My Review…..
Huge thanks to Paul Durston for sending me a copy of If I Were Me to review.
Well I was pretty much gripped from the opening pages of If I Were You, we meet PC Charlie Quinlan arriving at a horrific road traffic incident, involving a fuel tanker, when she arrives on the scene Charlie rescues a young boy, getting herself burnt in the process.
During Charlie’s recovery on sick leave, she starts to have some severe memory loss issues, thinking that they may be down to the stress of the incident and not wanting to let on to her colleagues or counsellor, she tries to ignore them. However things start getting very weird, and the next thing she knows, she’s being questioned about a murder, arrested and suspended from duty!
If I Were Me is a complex and brilliant novel, it took me until about halfway through to workout what was going on with Charlie, but when that is revealed you will love Charlie even more! She is a superb character, a feisty, intelligent, smart, woman with a hidden core that we gradually find out about, during the story.
Fast paced and extremely well written, with an absolute cracking telling of what being a police officer is rally like, this is a pretty unique novel, and one I’ve not really encountered before. Involving mental health and recovery and focusing on how trauma can be the trigger to so many buried memories, and I have to say well done to Paul Durston because this part of the book is obviously well researched and so well written.
I rushed throug If I Were Me in a couple of days and couldn’t put it down, and in fact the story and plot are so all encompassing that I still can’t get it out of my mind! I dearly hope that there will be a second book and that this is the start of a new series!
If you like gritty and hard hittting police thrillers this will be the book for you. A certified 5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ read! 👏👏
