It's a tome and a good reference for Spurgeon's life. The layout meant that there was a fair bit of repetition, and the analysis felt a bit uneven at times. There were missing citations in some places which made chasing down the original sources difficult. Drummond relied heavily on Spurgeon's "autobiography" and less so on his published sermons and Metropolitan Tabernacle periodical (The Sword & The Trowel) which seems curious. Nonetheless, an impressive amount of work and a fair place to start.
Very good and detailed, but extremely long. So heavy I used it to press boards together while wood glue dried. Not a problem because it is so comprehensive. I use it more as a reference if I'm looking up something about Surgeon's life than I do as a feasible biography
What a masterful telling of a man who utterly spent himself in serving the Lord! Spurgeon is a great example for us to follow. He had such a love for the Lord and His church. May we be found the same with what God has called us to do.
I found this biography interesting and at times helpful. It deals with Spurgeon's life comprehensively and can drag at times. Overall, I enjoyed the read.
I enjoyed this lengthy biography of Charles Spurgeon. The book covers the life of Spurgeon and outlines his life by using Spurgeon's favorite book (a book he read each year until his death), Pilgrim's Progress. I enjoyed how the book focused on many aspects of Spurgeon's life from his early childhood to his conversion to Christ to his struggles as a pastor. Today, Spurgeon is remembered as the "prince of preachers" but in his day, he was often attacked for his simplicity in his preaching and his doctrine. Spurgeon stood firm for the glory of God and his life today is celebrated by Christians as a true slave of Christ.
I do recommend this book. You will enjoy it and learn much about Charles Haddon Spurgeon.
During an earlier season of depression when I struggled to read the Bible & feast on the meat of Scripture, this 800+ page biography was my food & brought encouragement to my weary soul. I love Charles Spurgeon & thank God for the man.
