Maggie's Book was written to record details of island life on a small island in Orkney, only about 5 miles by one mile in size. We'd visited for one evening in 2015, and one day in 2016, but this year we spent a week therem at the invitation of the host and Ukrainian guest of one of the residents. I'd been instrumental in bringing most of the Ukrainian refugees to Orkney, and this mother works online, and had a young son she wanted safe in a small school. They have settled and become a valued part of the community.
The sense of community is evident in this slim book of Maggie Harcus' collected memories, written down before they would be lost to the community. Being elderly the scraps of information that were gleaned for this volume are rather disjointed, and the last section of names and references to the residents she remembers from her earlier life are probably of great interest to someone researching their family heritage, but not a lot of interest for a visitor like me, with no family connection to the island.
