Scarlet Hyacinth was born in 1986, in a Romania still struggling under the weight of the communist regime. As a young girl, she started studying the English language and fell in love with books. After a childhood spent devouring hundreds of pages of fantasy literature, Scarlet found her calling. While at uni, she discovered with the help of a dear friend that she had a knack for writing. The rest, as they say, is history, or rather, lots of hard work and sleepless nights. Today, she can only say with a smile that nothing is impossible and that no matter what others say, you can achieve your dreams if you work hard enough.
‘Three Mates, One Destiny’, the fourth book in this series, represents a real turning point in the development of the overall plot. I really liked the mix of revelations as to what is going on with this feral-making virus and the personal side of seeing another mated threesome come together. Since it was Paulie, from the very first book, who is now all grown up, this also provides a nice piece of continuity. In my mind, that adds a special touch to a longer series like this and makes it feel more like one epic story than several individual books.
Paulie, the human in this relationship, doesn’t come with the usual “oh my God, what have I gotten myself into” situation that most humans face when discovering they are mated to shifters. He’s been around his father and his two mates for seven years. Interestingly, that does not make Marcus and Sebastian’s appearance and the subsequent discovery he is their third mate any less problematic. Paulie believes in committed relationships and has a hard time accepting the couple even need him.
Marcus and Sebastian have been together, more or less secretly, for a hundred years before they run into Paulie. For them, the problem isn’t the fact that there is suddenly a third partner or the fear of how he will fit in. Their key focus is how to make this easier for Paulie. That says a lot about who they are, and they grew on me very quickly.
If you like shifter stories that revolve as much around external enemies and bad guys as about a somewhat problematic three-way relationship, you will probably like this book.
This might be my favorite one of the series yet! I guess that is why there was a 7 year jump ahead, so Paulie would be old enough to have his own story. I really loved how caring Sebastian and Marcus were about taking their time with him, and I really liked seeing so many previous characters come back. This book also sets things up for the next one very nicely, can't wait for that!
2.5 After a long, long time, I found that the saga had had a 4th and 5th book, so he aquí mi reseña.
Nothing is worse than feeling like a third wheel. Sebastian and Marcus seem to have so much love for one another especially after being together for so many years. Poor Paulie cannot imagine having a place within the relationship. I could not imagine being destined to be with two partners whom have already been such a constant in each other’s lives. I related to Paulie’s apprehensiveness since I, too, would feel the same way.
The secondary characters are very likable, but can be a bit overwhelming. I did not have the pleasure of reading the previous stories in this series, which left me at a disadvantage because there are so many characters that I felt disconnected to. With that said, I can see how readers of the previous stories would love these characters and would want more of them.
This story had a very dynamic plot, which made it extremely entertaining. Not only were the main characaters trying to sort out their relationship, but they also had to deal with rogue werewolves and intolerant families. Again, since I did not read previous stories within this story I felt a little disconnected from some aspects of the sub-plots. One plot I felt completely emotionally involved in was Sebastian’s personal issues. Poor Sebastian only seemed to have his parents and Marcus in his corner. Because of his half-blood heritage, he is viewed as a misfit among his kind. While this made the story complex it is a common situation so it made the emotional connection with the characters particularly Sebastian more in depth.
This story was definitely action packed which made the time fly when reading. There was never a dull moment and for that, I would recommend this story to anyone who loves a good, sexy shifter now and then.
My favorite of the series so far. I liked seeing Paulie's interaction with his Dad and his dedication to the research for the feral virus. I also appreciated his reluctance to jump into his mating with Marcus and Sebastian without thinking of the consequences. It was also nice seeing how patient Marcus and Sebastian was with Paulie, giving him the time he needed to realize his heart was involved, not just his hormone.
The integration of the previously met secondary characters was a nice touch, giving the story a sense of continuity. We also get that from the research story line. The action scenes are well plotted and scattered throughout, the ones at the end setting up the next book nicely. I look forward the Star Crossed Mates.
So I've read thru some of the other reviews and several I agree with. I liked the fact that Marcus and Sebastian don't try to rush Paulie into their mating and the fact that even thou Paulie's been around a threesome for 7 yrs from his dad's mating that he questions where he'd fit in. Plus the fact that there's not that whole having to explain spirit wolves to him.
I also agreed with the fact that near the end the action did seem a bit fantastical for the series. This book in the series is also more heavy into the 'romance' than sex. There really is barely there sex but in spite of that in comparison to the previous books it was a good read for me
typical Scarlet Hyacinth serial romance. nothing fantastic, nothing so bad it can't be finished. what is typical Scarlet Hyacinth? imagine a shorter harlequin romance but with no t&a (see, i was going to write no surprise pregnancies, but... yeah.).
out of sheer laziness, i will be using this as my template for all serials by UNLESS motivated otherwise by markedly good/bad writing: Scarlet Hyacinth joyee flynn sunny day lynn hagen stormy glenn carol lynne gabrielle evans
i'd apologize for said halfassedness, but i'm not sorry.
more plot then the rest of the series in some areas - however the action and plot twists at the end were a bit fantastical for me and I was left thinking ...really???
