Hamilton Sisters #1

Un beso perverso

Rate this book

Kaitlin has always loved books and loved to read.

As a young girl growing up on the New Jersey shore (yes, she is a Jersey Girl!) she spent hours and hours reading at the beach, out on the front porch, and in her bedroom very late at night when she was supposed to be sleeping. She would walk to the little public library in town and choose books as if they were delicious treats in a candy store. She read all the classic “girl” books: Little Women, as well as every other book written by Louisa May Alcott, the entire Anne of Green Gables series, and The Secret Garden, by Frances Hodgson Burnett. All of these stories took place in another time period, so different from her own life and that was very appealing.

Kaitlin fell in love with historical romances when she was fourteen years old and first read Mistress of Mellyn, by Victoria Holt. Even before she devoured every single one of her books, Kaitlin was hooked on historical romance fiction. She then moved on to the likes of the novels by Kathleen Woodiwiss (Shanna and The Flame and the Flower) which she read stealthily, when her older sisters were not home to see that she was reading their books. However, her all time favorite book was, and still is, Margaret Mitchell’s Gone With the Wind. Now she adores the works of Lisa Kleypas, Julia Quinn, and Phillipa Gregory.

Her love of reading translated naturally to a love of writing. She has written personal journals since she was fourteen and has adored every creative writing class she took in school. She actually wrote her first romances when she was fifteen, with her best friend. Sadly, they had no clue what they were writing about in those spiral notebooks, having no romantic experiences to draw from at that point! Most of those early efforts were tossed in a fireplace, but one notebook still survives to haunt her.

In college Kaitlin took a detour from writing and became a foreign language major, spending her junior year in Spain. And because stories of the past always intrigued her, she also studied history.

Kaitlin now lives in sunny Southern California with her family, where she is busy writing her next novel!

Q&A with Kaitlin O’Riley

On Writing:

How do you come up with the ideas for your books?

This is probably the question most frequently asked of me, and probably asked of most writers. I’m sure each author has her own methods of inspiration. As for myself, my ideas come to me in different ways. Sometimes I just close my eyes and imagine. Other times ideas come to me while listening to music. I often get inspiration from conversations with my family and friends. A lot of my writing, especially the dialogue, happens naturally, while I’m writing at the computer. The characters I’ve created will just start talking.

Why do you write historical romance?

Because I love the genre and always have. I’m also a bit of a history buff. Past eras fascinate me--the elegant clothing, the styles, the mannerisms, the confining societal elements. The past always seems more romantic and it has already happened it’s easy to idealize it. (Even when I look back to the 1980’s!) Sometimes I think I was born in the wrong century, but then again I couldn’t do without some of the modern comforts, like air conditioning and electricity.

Are your characters based on people you know in real life?

Now that’s a tricky question and one that could get me in trouble. I suppose most of the characters are combinations of everyone I know or have ever known. I don’t think I have ever intentionally based one particular character on one particular person. (And if I did, I’m not telling who it was!) However, I do use names of family members and friends for characters and even add the names of local places from my hometown in my books, for the amusement of those who know me.

Which is your favorite of the books you have written?

They are all my favorites in different ways. But I must say I enjoyed

After reading and enjoying O'Riley's "One Sinful Night," I was disappointed by this mediocre story.

When His Kiss Is Wicked is a historical set in the Victorian period and tells the romance between a feisty bookshop keeper and a marriage-minded heir to a marquisate. Colette Hamilton has taken over managing the family's bookshop after her father's death six months before the book opens. Her Uncle Randall would much prefer she and her sister marry money and abandon the bookshop as he resents that the family is involved in trade. Lucien Sinclair, the Earl of Waverly, meets Colette when he visits the bookshop to find reading material for his invalid father. Sparks fly between the feisty proto-feminist and the traditionalist aristocrat and the attraction grows as they run into each other at Society events. Lucien, however, is determined to marry a boring, biddable wife, no matter how much Colette appeals to him.

One of the first flaws to smack me in the face is that O'Reilly absolutely MANGLES the English peerage. She gives an illegitimate son a courtesy title - Lord Jeffery Eddington - and then mangles it further by referring to him as Lord Eddington. There were many other examples, but as Eddington was a major secondary character, this was the most glaring. The lack of basic research made immersing myself in the story rather difficult.

In addition, she uses modern language and ideas in what is supposed to be a historical. I can buy that a woman could run a bookshop, but not that she wouldn't sell the business after marriage or that she would expect people to find her behavior totally acceptable. I was rather bruised from being beaten over the head with the feminist overtones. I know it's tempting to put modern ideas in play, but Colette was a walking anachronism.

Characterization was poor as well. O'Reilly made the mistake of telling, rather than showing. We're told Eddington is quite charming, but she wrote little dialog that let the reader see him as such. I saw very little of people's inner workings via POV musings. Characters felt flat and one-dimensional.

The plot did a poor job of making me wait. I freely admit that I am a poor plot prognosticator. You show me a mystery, and I'll show you a shocked face every time the culprit is revealed. Yet, I guessed every plot twist before it happened. If you can't fool me, ay yi yi.

As a result of the flat characterization and total lack of tension, I was completely bored by this book, nearly abandoning it at page 100. Highly disappointing, considering how much I enjoyed her earlier book. I hope this was merely a speed bump in her career, as she's clearly capable of better work.

I would probably say 3 1/2. The reasons for their not being together were a bit weak. But it was the first in a new series for the author. I think that firsts always suffer. We got a lot of background on the other 4 sisters that will be written about. I will look for the next one because the two characters were definitely interesting in the first one!

After falling in love with this Hamilton family in the Hamilton Cousins series (which deals with some of the grown children of these Hamilton Sisters), I just had to go back and get these ones! The sisters were charming and very likable as aunts/mothers in the cousins' books, as were their husbands, so I just had to 'go back in time' and get the details of their stories, fully meet these characters in their own right as opposed to just seeing them as side characters, as well as find out the history of their storied bookshop! I love the idea of owning and running a bookshop, so that was another draw right there.

So this first book is about Colette, the eldest of the five sisters. She runs the bookshop, and it is her baby, her precious, her life. She lives for it, and adores her days there, especially now that she is able to make changes and improvements after the passing of her father left her basically in charge. Her mother dislikes the shop, and wants nothing to do with it, so Colette happily takes charge, with the help of her younger sisters. Unfortunately, money for the family is beyond tight, and this prompts her uncle to decide it's high time to marry off Colette, and the next eldest sister, Juliette in order to save his coffers. Uncle Randall also hates the bookshop, and how his brother, the girls' father, smudged the family name by doing such a 'disgraceful' thing as owning and running a shop, and he's also lil salty about being left with six females, one flighty, melodramatic widow, and five young girls, that he is now responsible for. So he's itching to get rid of the shop, and the girls, and pocket a nice chunk of 'restitution'/payback money while doing so.

Too bad for him that these sisters are no meek missies. His plans to drag them out for a Season, quickly marry them off to the highest, most beneficial-to-him bidder, and wash his hands of his responsibilities, do not go smoothly, at all. Colette tries to be mostly cooperative, but Juliette is not so inclined, that's for sure, which of course, does not best please their uncle and aunt.

Colette, and our MMC, Lucien, first meet in the bookshop when he comes in to make a purchase. Sparks fly, and the connection has been made. They meet again at a society event, and the sisters also meet another important character, Jeffery Eddington. The girls quickly become fast friends with Jeffery, and I know from the cousins series I read previously that he becomes an MMC himself in a future book in this series, and he was a great guy when I met him as an uncle of the girls in the other series, so I loved seeing how it all began, how he became an honorary Hamilton family member long before marrying into the family. Looking forward to getting to his book, which, of course, is the final one in this series, so I have to wait, lol. I don't mind though, because I know we'll see more of him throughout the series, so by the time I get to his book, I should know him very well! And on the way, I'll probably somehow end up liking him way more than I already do! He's a great character, fun and charming, and a bit mischievous, but always willing to help in any way he can, and a truly great, and caring listener, offering a shoulder to cry on, or someone to vent to, or a willing ear to scheme with.

I suppose enough focus on him though, and back to the main characters! Obviously, I loved Colette. A girl after my own heart with her bookshop, and her always being the responsible, strong sibling. As the oldest, I too was always a bit of a 'mother hen' with my brothers and cousins when I had to be, trying to keep us out of trouble, and cleaning up any messes, so I could totes feel for her position of not just trying to make the shop a successful business, but also having to worry about, and take care of her sisters and mother. Just a girl who wants to be surrounded by books, and share her love and knowledge of books, and hang out with other book people, and maybe, hopefully make enough money to survive with the books. Like, girl, I so feel ya!

Lucien, he took a lil bit longer to fall for. At first, he was a bit haughty, a bit like... snobby, lol. He definitely didn't approve of Colette running the shop instead of a man, and he didn't quite gel with her and her sisters' independent-mindedness either! It took him a good while, and lots of exposure to Colette, and her family, to see the light. Once he did though, that boy was lost! Caught by the love-bug like a butterfly in a net. But... in typical HR hardheaded MMC fashion, it takes him until practically the end of the book, after a terribly mismatched courtship with a girl who was what he thought he wanted as a wife, but was not actually at all, and a lil bit of a stirring-the-pot type scheming by Juliette and Jeffery, before he saw the light and realised his own true feelings. Typical xD

All in all, I loved these characters! All the sisters, Lucien, Jeffery, and even Lucien's parents! There was a lil side bit to the story about them, as Lucien's mother, Lenora, had left him as a child and 'disappeared', which of course is what gave him his issues with the idea of marriage and the risks of love. Well, suffice to say, everything is all good in the end, and I enjoyed finding out the truth behind it all. She was quite likable and easy to empathize with, as was Lucien's father, Simon. I especially loved the easy affection that quickly developed between Colette and Simon, and the sweetness of her visiting him, reading to him, and being a big help in encouraging and helping him gain back a semblance of normal life after suffering medical issues.

I quite enjoyed this book all the way through, and I'm definitely happy that I already have Juliette's book right here on deck to jump into next! I can't wait to get the deets on her and Cap'n Fleming's story, after getting plenty of enticing hints in their daughter Sara's book that I already read. It sounds like it's right up my alley too! Jumping on a ship and running away to have an adventure! Hell yea, I'm down for that too ;)

3.5/5

I love me a cheesy romance. And this was a very satisfying read but there were just something's that made it so I could not give this book five stars.
For one I enjoy stories about pretty girls as much as the next girl but when the woman is so unimaginably beautiful that every man flips out I just don't enjoy it as much. I like the romance with the wallflower (probably because I relate to them better). I did however really enjoy Colette's personality. Her determination and with was really nice to be paired with jaw dropping good looks.
I also liked how Lucian's opinion of women working changed. I don't often read books where the protagonist is so set in his ideas as Lucian was.
All in all I thought it was a really nice read. It sucked me in and held on until the end. So much so that I will devour the rest of the series and the new cousins series.
I have certainly read better written books but when a book gets me squealing it's good in my book.

I adore the Colette and her sisters! Also Jeffrey! Though it was still ambiguous whether he actually attracted to Colette or not. I am also slightly annoyed at Lucien's way of thinking that Faith should be grateful that he would offer for her, with her being a plain wallflower. But I also understand where he came of, so I don't quite know how to think of him.

I actually like Faith and her family. Even though she was shy, she knew what she wanted and didn't want to settle less than that. And her family, especially her father, was also didn't want to force her to marry. He let Faith choose her husband herself, and I really like that. I think I would like to read her story later on.

Also rather annoyed with Colette's mother, but also slightly understand her reasoning. Need to see through her POV for a more thorough understanding. And that's all my ranting. All in all, I enjoyed it very very much! Cannot wait to read Juliette's story!

This book is the first in the Hamilton Sisters series dealing with 5 sisters who run a book shop in Victorian London (set in the 1870s). This first novel is about the eldest sister Colette who is let to run the bookshop after the death of their father, as well as being responsible for the care and welfare of her sisters due to her mother Genevieve’s ill health real or imagined. She receives minimal help from her sisters with the exception of Paulette (To Tempt An Irish Rogue) but the income from the bookshop is the only income that the family have. So far so good, with the idea of women running a business successfully, but the book quickly becomes pedestrian and predictable. Kaitlin O’Riley has Genevieve drop into French often enough to become irritating. She is certainly one of the most irritating character in the series, the other one being Juliette. In addition, as the illegitimate son of a duke Jeffrey Eddington, would not have any title. Nor can his father bestow one on him, this is the privilege of the monarch (Victoria).

It started interesting and then was a bit slow and then got more interesting again. Normally I don't enjoy books with so many characters but the author did a good job making the sisters for the most part different (Lisette and Yvette seemed interchangeable to me but the others definitely had their own personalities). I'd give it 3 1/2 stars.

Eddington was a very interesting character so I'm intrigued to read his story, although strangely it's with the sister we saw the least of in this book. There could be some development along the way in the other books but frankly, while I liked Juliette's character, the story of her stowing away on a ship doesn't interest me at all.

Will your past ruin your future

Collette is an independent oldest daughter with the weight of all her sisters and frail mother in her shoulders! Lucien has had a disaster with love in the past and can't keep his hands off Collette but still doesn't want to marry her but her 4 sisters get involved for that HEA!

I liked this book more than the other reviewers because I liked the characters and their family relationships. But yes, the titles were mangled, and the ages of the characters seemed off - the “earl” was too to have such a reputation. I did not like the mother, Genevieve, one bit.

Kaitlin O’Riley has created a new series in which her characters, (five sisters!) are bound by the family business and what better business for an author’s characters to be bound to than a bookstore! Book one in her Hamilton Sisters series When His Kiss is Wicked is sure to please!
Hamilton’s Book Shoppe found in the Mayfair district of London owned by Thomas Hamilton whose love for books was the utmost focus in his life above, even, the love of his beautiful French wife and his five daughters. Collette Hamilton, the eldest of the five Hamilton sisters also loved the book shoppe just as much as her father did and as such, spent her childhood years working there training to one-day run it herself. Collette had constantly presented ideas of improvement to her father, which while he listened earnestly, chose to take none of them into consideration. However, at the passing of her father six months ago, Collette is now in control of the shoppe and the changes she feels will make it even more of a success. First on her list of changes is a full on reorganization, which includes an all out cleaning! In the midst of doing just that a chance encounter with Lucien Sinclair the Earl of Waverly, who was once an occasional customer in previous years will further set the fiery Collette forward on her mission to prove a woman can run a business without the influence (and oversight), of a man! Collette’s response to the incredulous remarks made by the lofty Lord that such a thing could not be possible (or taken seriously for that matter) takes Lucien aback as she replies, “You are aware that a woman is running our country, are you not?” Knowing that the beautiful young woman before him could not possibly contain the level of confidence she seems to exude (and the superior attitude to match), Lucien decides to put her to the test however, in doing so fears he may have awakened something within himself not found in any book! A story filled with characters that will capture your attention from their initial introduction, teamed with the glimpses of their past which Kaitlin provides along with the high-spirited banter will keep you constantly turning the pages! The Hamilton Sisters series is a regency romance that you will most certainly want to continue reading!

The backdrop of this romance was Julian's desire to marry someone that would be meek and accommodating not someone that enthralled his passions and could possibly break his heart. Once the story got moving and the relationship between Collete and Julian started in earnest- it just didn't seem quite right-his denying his feelings for Collete because of his idea of what would be best for him. Still, the Hamilton family is made up of some great characters and I look forward to reading the next Hamilton story.

After overcoming a rather wordy/rocky start, the rest of the book was fun, fluffy, and enjoyable. Although, I round parts anachronistic, I suppose most heroines have to have modern elements in order for us to enjoy them.

I can't wait to find out what happens with the rest of the Hamilton girls and who Jeffrey Eddington ends up with. I predict one of the youngest sisters (perhaps Yvette).

the story had a lot of potential but just didn't quite live up to it. the writing was solid and good, liked the characters, the plot and obstacles were just a bit weak. would probably recommend the author, not necessarily this particular story.
