A retired, small-time arsonist is haunted by the deadly consequences of his actions and tries to escape his former life, but the simple world he's found is disrupted by those who want to silence him, those who want to punish him, and others who want to hire him. Burnt is another thriller from the author of The Eno Club and the short-story collection Vanessa .
I had dinner burning on the stove and I did not care. I had messages I needed to reply to and I did not care. I had somewhere to be and I did not go. Burnt does that to you. It pulls you in with quiet precise writing and then somewhere around the halfway point it has you completely and there is nothing to do but surrender to it.
What separates Burnt from every other crime novel I have read recently is Jeff's code. He never hurts anyone. He never burns anything with a living creature inside. He has rules and he follows them with a professional pride that is somehow both admirable and heartbreaking. And then one night the rules are not enough. That is when this book becomes something truly special.
My friend Caroline Miller told me about this book and after reading the description and a few pages, I can already tell this is a brilliant thriller. The premise alone a retired arsonist haunted by his past is so gripping. Can't wait to finish it. Highly recommend checking it out!"
