Hiroya Oku (奥浩哉 Oku Hiroya, born September 16, 1967 in Fukuoka, Fukuoka) is a mangaka who is the creator of Gantz, Zero-One and HEN, all of which have been serialized in Young Jump. He has finished working on his most renowned manga, Gantz, which began in July 2000. His manga often contain explicit violence and gore, as well as sexual situations.
He won the second prize of the Youth Manga Awards in 1988, under the penname Yahiro Kuon.
He designed a character for Namco Bandai's Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 fighting game, Soulcalibur IV named Shura.
Did you just make kei lose all his points? I wonder if he will get them back when he kills this last alien. I found out while watching that Parasyte anime school scene, the whole scene is probably taken from gantz, maybe more then that maybe the whole idea came to the writer thanks to gantz! I mean aliens living with us, and now that we know that the game is on all the time if you don't kill the aliens, its like parasyte but since gantz is older then parasyte then i know who is mimicking the other.
Holy hell I forgot how good Gantz gets later. So spoilers for those who haven't read up until this point. Stop reading. Okay ready? Everyone is dead except Kei. He's trying to deal with it the best he could. Act like nothing matters to him. Except this time he's thrown into a hunt without ANY teammates. NO NEW ONES. He faces off against these ugly little dudes with big ass hands ready to whoop his ass. This volume breaks up that plus heading back to the real world. That's right this hunt is super short but action packed!
The second half involves Kei back in the real world pretty scared to go back into the world of Gantz. He just has had enough. Except these aliens or monsters aren't done with him yet. What happens when they cross into our world? OH SHIT!
What I liked: The fight between the new enemy is scary as hell. Kei is alone and we know this series doesn't mind killing off main characters. There's one moment in particular where I was like "Yep this is the end" but NOPE! We are saved. Also the classroom scene is...wow. I love the commentary on death too. Also the final few moments of this chapter are horrifying and wonderful.
What I didn't like. Some of the chapters feel so short because it just has Kei jumping from building to building. The first two chapters are insanely short and give off an impression this volume won't be that good.
Overall Gantz is hitting into high gear and you can see changes in Kei happening slowly. Sure he's still selfish prick but sometimes you see that shell break and see he cares. There's one moment too when he becomes a hero and it's pretty awesome. This is a high 4 out of 5 for me.
There is so much here to digest.. An Ugly short alien follows our dubious hero back into the real world looking for revenge for what was done to its compatriot. Well..who wouldn't? Is Kurono changing? His usual "don't care about anyone else" demeanor is not so front and center now..so maybe.
Good lord, and here I thought the Gantz manga could not possibly get any more violent, any more bloody, or any more terrifying. WRONG. I actually feel bad for Kurono; this really truly sucks like no other moment in Gantz so far. Plus, I think we've all learned a valuable lesson: . I'm sure Kurono won't forget that any time soon. Yikes. This series is really doing its best to earn its 'parental advisory' sticker!
Když je někdo chytrej a začne číst desátej díl, aniž by četl devítku a musí ho číst v angličtině. Bravo, Vendeo...
Synopsis: Gantz tells the story of a teenager named Kei Kurono, among others, who die but find themselves brought back in perfectly healthy bodies and forced to participate in a "game" where they must hunt down and kill aliens.
Review: I almost gave up on Gantz several times, but now that I've read it all the way to the end, I'm glad I stuck with it. The beginning is dragged down by repulsive and unlikable characters, a messily paced story, unnecessary sexualization and gratuitous violence without much substance. As it progresses, however, the character development becomes pretty incredible and the growing threat of the enemies feels truly well done. Once the real enemies are revealed, it's mind-blowing how the series had been secretly foreshadowing their arrival from the very beginning.
Although it takes a while, some really good characters are introduced later on in the series and they're the ones that made me want to read to the end. Some characters that were absolutely unbearable in the beginning became polar opposites of their original selves and even made me sympathize with them quite a bit. The protagonist Kei for example, I hated him with all my heart for the first third of the series, he became progressively more likable in the second third of the story and then he evolved into one of the most memorable, unlikely heroes I've ever seen in this storytelling medium throughout the final third. The last third of the series is unbelievably terrifying with some of the most gruesome and disgusting battle/survival scenes in the history of fiction. It's much more bearable and intense in the final third because this time the violence and horror is happening to people we actually care about instead of a bunch of unlikable nobodies.
The final third of the story is what made me feel so glad that I didn't give up on this series. It had me on the edge of my seat more times than I can recall. There are a ton of chapters but they're very short and full of action which makes the series a quick read despite having almost 400 chapters. So even though the first third of the story was kinda bad in my opinion, it doesn't last for long and the payoff that comes after it's over truly impressed me. It's a flawed, thrilling and horrifying action series that takes a while to kick off. When it finally kicks off, however, it kicks off extremely hard.

Although someone might say that this comic is always the same, it’s actually not. After the last battle, the main character has to come to terms with the new reality that all his friends, lovers, and random side characters have died alongside him.
He is left alone, and this has an impact on the outcome of his next fight against bizarre monsters, which he is sent to confront by a mysterious orb. Specifically, he doesn’t manage to defeat them all, and they decide to také revenge on him. For the first time, he faces an attack in his civilian life, specifically at high school.
On the other hand, it still remains the same raunchy and bloody fun.

Kurono is transported to his solo mission upon a rooftop. He discovers his targets, the Shorty Aliens, which are a group of aliens the size of children. With this knowledge, he is able to destroy all but one when they jump after him. The surviving alien communicates with him using telepathic abilities and tells him that he already knows all his moves. The alien destroys Kurono's black suit, but Kurono escapes and hides until his time runs out. Gantz tells him he failed, and reduces his score to zero. The surviving alien is furious about the death of his partners and swears to kill Kurono. The next time Kurono goes to his school, the alien appears in the body of a student and kills all of Kurono's classmates with the exception of Izumi and a girl named Tae Kojima. Kurono decides to fight against him. At the same time, a large number of policemen enter the school to battle the alien.
Kurono was assigned to a new mission; to kill a shorty alien. Only him was assigned to this new mission. Kurono managed to kill a group of the alien until the last one where he can't beat it. Kurono just runs for his live until the time is running out. Then, he got teleported back to the room. His point also got deducted as he can't complete the mission.
On the next day, Kurono is still traumatized with the incident. He played a game with his friends to date a girl, Tae. At the same time, the last shorty alien from Kurono's last mission disguised as human and come to his school to kill him. The alien brutally kill all of Kurono's classmates except Izumi and Tae.
This volume getting intense and interesting as the aliens officially show off their existence to the human.
Another game begins. This time our protagonist is the only player who has to face many strong aliens. He could not kill the last one as he was scared and the aliens were very strong. He lost his points and went back to zero. The next time he has to try that again.
Meanwhile, in the real life, that alien from the game comes as a duplicate of a student to kill our protagonist. How did he?
That alien killed everyone in that school. Our protagonist and a girl jumped from a building to the ground. They were not harmed by the ground impact??
So many things without answers...

Kei takes on Shorty alien and finds out what happens when he doesn't kill it in time.
I like the fact that Kei is mentally and emotionally breaking - it makes the whole 'death of friends' and 'forced to kill potentially innocent aliens' themes more real. Shorty alien's compatriot is not happy and decides to show up at Kei's school and slaughter. I must read the next book. If nothing else, Gantz excels at having cliffhangers.

The author actually managed to one-up the gore and slaughter from the temple fight, as the plot intensifies and things start hitting Kurono very close to home, so to speak. Kurono's state of mind is obviously still impacted by what has happened and he's actually slowing becoming a more stand-up guy.
The Gantz challenge continues the 9th edition of the story. The last remaining member of the team, Kei Kurono, is assigned a new challenge which he will have to go on his own. This one ends up on familiar ground but with new challenges.
As incredible and unsettling as the series had been up to this point, Volume 9 really ups the ante even further with some new revelations of this game of 'Gantz', and it makes it all somehow even more terrifying. I mean if you thought you'd come down from the slaughter of the previous mission...
This manga has no chill and it's not scared to destroy any glimpse of hope for the characters. The stakes are much higher, the tension is worse and the main character is completely helpless by this point
