After serving four years for a murder he didn’t commit, ex-cop River tries to avoid the human race. He runs street cons to make enough money for the dilapidated room he rents and the booze he drinks to stay numb. But when he tries to scam a gorgeous stranger who’s robbing an ATM, he soon realizes he’s tangled with the wrong man.

Braelan is the prince of the Seelie Fae, just arrived in the human realm to avoid becoming King. He also has unfinished business with his half-brother, who he owes a debt that may be impossible to repay. When a scruffy, unkempt human attempts to take the money he’s stealing, Braelan offers to pay him in exchange for spending the night with him--though he has no idea why he’s attracted to the man.

Despite himself, River agrees to one night only--and after the most incredible sex of his life, he realizes there’ll be no getting over Braelan anytime soon. But River doesn’t want to feel anything, and Braelan feels too much. While neither can deny what might be love, River’s past is coming back to haunt him...and it will drag Braelan down with him.

I decided to read book #3 soon as I finished book #2 because my brain was still fresh with the Fae background. I didn't remember anything from book #1 when I started book #2.

While I read a couple of reviews that said this book lack something that in the previous two books, I actually LOVE this one. In fact, it's my favorite among the three. My liking to the story comes from both Braelan and River as characters.

In book #2, Braelan is portrayed as this spoiled prince, who takes everything he is told blindly, ends up with torturing Uriskel with glee. In this book, he has grown up as a reformed Fae. He mellows a bit and he treats his new knowledge about having half brothers like a treasure-box-with-booby-trap. He's intrigued but he's very careful about it. So it's adorable to read his reaction when Cobalt and Uriskel take him in open arms.

And, I love River. To be accused as a murderer of his partner (who also his lover, but no one really know about it) and then survive his prison time when coming inside as a gay cop (which MUST be Hell) is incredible. I love his strength. I also love how River has his integrity; when he realizes what he is in. He doesn't really beg for Braelan to stay (Trystan does that to Uriskel in book #2), instead it's the other way around and I love that scene. Plus, River seems to keep Braelan grounded, which is nice.

My BIGGEST complaint will be the lack of motives from the murderer. Even until the book finished, I still don't get it. Why the hell the murderer seems so bent in killing Fae folks??

I do hope that there are still more stories in this realm, because it's quite riveting.

I always forget how much I am enjoying this series until I read another installment, and then am instantly hooked again. This was no exception. I really enjoyed seeing how far Braelan has come since the series began and how his relationship with his brothers has evolved. River's character was actually quite riveting, and even though I felt sympathy for his situation, I could not imagine how he would let down his guard throughout the book. I do wish that we learned more about the villain's motive in committing the crimes that he had, but I don't think the narrative suffers from the lack. Highly enjoyable, and although the brothers have all had their stories told, I hope that more will come in the series.

This one left me a bit unfilled. It starts with a bang and then gets good and then it just sort of quickly rushes to the ending parts. I liked that River was damaged, beaten down, out of luck and downtrodden. What he was doing, as a former cop, really contrasted with who he should be, who he could be but then BAM he gets a fae pick-me-up and life's pretty good. Yes yes he thinks about things and still has the my life is crap attitude -- but I wanted him to r-e-a-l-l-y have more of a transition. I haven't really been able to connect with Braelyn anyway - and that didn't help. It was just so quick and so anticlimatic....not what I expected. I still liked it - because the beginning was top notch. I just wanted a bit more wallowing in misery before the happy ending.

Quite a lot of horrible violence in here I wasn't mentally prepared for: I just wanted a cute sweet read after a long day, not a lengthy torture session. However, apart from this, an enjoyable story. I liked new character River a whole lot more than Tristan from book #2.

Better than #2, not as good as #1

I enjoyed this third installment of the Fae series. Arcadian Prince Braelan is attracted to down and out ex-cop River. Excellent characterization, great plot and hot sex, what more could you want?

I just love this series. Urban fantasy, and right up my alley, dark and gritty but with just enough 'awww' to keep me happy (which is to say, a sprinkling). I can't say it's great literature, I can't say it is a standout at any one skill in the authorial repertoire, just good in all aspects, enough that the skill is invisible and the tale takes over. Solid, capable, intelligent writing and story-telling that scratches exactly the bone that I often want (need?) scratched.

Pure, sweet, escapism. No hard thinking or heavy messages (which, I love those, but sometimes...). *lolls happily*

I wish Vaughn would write more in this vein (the m/m vein, in particular).

I enjoyed reading Unforgiven, the third story in the Fae series. Braelan started out in the series as an unlikable character but by this installment he's redeemed himself and ready for his happily ever after. River is an ex-cop who did four years in prison for a crime he didn't commit, the murder of his partner/lover. These two men have suffered both through their actions or those of others and their love story plays out well in this gritty, sometimes dark and violent story.

It was also great catching up with Cobalt, Uriskel and others from the previous books. Too bad there are no more brothers in this family.

What took me so long to read this final book in the series?!? It didn't seem as harsh as the first 2 but still a great read. Here we finally get ex-douchebag's Braelen's story. And River. God, what a depressing story he has. He's like a walking loss of hope and yet his humanity breaks through every once in a while. That, of course, was in the beginning. Once we get to know him, he's all passion and heart. The other brothers play a role in this book as well but don't take away from the MCs at all. A great ending to the trilogy.

Unforgiven is the third book in this series after Skin Deep and Heartsong. Unforgiven is Braelan’s story, one of the most complex characters of the series, someone I didn’t think I could ever like, but he surprised me.

The story opens with Braelan, the Fae prince, breaking into an ATM machine to get some money for a taxi to the Grotto, his half brother Cobalt’s tattoo parlor. He’s now on earth in New York City, his second visit to the mortal realm where most of this story takes place, having left Arcadia, the Seelie Court and home of the Fae for good (or so he thinks), even though his father the king planned to step down and he was expected to be the new ruler.

Someone was watching him as he broke into the ATM, a former gay cop named River Jarvis who had been living as a street hustler since he was released from jail after serving 4 years for killing his former partner and lover. River was desperate since he, too, had no money. He was gaunt from lack of food, his clothes were rags that hung from his body, and he had been scrabbling and barely existing using scams on defenseless and vulnerable people to get money for food and rent. That evening while he was in the midst of another unproductive scam he saw Braelan robbing an ATM and he devised a plan to get the money he had stolen. However his mark turned out to be unexpected in many ways.

This is the most complicated story of the series and Braelan changed 180 degrees from the spoiled prince in Heartsong that I met initially; he was so different he was almost unrecognizable. At the end of Heartsong he had rejected the Seelie Court when he saw how corrupt the Fae were, especially his father the king,

The main plot, involving a former as well as a new enemy was well executed, but if violence bothers you you might be well advised to stay away from Unforgiven because the last chapters, while exciting, were pretty violent. This book was very dark and the plot was complex and at times I wasn’t sure of its direction. One major flaw was that the author didn’t explain in detail the motive of one of the villains, and since the stories of the three brothers have now been told I guess we’ll never know because this is probably the last book in the series.

Many of the supporting characters were funny, including Jules the crack addicted whore who lived in Rivers’ building and would do anything to get laid. In addition to Uriskel and Cobalt, two of the characters that I liked from the previous books, Nix and Shade, were back and I really enjoyed their relationship.

The world building of New York City’s decaying and crumbling underbelly was well done and I thought that the author captured the despair, poverty and unhappiness of the people who tried to eke out an existence in that part of the city, which was emphasized by the boarded up buildings and general sense of being abandoned. Best of all was the characterization of River who I thought was very well done and overshadowed Braelan at times because he was so gritty and courageous. Braelan was also three dimensional and extremely brave, and the last scenes almost broke my heart even though I knew he was a paranormal and therefore had a higher pain threshold than humans.

If you have read the other stories Unforgiven is not to be missed.

This is not a standalone book and should be read as part of the series.

THREE & A HALF STARS--The final book of the S.W. Vaughn's "Skin Deep" series/trilogy ended with a quieter finish when compared to the earlier books in the series. This is not in anyway downplaying this book. But if I had read this book first in the series...I still would have liked it, I guess.

This book could be read as a stand alone but I think it would serve potential readers to read the books in order to better understand the history of Cobalt & Will - Skin Deep and Heartsong - Uriskel & Trystan (my fave couple). The author wrote her own version of a prince & a pauper theme.

We have returning to the final book, Braelan, the ex-villain/brat fairy prince from the first two books finally get his shot at love. I'm still on the fence with him getting his own book, but I'm not the author. Who's Braelan's love interest? Why, it's River/Rob/Jeff/Jack (he's a con artist, you see) - a tormented, homeless, suicidal, ex-cop, ex-con, con artist who actually meets the prince while the prince is robbing an ATM machine. Try saying that sentence ten times fast.

Unforgiven's Braelan was way tamer compared to Heartsong's Braelan. Heartsong's Braelan was an evil, sadistic, sensual prick that just hurt so good. In this book he's repentant and cries a bit and falls in love. I'm all for mush but I was hoping brat/prick! Braelan would have made a visit or two. But Braelan was adorable with his innocent act to the human world. I liked it. He went from Jaguar to kitten though.

Also there were some questions that lingered: (SPOILER ALERT-ish)

--What's the meaning of the name River for Rob? He said it was a nickname carried over from prison but...why?

--David MacShayne, he's a human, right? How did he learn so much about the Fae if it's supposed to be a secret? Where did his hatred stem from? Did it start with Harry? What did Harry do to him to get him worked up? Was there a history?

--Why would Braelan's father step down from the throne? He's immortal and chose such an odd time to give up his throne if his son was so wishy-washy with ascending the throne. His father is uber-selfish so why give it away after ruling with such an iron fist?

This book I think ended up being the mushiest out of the three, still had a resolute ending for the series and will appeal to series followers. This series is by far still one of the more palatable fae series I've read.

3.5* I will admit, I read this one out of order. I am not a huge Fae fan, but have read enough to understand much of the mythology used. Really the only thing I missed was the back-story for the brothers. Enough was told to let me know the Braelen was an ass in previous books.

River/Rob is a former Cop who went to prison for the death of his lover/partner Harry. 2 years after serving his time, he is now penniless and pulling con's on the street for enough money to each "Every once in a while". One year after the events of book 2, Braelen is disenchanted with the corruption and violence associated with the royal court in his home realm, for which he is heir apparent, and decides to try the mortal world again. Shortly after arriving he is caught using his magic to rob an ATM by River. River thinks Braelen is trying to hustle him, and Braelen just wants River. Of course there are those that don't want them to be together/happy but in the end the Prince and the pauper find their HEA.

So this book has been on my tbr pile for a long time, actually since I finished the last book and it has taken me so very long to read it. I liked that now we have seen the three brothers and their lives, but I feel like this is just the beginning of their adventures. I would like to read about what happens now in Arcadia.

I like this book on so many levels. There is the stranger in a strange land theme and the homeless man diamond in the rough. What I didn't love is the same thing I always dislike in this series. There is a level of violence inflicted to one or both of the main characters that is off putting for me. I just don't like violence for the sake of the day being saved by the good guy and love triumphing over evil. I mean the bad guys in these books are pretty awful already without the extra added violence.

Unforgiven

Gosh! I am sure going to miss these brothers and their mates. **sigh...💞

This is the third and final story in the brothers fae trilogy. In Unforgiven, Braeden returns to the human realm a year after leaving (the end of book 2).

His father has decided it is time he pass the crown 👑 to Braeden and wanting no part of the corrupt politics of the fairy court, he instead flees to NYC.

Through a series of events including robbing an ATM, being tazed, and meeting and experiencing the greatest sex of his life, he finds himself on the wrong side of the law, and in the clutches of a Fae terrorist.

Learning to trust and love is never easy when you aren't sure what to believe...

Breathtaking

This was one of the best fantasy series that I've ever read. Engaging characters and fascinating plots. Heaped with steamy passion and the kind of love that all romantics like me will dream about. I'm so sorry it ended at just 3 books.....or has it? I can only wish for more. Great read! Thank you.

I read the entire series back to back so same review for all. Well written, sexy characters and great HEAs for each book. I loved that each of the brothers were so different and that their lives and relationships with their human partners were unique. And I absolutely loved the ending.

There is a lot of torture in this series but there's also a lot of gentleness.

Similar in tone and content to the first two in the series

Warning: This review might contain what some people consider SPOILERS.

Rating: 7/10

PROS:
- Braelan and River are on guard with each other right from the start. It makes for an interesting journey, watching them soften toward each other as their feelings grow.
- Braelan isn’t quite as wide-eyed in this story as he was in the last, which made him a bit more endearing to me. I never felt that his naiveté was over the top in Heartsong, but I did start to roll my eyes a bit toward the end. In this volume, his confusion is tempered by some real-world knowledge.
- I love the setting of the Grotto, Cobalt’s tattoo studio. I’m glad that the books keep coming back to it--and that the characters from the earlier stories keep making brief appearances.
- Each of these stories addresses the issue of a human character discovering the truth about the Fae characters in a different way, which keeps them from seeming too similar or repetitive.

CONS:
- As is the case with the first two books in this series, you have to ignore a large coincidence in this one to be able to buy into the story. I was able to convince myself (mostly) that Fate was at work…
- River has been living on the streets for several years when they meet, doing whatever he has to in order to survive (read between the lines here), and when he and Braelan have sex, neither of them even thinks about a condom. Fool, meet Idiot.
- The story turns a little mushy toward the end.

Overall comments: The first two books in this series contain some heavy scenes that detail physical and emotional abuse, and this one doesn’t disappoint on that front either. There’s a fairly lengthy spell that I found unpleasant to read. Still, I liked it overall, and I think it’s a fitting end to the series.

Okay, this one I liked best because I didn't have to deal with quite so much blood and guts of the supposed good guys. At least when there was pain and torture it was a truly bad guy doing it.

Braelan comes back and River catches him stealing money from an ATM and they end up in this rather love/hate thing, where River steals the money, Braelan tracks him, River thinks he stole it back, River gets in trouble, Braelan saves him and then they have to work it out. I felt badly for River who has been essentially homeless except for his dick of a landlord and since getting out of jail his life sucks and then Braelan comes along and he's confused why the guy would want a bum, and has had his heart shut off for so long he's confused by his feelings. Then it seems the cops are after them, not just any cops the ones who framed River for murder.

So I enjoyed this one much more. I just kind of ignored the fact that Braelan had been a sadistic bastard in the last book and went with it. Maybe the ending was a bit too pat and perfect, but hey, HEA and all that. When does Malik get a story?

I'd actually rate this a three and a half, but decided to round up because it's quality writing. I was glad to see more of Braelan, but was slightly disappointed in River. His back story was at least as intriguing as Will's and Trystan's were, but I wanted more details, at least at the end of the book. He also wasn't as deep or interesting a character as the two previous love interests were. The over all plot of the book was interesting, but the author missed a chance at fleshing it out into something great, especially in the (disappointingly short) epilogue.

The first book is still my favorite, but I liked this one better than the second. For some reason I feel like Cobalt's personality has changed throughout the series, maybe he's gotten nicer? Not sure, but it's strange.

Anyway, about the actual plot. Just kinda felt incomplete a little bit, and I was hoping that Nix would end up playing a bigger part. Braelan and River were good together so no complaints there!

Definitely an improvement over the second book, but still not as good as the first in the series. I had to knock off a star for that horribly sweet - and simple - epilogue. Don't get me wrong, I like a happy ending, but I'm just skeptical that one would be possible given the previous setup. Plus, I expected better from SW!

It was good to round out the series with this final book and have a chance to see Braelan redeem himself. I felt really bad for River. He really got a raw deal and paid a heavy price for something he didn’t do. I think the first couple books had a little more edge to them, but I still enjoyed this one.

Love reformed Braelan, loved broken down River. They were great together. I'm not sure how I feel about how everything was tied together with who the bad guys were (pretty obvious) and the connection to River's past. Can't decide if it worked for me or not. Loved seeing Cobalt/Will, and Uriskel/Trystan again. Pretty bummed I've reached the end of this series, I've really enjoyed it.

It started ok, lots of promise with one human bad boy and a guilty Fae. But then the River just became boring and such a softy that it kinda lost me. The end was excruciating sweet and squishy, it almost made me puke.
Why do all MM books have a hot half naked guy on the cover? And
