish". In fact, the description made me think of a dark ops Bruce Wayne.

And the story only went downhill from there.

This comic book novella really wanted to be an action adventure story. Unfortunately, the action scenes didn't live up to that - They were seriously lacking (although, again, they may have been great in a comic book panel).

I'm afraid this was a very disappointing introduction to this series.

I've almost bucked this up to 4 stars. Several reasons for that. First, just glad they decided to publish these Chess Club Novellas. I also supported that by paying full price for this book. Second and third, the background story and villains are better than average for this type of thriller. Finally, though this wasn't as good as the full-length novels in the series, there's Jack Sigler. In case you didn't know it, he's the KING!

চমৎকার অনুবাদ কিন্তু এটা সত্য যে অরিজিনাল ইংরেজি ধারাবর্ননার থ্রিল ও সাস্পেন্স কিছুটা ম্লান হয়েছে। কাহিনী এই এক বইয়ে বেশি এগোতে পারেনি তবে ভাল টুইস্ট আছে সামনে বেশ বুঝা যাচ্ছে।

সায়েন্স ফিকশন-থ্রিলারের সংমিশ্রণ বলবো? অনেকটা এরকমই মনে করেছিলাম প্রথম দিকে, প্রথম দিকে গল্প কোনদিকে যাবে ঠাওর করতে একটু সমস্যা হলেও পরবর্তীতে তুমুল একশন একেবারে আটকে রেখেছিলো বইয়ের মাঝে!
