Abby Clark, vegetarian, punk rock singer gets kicked off the band tour bus in the middle of nowhere. With nothing but a talent for cooking and the singing voice of an angel, she manages to disturb a very cranky, cold-hearted bear, um, Baer.
Joe Baer, a sexy Wyoming beef rancher. He has a ranch mortgage that’s due, and a past that even he never suspected.
Snow, tractors, country superstars, an unforgettable rodeo, and a tornado named Abby, will bring these "baers" out of hibernation.
Fortunately for readers my characters lives are much more interesting than mine. Although, like the characters in my books, I have had a few tractor incidents in my life, and a nasty encounter with a bull, and there was that little tiny problem with the fireplace - but the house is still standing - most of it!
Abby Clark finds herself way out of her element in Wyoming after having a fight with a lead band member and being left to trudge through the snow to find shelter in the small town. The McIvey's, owners of the diner she wanders into take her under their wing and give her a job as a cook. This book had me laughing at all the mishaps that seem to follow that poor girl. It seems she can't get a break, from burning things down, to driving a tractor into a pond. The one thing she has going for her is that she can sing, but even that is not helpful because she has terrible stage fright.
When Joe Baer meets the purple haired punk rock city girl, the first thing he feels is dislike. On the brink of losing his family ranch because of a woman, the last thing on his mind is any type of attraction.
Ms. McMaken brings these two polar opposites, he's a cattle rancher, she's a vegetarian, he's a cowboy, she's a rocker, he's country, she's city, but they have an instant chemistry and a lot in common one they begin to get to know each other.
A last curve ball comes and both of their lives are impacted in a way that will change their destiny, I could not put the book down at this point because I had to see how they would come through. And wow, the twists and turns come to a smooth ending that made me smile. Great read!!
Abby Clark is my kind of girl. Punk rocker (I used to be), purple hair (my favorite color) and a vegetarian ( Not for me). She is... or should I say WAS the back up singer in a Punk group until she was unceremoniously dumped off the tour bus in the sticks in Wyoming. Armed with only her orange colored stiletto pumps and a frown, she makes her way to a mom and pop diner where she is taken in and becomes the cook due to her wicked cooking skills. By the way, being a vegetarian in a cattle raising community has got to cause issues for Abby.
Enter Joe Baer, super sexy rancher with a bad attitude. From minute one Abby rubs him the wrong way... or does she? Joe is about to lose his ranch to his nemesis and he is understandably angry about it. On top of that he does not trust a female as far as he can throw them due to his evil ex. Every single time Joe and Abby come into contact with each other leads to a mishap of epic proportions.
One evening at an open mic night that Abby attends with her new friends she is pushed to enter the contest to win some cash for her singing skills. When the all who hear her are enthralled another door opens with the possibility for Abby to make it big in the world of country music. Does she really want to leave her new happier life and the budding relationship with Joe to become a country star? Will the gruff city city with a potty mouth and the handsome cattle-rancher overcome their differences in time to realize that they are meant to be together? Oh come on... you didn't really think I was going to tell you did you?
I really liked this story! Linda McMaken has a winner with the Baer Truth and I cannot wait to read the second book of this trilogy, the Baer Necessities which will be out this coming May. Linda knows how to pair humor and the seriousness of the story to make an awesome read. This complete New York suburbanite went all out country girl for The Baer Truth!
Want to laugh, smile, cry a little and sigh happily a lot? Then you need to read the debut novel by Linda McMaken, The Baer Truth.
I love an "opposites attract" story and this one delivers. Abby and Joe are nothing alike, but when they get together, be it to love, fight, or just share the same page, the sparks fly! The writing flows well. Once I started this book, I couldn't put it down. I had to know what would happen and how much Abby would manage to get under his skin. I loved the sprinkle of mystery and the loads of laughter in these pages, too.
Abby is a back-up singer. She's used to being in the back, but dancing to her own tune. She's not going to fall for a...cowboy. I almost fell out of my seat. How could she not? I loved how Ms. McMaken worked out the details. Abby is strong and carefree. I thought about her long after I closed the book.
Then there's Joe. Tall, yummy and wearing faded jeans and cowboy boots. Who could ask for more? Not me. I loved his slow but sure attitude and his frustration with Abby. I could feel the attraction even when he wasn't sure he could love a woman like her. The combination of Abby and Joe is sparkling and I'm glad I got to read this first installment.
If you want a book with an accident prone ex-rocker, a sexy cowboy and a little intrigue, look no further. Baer Truth is the book for you!
Abby Clark is a punk rock back-up singer with what is sure to be the worst luck ever. After being dropped into the middle of nowhere, Wyoming, with no money and no clothes, Abby takes a job as a ranch cook to earn enough cash to make it back to L.A. Even though she's experiencing the biggest culture shock of her life, she never once thought she'd grow to love the people who accepted her into their world, despite her clueless and clumsy ways. Now if only she could get the grouchy Joe Baer to feel the same for her as the rest of the townspeople.
Debut author Linda McMaken shines with her contemporary romance set in the plains of Wyoming, where the snow falls harder than a cowboy off a bull. Abby and Joe are the very definition of "opposites attract", with Abby as the inept vegetarian, and Joe the brooding cowboy. The chemistry between them starts as a slow flame that gradually builds up to a four-alarm fire of passion, making the progress of their relationship more believable. The pacing of the story is top-notch, and there is an abundance of conflict, which will keep readers turning the page. As the first book in the Three Baers series, Baer Truth is as clever as its title, with Joe Baer starring as the hero that is just right for Abby.

With its Wyoming backdrop this funny little western romance with its lovable cast of characters was a pleasant read.
Abby Clark, backup singer in a punk rock band, with her purple hair get thrown off the tour bus in the middle of winter in Wyoming when she knees the lead singer when he gets a little to fresh. After making her way to a diner its not long before the town rallies around her. Abby provided much of the humor in the book as she is a klutz and gets herself into some situations.
One of the situations is rancher Joe Baer.. Joe lives up to his last name, he is usually in a bear of a mood. He’s on the verge of losing the one that he loves most in the world, his family’s ranch. These two have quite a few run ins before they give in and admit there attraction.
Its not all roses afterwards either. Lots of forces and circumstances trying to pull them apart..
The Baer Truth is one of those delightful reads you finish and then set on that special shelf that holds the books you intend to read again. The story gives you a hero and a heroine who are down on their luck and a twosome you can really root for. Mix in a fast-paced story line, liberally doused with humor and animation, and you have the recipe for success. I'm a huge fan of slapstick, and experts have often said slapstick only works on film, and it loses its punch in the written word. Ms. McMaken not only makes her slapstick work, she does it with skill and finesse. Many authors have made me smile over their stories, but only three authors have made me laugh out loud and laugh really hard -- Jennifer Cruzie, Janet Evanovich, and Linda McMaken. The fun was over way too soon, but luckily Ms. McMaken wove threads of two more Baer stories -- and Baer brothers -- into the Baer Truth and will keep us coming back for more. What a fabulous ride!
Abby Clark finds herself dumped into the middle of a Wyoming snow storm. So what does a vegetarian with the voice of an angel and the attitude of a Marine do? She finds her way into McIvey's Cafe and runs smack into a job as a cook for a bunch of meat eating ranch hands.
Joe Baer is in no mood - for anything - especially the calamity ridden Abby but there she is strutting, in orange stilettos no less, through every aspect of his life. What's a cowboy to do?
The story flowed beautifully with memorable characters on a collision course with love. There is plenty of humor and action (loved the rodeo scene). McMaken writes well and delivers a great story. I look forward to the next two additions to the Baer trilogy.
I loved this book! Opposites attract but sometimes you wonder how two people who are so very different will make it work. Abby, a vegetarian punk rock female singer and Joe, a meat eating cattle rancher seem an unlikely pairing but Linda McMaken makes it work. She pulls it off in a way that had me laughing, shedding a tear or two and wondering what would happen next while rooting for them all the way. And that made for a very good story.
I'd recommend this book to anyone who enjoys contemporary western romance. I'm looking forward to reading the second book of this trilogy, the Baer Necessities.
I love this book! It was laugh out loud funny in several parts it was tender and romantic at some parts and that little calf is just flat out adorable!! I loved the last scene of the book it totally seems like something that would happen in my life haha. I can't wait to read the next installment and follow the Baers!
Funny romance where country meets rocker and, of course, fall in love. I, which I rarely do while reading, laughed out loud. Some slapstick, good dialogue and good conflict wrapped into a great book. Now go forth and read.
Couldn't decide between three and four stars. This book wasn't perfect by any means. But, the characters were fun, there were emotional scenes I hadn't expected, and it took me away for just a bit. Guess that deserves four stars. :-)
The first of The Three Bears brings us into the world of Wyoming ranching and a modern day cowboy who will steal your heart. McMaken has fun with her characters, and I laughed out loud at some of the antics. You will enjoy this fun book with all its twists and turns to find and keep true love.
Oh my! I won this book and it is a must read. I could not put it down. The book is about Abby and Joe but I have to say Tessa will keep you in stitches. I can't wait to read the next book Baer Necessities
This was a fun book to read. It will keep you on the edge of your seat. Abby Clark made me laugh, and tugged at my heart. A well written story that keeps you turning pages.
I love the Baer brothers. This was a fun read. We're talking cowboys and bull riding here. We're talking a sweet, not so coordinated singing sweetheart here. What more can one ask for?
