Kathleen Findlay is married to a cad, her mother is driving her crazy and her life is falling apart. Then her uncle dies, leaving her the family’s Revolutionary-era home and, she believes, an escape from her chaotic marriage. But one afternoon, while searching for a rake, she discovers a man in her garden shed — and a free fall through the centuries. As her life spins wildly out of control, Kathleen finds her heart and in the process, her own place in time.
Who would have thought that this little unassuming freebie with the pleasant looking but otherwise generic cover would house such a wonderful read! Several passages literally took my breath away with the stunning impact of its words. This is one I'll read again.
I can’t praise this novel enough! It has all the elements that inspire me: time travel, discreet romance, mystery, and Revolutionary War trivia. I have always been a history buff, so I enjoyed this sweet novel. It’s the story of a modern-day woman, Kathleen, who falls into a relationship with Robert, a man from the Revolutionary War Era. They sort through dysfunctional relationships on both sides, cultural differences, and various mysteries.
Ms. Truscott superbly blends light humor and history. The reader is educated in an entertaining way. I wish all history lessons were so fascinating! I particularly enjoyed exploring the general differences between impoverished eighteenth-century urban society and today’s world.
Another high point of the book is the characterizations. They couldn’t have been more believable. I could even picture how the characters would act in a given real-life circumstance. In fact, they were so real I found myself imagining myself in conversation with them.
All in all, I would recommend this book to any lovers of light-hearted romance and history. I have already downloaded the sequel, Nick of Time.
so far I am LOVING this book! It's right down my alley with historic value mixed in with a budding romance. Pulled it as one of many free-kindle-books and I'm so glad I picked to read it first!
Just finished the book and LOVE LOVE LOVED IT!
This is my favorite kind of read - time travel period piece with tons of interesting history built into the plot!
I'm a huge fan of fictional period pieces that I learn in the process of enjoying a love story intertwined between centuries. This one delivers on all levels!
For another much loved "time travel star crossed lovers" read, you should check out the OUTLANDER series written by Diana Gabaldon. I still miss Jamie and Claire. There are 7 volumes in the series, and I devoured them all!
I love, love, love this book. I have read several books with time travel elements in it and past one particular series, it is at the very top of my list. I cannot speak enough about how well the author pulled off the plot and had me believing in it, hook, line, and sinker. I was on the edge of my seat to reach the ending. The romance was fabulous. Never in my thoughts have a fictional couple more needed to be together than Kathy Lee and Robert. I simply could not put this book down. The dialogue was funny and quirky and so believable. There were a few minor editing problems, but I see those in most books nowadays. This is a simply fabulous read; I cannot recommend it highly enough.
What a delightful book. A mystery to unravel, a heroine you really cared about and a hero to touch your heart, and a love story to heal so many wounds. I was especially taken with the idea that a man from 1777 traveled to the 21st century instead of the usual where the heroine falls back in time armed with all kinds of knowledge that the world she lands in doesn't have access to. This was a great story with good pacing, humor and real people to cheer for. I look forward to Ms Truscott's next book.
As an author who loves the Revolutionary War era, I am often discouraged by editors and agents who feel that this period in time is not popular. I wish there were more romance, mystery and historicals set in this time of our American History. Perhaps with the advent of more self published books, there will be more variety for all of us, especially those who love romance but are tired of the narrow focus on Civil War, Regency and medieval historicals. I'm sure they will never go out of style, and I can understand a publisher's desire to stick with what they know sells, but great stories abound in our own country in times other than the Civil War and I look forward to seeing more of them.
I was craving a time travel story and found this on Amazon at a reduced Kindle price. The reviews for it were good, so I tried it.
It was okay, but almost more of a romance than a time travel, which wasn't what I wanted. There were so many frustrating things about it regarding time travel and the lack of curiosity in the main character. For example, the time traveler and the lady go to the public library to research time travel on the internet and yet, never think to look up the dude or what happened in his family after he left. Some of it would most likely be documented.
She in general seemed very uninterested in his life in the 1700's. The traveler was interested in modern things, but seemed to pick up on modern technologies way too fast. I mean, my parents can't even figure out how to work their cell phone and this guy from the 1700's can easily drive a car and work other technologies.
And there are tons and tons of typos in the Kindle version. Well, not misspellings, but words left out. There were some paragraphs that could not make sense read as is. But, you could kind of figure out what was missing.
I need some good time travel books. I found a list on here and will be checking some of those out.
A time travel story where the person travels from the past to the present. Very enjoyable read. By the last third I was very fond of the two main characters and I felt that the characterizations were authentic. The author hit her stride in the last 50 pages.
Such a great book. The idea is pretty familiar but the difference is that typically the heroine of the story is flung back in time to find her hero. In Truscott's book it is the hero who is flung forward in time from the late 1700s to the present. This creates many interesting and amusing senarios with Kathleen trying to explain modern inventions and conveniences to Robert.
Another aspect I loved is that from the start of their encounter there weren't sparks flying between our characters. They were comrades in arms (or rather as victims to time travel), friends and then their romantic relationship blossomed. It was a slow process but didn't lack for other entertaining parts to the story as they are plagued by the idea that Robert didn't "travel" alone, Kathleen's wayward husband and helping Robert learn enough about modern times to blend in should his visit be more permanent.
The conflict from the story comes from the husband Kathleen wants rid of and from Roberts past and iffy memory.
Despite the typos in the the text the book was well worth reading and one I think would capture the imagination of time travel book lovers including the Outlander fans of the world.
I've always loved stories about time-travel. Something about the idea of travelling through time really fires my imagination. I've had the pleasure of reading some well-written stories along this theme lately, and this book is definitely among them. To be honest the story starts a little slow. I was just starting to wonder if this book was really for me. Then the inciting moment happened and from that moment, the book became a joy to read. Deborah Truscott clearly had a lot of fun writing this story of a British soldier from the 17th century who suddenly finds himself thrust into the 21st century. As a Brit myself, I especially enjoyed his reaction on hearing that America had won the war of Independence and his refusal to see the Revolution as anything more than a rebellion. The story zips along to a very satisfying conclusion. This book is a must-read for time-travel fans.
This book was free for the Kindle so I grabbed it and read it in a night. I didn't realize it was a 'romance', which I detest. Fortunately this isn't terribly heavy on it but even so it certainly didn't need what it had. I enjoyed the book to a point: a lot of historical references and descriptions. It was drawn out in quite a few scenes, filling space needlessly, and in some parts the language was out of place. One scene they would be talking like laymen, the next they would be using technical jargon. Also the likelihood that a man of Robert's awesomeness (being such a wonderful gentleman and all) would take a married woman to bed is just ...disgusting. Perhaps I should give it two stars. The more I reflect on the book, I only liked some of it and skimmed way too much.
Kathy Lee is in an unhappy marriage. With the death of an uncle she inherits a house. Robert is a British revolutionary officer who falls through a rip in time and lands on her door step. Robert is a wonderful character, humorous and interesting. Kathy Lee needed to man up a bit and make a decision for herself. Good story...had some intrigue and some mystery. The ending was a bit predicable but was happy!
This was an excellent book, I couldn't put it down because I ouldn't wait to see what happened next. I would recommend this book to any one who wants an excellent read. I look forward to reading more of this authors work.
This was a Kindle freebie so I tend to read a lot of these. Most are not the best, but this was really a great read. Quirky-but really enjoyed this book. Would recommend this to others
This book was simply wonderful. Plenty of twists and turns. I was on the edge of my seat not knowing how it would end!!!! I truly give it four and a half stars!!!!!!!! Wonderful book!!!!!!
I had started reading this book over a year ago but then put it down for some reason. I had not gotten very far into it at the time - only to the point where Kathy Lee first finds a British soldier from 1777 standing (very much alive) in the garden shed of the old house she has just inherited from an uncle, and despite believing him quite mad, brings him into her house for a cup of tea.
When I picked it up again recently, I began back at the same page and now the story quickly engaged me. It then captivated me so much that I couldn't wait to continue reading (which I usually do only on my lunch breaks and before bed).
Here are some musings about it (SPOILERS ahead):
There was what I thought of as a "Twilight" (the book) moment when Kathy Lee is on the beach alone late at night and is surrounded by a group of drunken men. The difference is that although Col. Upton appears and confronts them, he by himself, unlike Edward the vampire (don't judge me! lol), would have been unable to save her - or himself. I started to see a few other "Twilight" parallels as well.
I also wondered that the Colonel would agree to leave the site where he first appeared, despite the possible pursuing danger. It seemed to me that he'd want to remain near the "portal" as his only possible hope to return to his own time.
About 2/3 of the way through, there began to appear what seemed to me to be indications of the book's ending - plot giveaways. Kathy Lee, the narrator, said things like "when I think back on that time I can still feel his arms around me", or "I can still recall so clearly how he..." This spoiled things for me and I again put the book down - though only for several days this time. I decided to keep reading even though having what I perceived as the ending revealed so early in the piece was very disappointing. When reading a romance / mystery such as this, one wants to entertain all the possibilities - he leaves, he stays, she leaves with him, who knows? I didn't want to know yet!
I still wanted to know how he left, however, and when they finally returned to the house and the shed where he'd first appeared, I knew something would happen to return the Colonel to his own time, but not how. Then the first completely unforeseeable twist burst on the scene: I would never in a million years have expected (suspected?) the third person who had been sort of (and also literally) around all the time and was now revealed as an essential player.
And WOW - the continued, 'what-the-hell!' yet believable (in a time travel-believing way, that is) twists in the very last chapters take you on a walloping emotional rollercoaster ride - I went from hating the story's developments to absolutely loving it. The twists are artfully and amazingly crafted to spin you round just when you think you have it figured out.
In a first for me, on finishing the book I was so spun out and amazed by the twists and reveals that I immediately started re-reading it!
I really want to give this book 3 1/2 stars. I enjoyed this book . It was pretty interesting from the beginning and continued to hold my interest throughout the story. I thought the author did a good job with the relationship between Kathy Lee and Robert. There was definitely a discernible chemistry between them. I didn't really like the foreshadowing that took place a few times in the novel. In a way, it took away my enjoyment of the story, since I was under the impression that it would not end happily. There were several instances where there were typos and incorrect words used. This kind of poor editing really takes away from the flow of the story as the reader has to stop and think about what word was supposed to be used instead of what was printed. And for that I took away 1/2 star. I hope the editing has improved in the subsequent books in this series if I decide to read them.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Not a fan of this kind of book because it was interesting up until the end. I enjoyed the concept of time travel, and characters were well developed, but the end seemed to be too rushed, and when I found out there were three more books in the series, I thought I had read about theses characters enough. I am sure it will be a perfect fit for some readers, so I rated it a 3. Read it and judge for yourself whether or not you choose to move on to the next book.
Time travel is always interesting. It's not possible to cover everything the time traveler needs to know to survive in the new time. Seems that Robert is a quick learner as in about a week he's comfortable living in the 20th century. Needless to say, it was a good story and now I have to read the sequel ;)
I’m reading through books that have been patiently waiting on my Kindle for years. I love a good time-travel story, and I really enjoyed the twist on time travel in this little book. It turns out to be the first in a set of four-book series, and I read the generous 12-chapter sample of the second book. I’d like to finish out the story someday!
I liked this book as it combined history and time travel. Some of it was kinda unbelievable; such as the time traveler Robert being able to grasp living in the 21st century so easily (driving), however it was entertaining. I also like the way it came about - in a garden shed! An added plus was the fact that it was close to home and places I am familiar with.
A great change of pace for me from my normal murder/mystery/mayhem reads. Charming and entertaining while a little far fetched, but like John Carter books minus the aliens, acceptable far fetchedness. Now, I'll see if the author has another winner with a follow-up; In The Nick (Times Series Book 2).
This is more of a 3.5 star. I rounded down. As the title and synopsis suggests, there is time travel, which requires a suspension of belief. But some of the reactions of the main characters were completely unbelievable, and I really struggled with that. Overall, I did enjoy the historical aspects and the romance.
I was surprised how much I enjoyed this book. I've always enjoyed time-travel books, and this one didn't disappoint at all. The dialog was good, story moved along at a good pace and the characters were interesting and well-developed.
I like it a lot! The characters were easy to get to know, and I soon felt like I was in the room with them. The young girl on the run, has quite a story to tell. And, sadly, it probably happens more than we know. You can't go wrong with this book! Enjoy!
I love the idea that time travel is possible, but we humans have not figured out the mathematical equations to make it happen. Out of Time is an easy pleasure to read. Intrigue and romance, with a healthy dose of science-(for now)-fiction.
Ms. Truscott has a deceptively casual writing style that is actually carefully constructed to convey the nuances of the plot. I absolutely loved this book. Starting the sequel tonight! I highly recommend!!!
I enjoyed reading this book. Easy read. A few things were a little “unbelievable” but then it is about time travel! I felt like the ending was hurried but I did enjoy the book!
I had this in my library and decided to read it again. I had no recollection of this story. It was like a fresh read. That being said, it was an interesting take on a time travel romance with a nice happy ending.
