Newly divorced Ellen was having trouble sleeping and her friend Alexandra told her, "Get a dog." She visited her local shelter and came home with Skip, a Golden Retriever with a damaged leg and an attitude. He was soon running her life, arranging her romances, and teaching her to laugh again. "Dogs don't talk," he told her, and he sounded exactly like the star of whatever movie she had watched the night before.
A Michigan native who studied writing in school, Donna first came to Vegas to make costumes and soon was weaving the stories she heard in the back of the girls' dressing room into her first novel. Now she is the author of The Alexandra Merritt Mysteries, which include 'The Last Two Aces in Las Vegas', 'The Las Vegas Desert Flower', 'The Las Vegas Special', 'Rough Ride in Vegas', 'M.I.A. Las Vegas' and 'The Las Vegas Sophisticate'. Her latest novel, 'The Vegas Tycoon' is also set in Las Vegas
Donna has written several other stand-alone novels, recent releases 'Kaleigh McKenna' and 'The Russell House', as well as 'Desperate Ambition', 'The Right Society', 'The Other Hand', 'Conversations with Skip', and an anthology, 'Killer Coffee and a Batch of Cookies'.
In addition to those stand-alones and others, Donna has a popular series of historical romances, 'The Manhattan Stories', and a series of female detective stories 'The Case Files of Molly Evers".
Her most popular novel, 'Maude', the story of her Grandmother, is a #1 best-seller on Amazon and spent 16 weeks on the Wall Street Journal's Top-10 list. 'Maude' is available as an audiobook, and is published in Italian, Russian and German. Donna is actively working on the screenplay for 'Maude'.
She has also written three screenplays, a stage play, poetry, short stories, and a children's story.
Donna lives in Henderson, Nevada, sharing her home with two cats and her dog, Abigale, all three shelter rescues. She has two children, a daughter in Las Vegas and a son in New York and a grandson who is the light of her life!
Donna still takes occasional classes at UNLV and at writer's conferences and is an active member of the Anthem Author's in Henderson, NV.
I loved this story from the opening line. So warm and inviting. And who could not love Skip. So easy to picture him smiling from ear to ear. What a personality. A lot of chuckling going on around here. Very heart warming.
Quick, enjoyable read by a writer whose style is always so comfortable that it feels like a conversation with an old friend than a book read alone. Thanks for the company...
Conversations with Skip is a delightful short romance novel for those who like dogs. I don’t necessarily like romances, but this one is light-hearted and focused on Skip’s incredible powers. It reminded me of the movie “Look Who’s Talking” but with a dog. As anyone who has owned and loved dogs will tell you, most dogs do seem to communicate with us so it’s fun to have Skip’s thoughts narrated.
Without giving away too many details, I can say that this is also a dog book for those who hate to see the dog die at the end.
I enjoyed reading the book with my dog “nephew” who is also a golden retriever, curled up against me.
I love this writer's style --just finished "Maude". A sweet dog story and romance. Couldn't ask for more. I would have given anything to talk with my Shepherd, Molly sometimes.
What would you do if your world was falling apart because the person you loved was no longer in your life? Maybe get an animal to fill the void and what if said animal spoke to you telepathically. Would you think you were crazy! This is a beautiful story about how two people are brought together by opening their hearts to rescued animals and the unexpected love they find. Wonderful inspirational story.
Too good to be so short. I would have paid a little more for a longer ending. Because you did this make a series of it. It woulda
This was too good so short. It ended too abruptly. PLEASE make a series out of it. I would re-read it as a series erwrite. with a longer ending and more clean ending like it was . It would have been a five star. Excuse the heading I was tired 3:00 am. Should have written this tomorrow.
While I liked this book I found it very jump at the end. My issue is you read and get this whole build up to what's going to be this magical ending and in about 150 words its all over. All in all it's a cute book and honestly who doesn't want their dog talking to them but the ending left something to be desired.
I am a dog owner and love animals. Our dog is also a member of the family. I have often wished he could talk to me and explain some of the expressions I see on his face.
This book is definitely for dog and cat lovers. I laugh, cried and thought of my precious dog the whole time I was reading it. I now bring home a doggie bag when I go out to eat!
Once again I couldn't put it down.well written.Great plot and everything I expected from Donna Maybry.it was sweet and tough at the same time.please write some more.I love your style.
Loved the easy going writing style of this book. Every true pet lover would enjoy it. You know how it's going to end but the road getting there is delightful. Made me want to take a trip to the animal shelter to find my match.
I loved this book. I'm an animal lover and this book appealed to me on that level and a few others. I'd recommend it if you're and animal lover and like romance and a happy ending
An engrossing romp - once you get beyond the abusive first husband. Those conversations she has with her dog add another dimension to the plot. Very enjoyable.
