I read the 1966 Dutch edition of this book from my father's book shelf. It is a very disturbing factual account of Auswich, complete with witness accounts, and explanations. How the Nazis and Hitler convinced an entire nation to participate in genocide and plain torture is beyond belief. What is even more disturbing is that the world has not learned, and is even forgetting, this history.
What I found significant is that political and criminal prisoners, like murderers and rapists etc, from Germany were almost always assigned privileged tasks that included supervision of other working prisoners. They actually had survival rates at the camps compared to the majority who were lucky to survive 3 months of forced labour, sometimes bare foot in cold mud and rain, windy environs.
Reading about this systematic exploitation and murder makes the average pig farm or caged chicken farm akin to holiday resorts, as most animal farms actually feed and house their animals..
This book is not for the faint of heart and certainly not suitable for people who already have nightmares...
