Primarily divided into colonial-era traditional American fare and immigrant-boom fare by origin, this book contains a wide variety of “American” recipes for all occasions. The best part of this book however is the historical context that precedes each recipe. A great little read if you love culinary history.
Contains a recipe I’ve been looking for and several others that peeked my interest, what I like about anything that carries the Farm Journal cooks is that you pretty much know they are tried and true recipes, cooked for generations from several nationalities to feed families, recipes meant to be shared and several I see still being made today. If you love food history and an old recipe made in its original form and not some mashed up version it’s worth a look.
I saw this book on the shelves of a relative and had to have it. It was easy to find a used copy. It is a vintage cookbook that is based on heritage cooking. It is organized by cuisine and there is an informative paragraph before every recipe about the foundational history of that recipe. I enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed the recipes! I highly recommend this book!
