Rate this book
This is the fourth book in the Henry Wright Mystery Series. Henry Wright is a retired Chief of Police from tiny Eagle Lake, Wisconsin. He retired several months after his beloved wife's unexpected death and moved to California. He settled in Palm Springs at the request of his old friend Wayne Johnson, who is a captain in the Palm Springs police department. Henry spends a lot of his time at his computer helping the FBI profile victims of violent crimes. Wayne, and some of his other law enforcement colleagues request his assistance solving the most difficult times. Henry lives with his roommate, retired high school teacher Charles Knightly III. (Please don't call him Chuck.)

This time, Henry is visiting his friend, Gloria McCann in Sonora, when the owner of a local theatre is brutally murdered during the performance of a play that they are attending.

Once again, Tuolumne County Sheriff Bill Rustow asks Henry for assistance as he and Gloria team up to find out which of the cast and crew who wanted to see this scoundrel dead actually did the deed.

#4 in Henry Wright Mysteries.

First the good: I got to hand it to the author for having a variety of cases in the series that Henry has solved. Unfortunately this book is the same as the last one in that there's more of an emphasis on the love story part of the plot than the mystery and that's a very big disappointment for me. I feel like this whole series has change so much from the beginning and that's not always bad but it's not always good.

A couple months ago I read the fifth book in the series and I rated it three stars but going back and reading these first four books in the series starting last night and into today, I'm kind of wondering why I had it three stars because these stories are OK but they are not as strong as the first book. I feel like it's no longer so much about the mysteries as it is the love story. Because I have read all the stories so far, and maybe even because I read them all together right now, I can see the proress of the character, and I don't like him as much as I liked him in the first book. If I were just starting the story here, I would no doubt enjoy it a lot more but since I've seen the changes in this character from before until now, I'm not enjoying the character as much as I used to. Also, Henry has gotten this: "I'm better than everyone else in solving mysteries," mentality about him that I don't think he even realizes he has. This is rather unfortunate. This series had a lot of appeal for me. Not so much anymore.

Two stars.

This is one of the better books of the series for me, but they have all been good and they are going to be re-read with pleasure.

These books are just very comfortable, well written cozy type mysteries with individual characters that are believable. The author seems to know the settings well and be adept at putting together a very entertaining plot.

I read this series of mysteries set in the Palm Springs area just because my daughter and her family live there. They aren't best sellers, but are a good read and since I know so much of the settings I liked them.
