Afton Fraser, a classic film aficionado, is constantly asked for her suggestions on which movies to see, which inspired her to create this lively guide. HOLLYWOOD PICKS THE CLASSICS focuses on the movies of the Golden Age - 1930 to 1960 - breaks down the movies into categories such as Film Noir and Romance, and gives the must-sees in each category. Also included is a 'yearbook' of the stars and directors from the movies described, and their top movies. More than just the traditional video guide, what makes it truly unique is the inclusion of dozens of 'top ten favourite' lists from Hollywood stars, directors, and writers - it's like having Michael Caine standing with you in the rental store telling you what you should see. An introduction by screen legend Esther Williams tells what it means to have worked in Hollywood during that time.
If you have to settle on the best classic films, this is a pretty good selection. Of course, there were many that were left out but overall, I think they did a good job. I've watched almost all of the films mentioned in here (except for the Westerns and Sci-Fi thrillers, though I may now seek out the ones mentioned in here at least) and I loved learning some new tidbit about the films and actors and actresses in them.
A fantastic variety of classic movies showcased ensuring there’s something for every movie lovers taste.
Each chapter is broken down by movie genre and not only do you get a synopsis of the movie, but also trivia about the cast and crew and highlights of awards nominated and won.
I do wish that there had been more horror movies featured, but overall this is a keeper!
A cheerful and amusing guide to some of the very best films to ever come out of Hollywood. I'm sure there are people who would disagree or complain that their favorites were left out, but this is a good collection of prime choices. You can't go far wrong enjoying these films - or this book about them.
A good book to discover the classics you've missed and revist some old favorites. One interesting feature is the margins contain "favorites" lists from well-known people in the industry.
